I was forwarded these lovely pictures and writeup by Subhash Karmarkar of the Fiat Club about Bharat Ratna Pandit Bhimsen Joshi.

Quote:
The doyen of Indian Classical Music, his contribution to the field of music has been simply unparallel...!

Bhimsen ji has shared passion in life for two things.... 1. Music and 2. Automobiles

Not just as an enthusiast, Bhimsen ji has been an avid hands-on knowledgable auto owner too.

His knowledge about the technicalities of the car has been appreciated by the experts in auto care fraternity alike.

As also has been his avid stamina in driving the vehicle by himself...

For concerts that he used to attend all over India , many a times he used to drive the car himself non-stop : reach the venue on time and just with a refreshing moment : perform in the mehfils for next 3-4 hours...!

With best regards,

Subhash

I remember Pandit Bhimsen Joshi from the "Mile Sur Mera Tumhara" days. I was in Law college and a friend of ours revealed that Panditji always stayed at her place when in Bombay. He ws her father's friend. I remember going to meet him in Matunga in Sneh Sadan building and could not but help noticing an off white, Poona plate 67 Mercedes 220S Heckflosse parked below her house. I was told it was his car. That car unfortunately had a diesel engine and a 220D badge on its rear. It also had fur on its dash board, a common kink with Merc owners of the era. Needless to say it was in spanking condition.

I believe he still does, and is very particular and hands on with it, having travelled extensively in the car over the years.

These pictures were taken at this year's Sawai Gandharva festival. For those who are interested, here is a very crude translation of the write up. Apologies for any goof ups

"Panditji, with mastery over his voice as well as the steering wheel, is an accompalished traveller. His love for cars is an unknown aspect of his personality. He has very detailed knowledge of the workings of his car. He can also take care of & repair his car.Panditji bought this mercedes 200 (popularised by the movies) in 1967.
He has driven thousands of kilometers in this car. On many occassions he drove from Pune to Calcutta non-stop and proceeded to give a performance."
The last line is a bit of propoganda by a dealer, so I have omitted it.

Cheers

Aditya

Hi guys,
Is a decent Diesel Merc available as a daily drive car? I am open to all models from 1960s till the 1990s. Even petrol models would do if the car is in pristine shape.

I am looking only for ORIGINAL diesel / petrol models. In a list of preferrence, it would be: A) 1983-86 240D / 300D
B) 1965-78 200D
C) 1985-88 280 / 500 SEL
D) 1989-92 190D / 190E
E) 1994-98 E 220 / E250D (if they are sensibly priced)

I think you should put it up on the Mercedes Benz Club thread, i know a lot of the members have now become relatively active on Team BHP, someone will respond. Cars come up for sale in the club frequently.

Whats your budget? You interested in Auto or only Manual. All depends on what you want to spend and how.

This is unbelievable! How can the same car have two different regn. nos.? This pic was clicked by me at Udaipur about three years back. This is one of the many cars in Shriji Arvind Singhji Mewar's collection at Udaipur. The car is garaged at the same place as visible in the pic posted by Cyrus. And I think it IS the same car, or how else could this unusual color scheme be identical on the same model?

Confusing!

Vikas
