MC existed as well, probably before MC/P. There was also MC-1234-X.
I read the number as MC 3U23 instead of MC 3023, thus thinking that this is something new.
Correct, MC was Madras, when MC got exhausted they started MC P. Just as we had in Bombay, BOM 1234 when exhausted got an X. Everyone evolved the way they felt like till the Government changed rules in 1939 with a new act and lots of placed had to re-register all their vehicles.

BTW, from where is MSS? I have a Buick convertible pictured.

Cheers harit

Karl,
As far as we can tell, MC/P was after MC and MC/Z was after MC/P. I have photos of both but have never seen an MC/X. Are there any photos of MC/X to be had?
Cheers
Cedric

Harit,
Regarding MSS, MSL-MSZ were Madras state from '47 to '68. The registrations were by place not vehicle type and I have MSS as Madras East which used MST, W, S, R, O and M before moving on to TM and a serial letter.
Cheers
Cedric

I have a fair amount of MC series, ranging from MC 1 to MC 9403.

Then I have MC-073-B, and M.C.13.F. I also have MC/P xxxx. Not seen MC/Z.

Followed by MSC, MSL, M, P, Q, R, S, V, W, X, Y, Z. There are many more MDx series.

The rear axles of the buses seen have a single wheel, whereas there is provision for two plus two wheels on the axle.

(I posted this picture on the thread "Images of Traffic Scenes from Yesteryear's" post # 48, but the number plate is so special that I felt it must be seen here too)
Anjan ji,this BL series was also there in mumbai, (Bombay) as in early 1990. We can see many maruti 800 having BLL. BLB.and scooters with BLC. In fact our Maruti van of 1987 had BLL 142.as regd No.

Karl,
Any chance you can post the MC/B and MC/F photos? I have not seen these before.
This is the MC/Z I have. I found it on Team-BHP but I have no idea which thread.
Cheers

This is the MC/Z I have. I found it on Team-BHP but I have no idea which thread.
M.C.13.F is a Morris photo, in my notes I've written I got it from you Let me dig out the image.

The MC Z Wolseley you posted is from the family albums of member Wasif. He had posted some super images on the nostalgic thread.

Re: Early registration numbers in India

Karl,
How embarassing! On further digging in my files, I find I have 3 Madras dealer/temp plates from the 1930s MC-07-D, M.C.13.F and MC17W.
The MC17W I got from Harit and is white on red. The other 2 are white on black and I believe they are dealer plates but I guess they could be private vehicles. I am thinking that maybe the reason the private plates had MC over P or Z is differentiate them from the dealer plates with the dots or the dashes. Certainly the earliest dealer plates in some states were white on black and we have no idea when the white on red started.
What does MC-073-B look like? It could be a dealer plate.
Cheers
Cedric
