Nissan pulls Teana out of India line-up

Nissan Motors India has pulled the Teana off its website, leading us to believe that the company could have discontinued the sedan in the market. This makes it the third model to be discontinued after the 370Z coupe and X-Trail SUV. 

The second-generation Teana, which was on sale in India, has been phased out internationally to make way for the third-generation car. So, it is obvious that Nissan India cannot get CKD kits to assemble the car.

The Teana, which was the company's flagship sedan, was launched in 2009. It was positioned against the then segment leader, the Honda Accord. The Teana's sales never managed to take off. The market also shifted towards diesel engine cars, compounding the petrol-only Teana's problems. With the Skoda Superb now dominating the shrinking segment, Honda pulled the Accord out of the market in December 2013. Volkswagen's Passat was also discontinued around the same time, though the company denied it. The Teana's sales over the year have been dismal with only 15 units being sold in the January-December 2014 period.

With the Teana gone, the Toyota Camry and Hyundai Sonata are the only surviving sedans in the D2 segment apart from the Superb. However, there are rumours that the Honda Accord and Volkswagen Passat may be reintroduced later this year.
