Re: Early registration numbers in India

Here are a couple of series I haven't seen before. Both cars appeared at a rally in Bhopal, MP, in Dec 2012.

Is GSI a genuine plate? Or just something thrown on for some apparent display.

CIB I assume would be Karnataka, but I wouldn't rule out erstwhile Central Provinces since the car is in Bhopal.

So maybe it is Louis Trichardt district. I googled that for images, there were a few old automotive photos, but all were taken from the side
Maybe we can get some more confirmation.

GSI appears to be a temporary number to fill in a space. Also stands for Geological Survey of India
CBI is either Karnataka, or another space filler.

Re: Early registration numbers in India

Hi,

There were no "CBI" registration series in Karnataka.

Cheers,

Harit,
It would have been TAJ 123.456 if it was Transvaal. TAJ plus 6 digits on two sets of 3.
The only one I know of that fits is Tanganyika.

GSI is not an Indian number that I am aware of and
CIB would be Bhopal 1973 or 1974 from the details I have.
Cheers

It is a 70's beetle,so it bearing a Central provinces registration series is very unlikely.

Re: Early registration numbers in India

Another TAJ number, at this rate maybe we will cover the whole series.
This photo has a date of 1966. Both the earlier photos appeared older, maybe 1940's, and were in B+W, but this is much later, an early colour photo. And yet it is a 4 digit series. Maybe numbers were re-issued.
As is common with all 3 photos, the people appear to be Indian origin, but the location may be in Africa.

Re: Early registration numbers in India

Harit,
The Merc is a W111 or W112 series and they were built from 1959 to 1965. Called Fintails, they are fairly easy to spot :-)
I am not happy that this is a 60s registration and the other TAJ series we have seen are much earlier, both being what I presume are late 30s cars. The late 30s cars could be from Africa but not the 60s one I don't think.
My list has that India used TA for Tamil Nadu from 1979 but I only have a very few TAx photos to confirm it. Even if TA was earlier than 79, I don't think it is possible that it could be for this car.
I will have to do some more digging!
Cheers

MDJ, TNJ, TNM, TDJ, TAJ, TCJ & TAV were indeed used in Vellore (Tamil Nadu)

http://www.tn.gov.in/sta/a2.pdf

BTW:This gentleman would have bought a used car from other state and would have got this registered in Vellore.

Waseem.

Even if TAJ was a Vellore regn., there is something about the pic. (esp. the attires of the people) that indicate that this pic. was taken much before the 70s, ie. 60s itself, when the car was new.
So possibly it may not have been in India but in some other place with a TAJ regn.

Harit's note clearly states the photo is from 1966!
Besides, I see what looks like skylights / attic vents on the roof of the buidling - not sure we had those in India in the 1960's.

Inspired to do more digging, I too have some TAx numbers, actually I have two TAG xxxx, both in Ooty.

As pointed out by many, I too don't think this particular photo is India, but I'm going by the font and style of the plate.
