Aw shoot and all this time I thought my SLK was a Super Light Kompressor.

Now its turned out to be a Sport or Super Licht Kurt. I m gonna have to get rid of it this every evening.

aditya

I am in need of a refresher course in German spelling, many thanks to predatorwheelz for coming up with the correct spellings. Mercedes are known for making the most over enginered cars but there is another record they hold, and that is having the most confusing chronology. One thinks that he know everything about these cars until someone else comes along, adds to your knowledge, and this has just gone on and on.

harit,

No I did not mean W 108, I actually meant W 180. Of course there was the fintail range of 220/220 S /220 SE and the flagship 300 SE which were the W 111's. The W 111 was the sucessor to the W 180 and W 128 and had the 220/220 S chronology.

I have no written proof or article saying in so many words that S means Special, but all the members who have commented on the issue, you would agree that most have put forward logically that S stood for Special. Lets hope someone can back it up with something in writing or an article. I am without any printed reference material or books so will look up when back home.

Take care.
Well, German and spellings. The L stands for LEICHT, light in weight and not LICHT, light from the lamp.

MB also confused us in the order of the W numbers. For example, 128 came before 110, 111, even 108 & 109 came after 110 & 111. We say that Germans are very systematic, here somehow they jumbled them up to confuse us and give us fodder for discussion.

About the 'S' class, I have been talking to collectors over here, none have a real answer. And one of them runs a Museum dedicated to Benz. Till then we speculate and give opinions of what could be, but not definite.

Cheers harit

This topic on the 'S' class Mercedes has fuelled the urge to find out more. In the site prewarcar.com on the link below there is a 1953 Merc 300 S Roadster for sale. SUpposed to be very rare. Since this is an ad by a dealer, it does not mean that this is absolutely correct. But worth looking into. And what a desireable car. Forget the 220, this is it!

Pranlal Bhogilal, if I remember correctly, has three Mercedes 300's, two convertibles and a sedan. But are any of them 2-door roadsters? I doubt. Maybe Karl can comment after checking his archive and answering my mail!

Cheers harit

There is a picture of a 300 Sc Roadster in Wiki, taken at a rally in Mumbai. It is redish in colour and definetly a 300Sc. The picture says 1953, but I think it seems to be a slightly later model.

I did not post the picture as am not sure if this is allowed, but you can look up Mercedes 300 Sc in Wiki and it is one of the two photographs.

Take care

I used to have one of those. Still remember the number MRF 2914. Was in really good shape too. My dad sold her for a pittance because no one was using her - and i was too young to drive . Never saw her again after that.

I'll take the liberty of answering that. Its a public forum, so please go ahead and post any car as long as you think its appropriate for this thread. There are always mods in case the "public" feels your post to be inappropriate.

BTW, I'm sure a 1981 Merc does qualify as a classic. Eager to see her pics.

Thanks. This is a 1981 Merc Estate 240 TD Diesel (123) with Auto transmission, alloy wheels, original paint, upholstery, has clocked more than 2.50 lac kms till date and is running better than E220 owned by us, its been driven by my father everyday as his means of transport and plying between Jodhpur and Jaipur (some 340 odd Kms) at least ones a month to meet his grand children.
I have not seen Merc of this style on the thread, are their more of this type???? Can I have details.
