Re: Early registration numbers in India

From the 1963 movie 'Phir wohi dil laya hoon'

A 1950s (?) Willys Station wagon, sporting number J&K 963. Rarely do we see the "&" in the plate itself

Cheers harit
KD is a late Kerala series from I guess the 70s. I have a photo of KDE also.

Karl,
I have 11 photos from J&K 51 to 9890 and they all have the & on the plate actually. The series is said to have started well before 1939. Post war, they used JKA etc

Cheers
Cedric

Here is another "BO" picture. Supposedly taken in 1933.

Thanks. The car indeed belonged to someone in the Bihar Light Horse Regiment, with Regimental HQ at Muzaffarpur.

Re: Early registration numbers in India

Is "MDJ" a Ramnad (Ramnathapuram) District (in Madras State / Tamilnadu) registration ?

If not, what would be a Ramnad registration for the 1940's to 1950's period - MDG ?

Ramnad seems to have been RD pre-independence (Madras Presidency); and MD for Madurai. Thanks

Re: Early registration numbers in India

At the following link are some court case related documents, dating to the 1950s

http://indiankanoon.in/doc/20086/

It mentions two trucks - one, a 1938 Ford V8 registered AWB 230 and the other a 1938 Oldsmobile truck bearing No. AWB 253.

Where would AWB registrations be from?

Re: Early registration numbers in India

Karl,
My list of pre 1939 Bombay presidency letters is far from complete sadly. If they were only at 230 and 253 in 1938 then I guess it was some small town and it's name would have been abbreviated to AWB. Belgaum for example was BGM. have you got any nice old maps?? LOL
Sorry I can't do better
Cheers

Cedric, I am not sure it is Bombay presidency, since it isn't mentioned anywhere. Though there is a passing mention of Kamptee, which is a Cantonment town in Nagpur I think.

Re: Early registration numbers in India

Among new photos received was this MS registered bike. Any idea about this registration, and of the bike? Seems to be carrying luggage in an odd place.
That hand holding the arm is not a girls.

Cheers harit

Looks like a BSA Bantam bike. I was looking at these bike few days ago on google, so that seems to match.
