BMW iDrive 8.5 coming soon; offers a smartphone-like interface

All models currently running the iDrive 8 system, will get the new software via an over-the-air update.

BMW is all set to roll out its new iDrive 8.5 infotainment update in the coming months. All models currently running the iDrive 8 system, will get the new software via an over-the-air update. This includes the brand's i4, iX, 7 Series, X5, X6, X7 and the plug-in hybrid XM.

However, what's interesting is the fact that the new iDrive 8.5 will offer customers a smartphone-like experience. Reports state that the new system is said to have a structure similar to that of an iPhone and will allow users to customise and reconfigure the home screen.

The system will have a vertical section on the driver's side of the screen for easy access to media, navigation and vehicle setting functions, while a "home" icon at the bottom brings them back to the home screen. BMW also says the new system will have fewer layers, meaning the driver will not have to dig deep to find a specific function, translating to reduced distractions.

The BMW iDrive 8.5 is in-line with the brand's mission of prioritizing touch and voice controls. The brand is also working on the iDrive 9 system, which will get Android software and is scheduled to debut on the 2024 BMW X1.
