WMG would be West Bengal. Do you recall the full registration?

Not exactly an early registration number, but could anyone tell me when does the 'MMU' Series in Bombay date from?

Thanks in advance.

Probably in 80s.

I remember MMD 000x in 1980 almost a recent car then. This may be around 82.

Sudarshan
Sir, is it possible that it dates from the early seventies by any chance?

Because MMU 53xx is a 1100 D registered on the Tenth of November, 1972.

Unlikely. Your Delight would have been re-registered at some point, probably in the 1980s, and the regn date 10th November 1972 is probably for the original registration number (usually written as Old No. ABC 1234 at the top right hand corner). The MMU regn date should also be mentioned somewhere in the book.

As Karl has suggested, seems the case with your car.

I was Just a school going kid then. The car I mentioned belonged to state Secretariat & they maintain new cars, so quite unlikelly that they would have provided some 8 year old car for a dignitary.

Re: Early registration numbers in India

An old series of Assam is visible here

https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/vinta...ml#post3292870 (Nostalgic automotive pictures including our family's cars)

It shows a Vauxhall, picture dated 1939, with a plate reading 'A 2699 L'

Hi Cedric,

Was this a known series of Assam? How far did this series go?

Here is another number plate not known. The car is a Rover, the guys look Indian, this could be anywhere in India, East Africa or even further east like Malaysia for example. Any idea where this could be?

Cheers harit

Looks like EBD 1-EBD 999 were used by Northamptonshire, U.K. in 1946-49.

The picture does not look like England though!

But this is 1519, so wouldn't fit (upto 999)

Neither does the style of plates somehow. I've never seen a 'dot' on English plates, and even their hand painted plates were usually much neater in period.

The only photos I have ever seen from the 1902-39 series in Assam were A nnnn or AM nnnn and the A or AM could be before or after the numerals. AM was certainly issued in the 1920s so I guess it is possible that A nnnn L was used just before everything changed in 1939 and Assam became ASx nnnn.
Not a nice definitive answer I know but until you dig up some more 1930s Assam photos, thats the best guess for now.

The EBD.1519 is not a UK number. It is the first series issued in Dacca (D for Dacca), E. Bengal in 1939. Later, of course this became E. Pakistan on Partition and the series EBx carried on until about 1972 after independence as Bangladesh when they changed to Bengali script.

Another great find young sir. As was kartikeyal's find on Ebay.
Cheers

The Assamese Vauxhall is on its way to India.

Here is another one. Delhi I presume? And a dot is seen on the plate. And why is the plate in white? The cars looks private, not a commercial.
The background looks like India. Not much has changed for this century.

Cheers harit
