I posted this in the Vintage section of pakwheels, some one replied that he has a 1963 Beetle with KAE registration, so this could fit.

Cheers harit

Hey I won't put too much in favour of Karachi

Mombasa - Kenya also had KA series in the 1950s. The car I think is one of the Hillman Minx series, which was immensely popular in all of the East African states and many Indians working for the British Administration in East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania/Tanganyka etc had these cars and hence the photo could have originated from one of the "British African Pensioners" family

The background of the picture kind of looks like African Bush country as well

Best Regards & Drive Ride Safe

Ram

Re: Early registration numbers in India

Ram,
You are correct that KA was issued from 1950 onwards in Mombassa as well as from 1947 in Karachi. In fact KA, KB, KC, KD and KE were all issued in Kenya at that time. KA, KC and KD are also Karachi numbers - although KC and KD are later issues and, just to confuse everything, KA, KB, KC and KD are all Indian numbers from Karnataka and Kerala from the 1970s.
Cheers

Kenya also had KFU I remember. An acquaintance had migrated from Kenya had brought his Fiat Millecento which had the number KFU 543.

KA is a Karnataka series NOW ie. post 1989 when the current Indian number system started (eg. KA 01, KA 03 etc.) but there was no 'KA' series in Karnataka back in the 70s, as it was still known as Mysore state then and had the ME series numbers until around early 80s, followed by the 'C' series (CA was mainly in Bangalore I think) which would have been after the state was renamed Karnataka.

Re: Early registration numbers in India

Stanher,
KA was Karnataka from 1973 to 1979 according to my list. I double checked everything again and you are right - well done that man! I need to correct the lists.
I have a confirmed photo of a KA in Karachi taken during the war and no post war photos of KA in India at all - just in Pakistan and Kenya.

I also have KK on my list as Karnataka 73-79 and again no photos at all so that entry is rubbish also.

T-BHP is great for sorting these old numbers out - many thanks to you all.
Cheers

Re: Early registration numbers in India

This is a J&K registration, it says JK Transport 371, strange is the word "Transport" in the registration plate. This photo would be of around 1950.
This was bus no 5, a Tourist Bus Service to Wular Lake.
And see the people sitting on the bus, a Chevy, normally kids sat on cars!!

Cheers harit

Also MY. Most KSTRTC buses were MYF and MEF. Dont know the obsession with F. Even now after KA letters, its either G or F
C had CA, CN and others.

Re: Early registration numbers in India

chikku,
CR was a late Karnataka series but I don't have that many photos to work out if the X was a vehicle class or an RTO. I think it was probably a vehicle class (commercial actually) but cannot say for 100%.
Cheers
