Indeed would elaborate on that. Same state its a no as harit has rightly put it. You can get the changeover done in some other state if the car/bike is transported there and some permanent address documents are provided. I have heard of agents circumventing rules and getting the job done in another state.
For instance Maharashtra does not allow conversion of petrol engines in 4 wheelers to diesel legally. So one fellow took his old Amby to M.P. got that registered there, next got fitted a diesel and brought it back here.

In A.P. there is lot of craze for 9999. This number gets auctioned for Rs. 5 lakhs or more. The least one settles with (among those who really bother about these auspicious/ fancy numbers) is a total of 9. :-)

My car's number is AP 16 AU 1080. I have to pay Rs 5000 premium for it.

VIP number plates which have value are basically single digit, then repetitive numbers like 77, 777, 7777, and then those ending atleast in 00 or 000. But there are other fancy numbers. Many keep 786, religious symbolism. Others like 8055, this number if stylised reads BOSS. And I believe that the owners of Premier Automobiles had a certain number on almost all their cars, and it was an odd 4 digit number.

Now, can anybody tell if JAM was an official series in Jamnagar?

Harit,
The only letters from the Baroda, Western India and Gujarat Agency that I know of are JAM for Jamnagar. So yes that is it. Any idea what the date of the car or photo is?

There must have been others from this agency but they are unknown to me.
Cheers
Cedric

I am not at all sure about the registrations of cars in Gujrat before 1940. I would have presumed that places like Baroda, Ahmedabad also carried on with the single letters of Bombay.
Besides JAM, there was definitely SSV which was prevailing in Saurashtra. And then there was KHV, with was prevailing in Kutch state, in cities like Bhuj. This is a Merc registered as such and was from there.
