Correct, and the second car is a Bentley

Well the cars were all in one photo

Here is a brand new Buick 1931? with what appears to be a temporary registration number, taken probably in Madras. Madras registrations were MC and MCP, and apparently many places also had a temporary numbers system. I wonder if Cedric has seen this before.
I came across a very interesting lot connected to a cinema in Madres. This photo was used to screen an ad in the cinema.

Re: Early registration numbers in India

Harit,
Rearding the 'backwards' HYX numbers, I would say that in the early days of independence, backwards numbers were rare but I have seen other photos. Why people did it I have no idea.
As for MC17W, a perfectly standard Madras city dealer number. 17 is the dealer and each dealer appended different letters for the different plates. MC07D was reported as being in use in Madras in the 1930s.
Much the same system as the big dealers use today when sending batches of buses for export. Every batch of Tata buses that arrives in the UAE has the same dealer numbers - MRN11A upwards with two serial letters being used after Z.
Cheers and ta for the picture.
Cedric

Re: Early registration numbers in India

This is a Plymouth / Dodge with a "Kerala" number plate. I cannot make out what is written below.
Is Kerala the only state to have cars registered in the name of the state? I am presently not aware of others.

Cheers harit

MSV is a Madras (now Chennai) regn. Madurai had only(?) MDU (then succeeded by TMU/TNU after the state was renamed TN post 1970, but the 'U' remained constant)

I cant say what model exactly the Wagon could be but MSV 2044 would date to 1962 (my 1962 Standard Companion AAY 3131 was originally MSV 2219)

In Kerala official cars of the persons holding cabinet rank and equivalent positions have only Kerala State and a number written below that as seen in the photo. But the present status is that all these cars have individual registration numbers like other vehicles but those numbers are not usually displayed. In the past there could have been a situation when these cars did not have individual normal registration plates.

I think you mean Hindustan 14 - do share some pictures when possible.

ORL is an Orissa registration, but can you tell us where in Orissa?

if it is a 47 it must be a Hindustan10, Hindustan 14 came only in 1948 last and continued upto 53 end when Newlook came

My mistake. Its Hindustan 14. Black in colour.

It was in Boudh district with my great grandfather. Now my uncle has restored it completely and is using it. It resides and can be seen moving in the streets of Bhubaneswar.

I don't have any pics with me currently. Will ask my uncle to mail some pics.

Somehow I get the feeling this is not in India at all- maybe a neighbouring country? 'stand to be corrected.

Maybe Cedric could help with the number?
