Re: "Doing a Mysore" again - Cars of Maharaja of Mysore

Continuing analyzing the video of Edward, The Prince of Wales, Tour of India in 1922, we are again very fortunate to spot MYSORE 1 & MYSORE 2 in their original body style. Clearly both the cars were doing very well in 1922

MYSORE-1 : Chassis # 1680, 1911 Silver Ghost, Barker bodied Roi-des-Belges

Thanks to the BFI video, we get see these cars in their original body style. We have not been able to access the pictures of these cars in their original body style earlier.

Re: "Doing a Mysore" again - Cars of Maharaja of Mysore

Mysore Notes - Steam cars

Here are some notes on the Steam Cars from the Mysore Stables

Year 1910: - List of cars belonging to the Palace includes a 20 HP Steam Car

Year 1913:
  • "Purchase of the cars for the Dewan & Govt. Vol II
Cars under the service of the Dewan
    1. ....
    2. ....
    3. White Steam Car (converted into petrol driven)
    4. ....

    6. 1909 White Steam 16/20 HP - Purchased in connection with H.E. the Viceroy's visit

  • Purchase of Steam Cars Vol. II : Letter asking a 15HP Steam Car plus money in exchange for two 20 HP Steam cars for the Palace on 27/05/1913

Lord Gilbert Elliot, the fourth Earl of Minto, (1905-1910) the Viceroy & Governor-General of India visited Mysore in 1909

This White Steam Car was purchased in 1909 in connection with H.E. the Viceroy's visit to Mysore
"Doing a Mysore" again - Cars of Maharaja of Mysore-1.jpg

Mysore seem to have few steam cars, hence must have been a important customer to have the agent visiting Mysore. It is to be noted that at least one the steam cars was converted to petrol

Re: "Doing a Mysore" again - Cars of Maharaja of Mysore

K S Raman has made some fantastic notes on the Automobiles of the Mysore Raj. These notes are from the Palace Admin Reports and are written by his hand. I am not sure as when and how he accessed these reports. It gives me hope that we too may able to do research with proper access.

I happy to share these notes here.

The First Decade

Records from 1902
Purchased Single Cylinder Peugeot 2 seater from Messrs. Tuner Hoare & Co, Delhi.

Records from 1903
Peugeot arrived in Mysore and in 1903 was returned after a shortwhile back to to Hoare & Co. This was replaced with a four seater De Dion car, which came with a driver by the name of Mr. Moriens

Records from 1910
Cars for Government Use in the Palace
1905 Panhard, 15 HP, 4 Cylinder with elongated Tonneau Body to seat 6 people. Fitted with canopy side curtains, glasses at back, front and centre

1905 FIAT, 24 HP, 4 Cyclinder with Roi des Belges body to seat 6 people, fitted with Cape Cart Hood "

Insurance of cars
10 HP De Dion complete with hood, bought on 30th Dec'1905

28/36 HP Daimler, Yellow colour, bought on 10th February 1905

12/16 HP FIAT Cars No. 1122 & 2200, white body picked out in red, bought on 26th November 1905

List of motor cars belonging to the Palace in 1910
Rolls Royce, Pullman, 40/50 HP, Green, Touring
Mercedes, 40 HP, Crimson, Touring
Silent Knight Daimler, 15 HP, Chocolate
Hotchkiss, 30 HP, Blue, Touring
Vulcan, 15 HP, Crimson, Touring
Minerva, 60 HP, Blue, Limousine
Charron, 15 HP, White, Landaulette
FIAT, 14/16 HP, Green, Landaulette
White Steam Car, 20 HP
1910 Daimler, Side entrance Pheaton Type 28-8 1/2, painted cream, 4 cylinder, 22 HP, 4 Seater, Car # 2628 (Eng No.)
Hotchkiss car with body by Simpson & Co."

These are the notes for the period 1900-1910

So the first recorded car in the Mysore Stables, as per these notes, was indeed a small Peugeot from 1902!

French Cars - Peugeot, De Dion, Panhard, Hotchkiss, Charron
British Cars - Daimler, Rolls Royce, Vulcan
Italian Car - FIAT
German Car - Mercedes
Belgium Car -Minerva
American Car - White Steamer

Wish we had pictures to back this list.

The Rolls Royce is probably Chassis # 1680, 1911 Silver Ghost, Barker bodied Roi-des-Belges, discussed earlier.

Cheers

The 1910 Cooch-Behar R-R is likely Chassis 1316 (Barker Tourer Torpedo). I have no idea which the 1913 R-R tourer is.

Original picture likely from John Fasal's The Edwardian R-R.

Keep it going, KPS!

The two R-R are interesting. The 1926 car is likely Phantom I (110YC).
The 1914 car is probably Silver Ghost, 57YB. Did that end up as a bus ????

Any known pictures of the Lincoln ?

Re: "Doing a Mysore" again - Cars of Maharaja of Mysore

I have collated the summary of the Marques and the respective reference years

The Mysore Garage, a picture to recap the greatness of this collection.
Seen from L to R : Mysore 13, Mysore 4, Mysore 3, Mysore 2, Mysore 1, Mysore ??
"Doing a Mysore" again - Cars of Maharaja of Mysore-mysore-1234.jpg

As can been seen, the summary shows 56 Marques including Cars, Bikes & Trucks. This is what was documented as per the Notes, but there could have been actually many more. French, British, American, Belgian, Spanish, German cars and more including a humble Hindustan Landmaster!

This is only a summary of Marques, not number of cars, bikes or trucks
"Doing a Mysore" again - Cars of Maharaja of Mysore-mysore-summary-1.jpg
The last is Hotchkiss

"Doing a Mysore" again - Cars of Maharaja of Mysore-mysore-summary-2.jpg
The last is Wolseley
