Elite i20 & i20 Active now with dual airbags as standard

Three weeks ago, we reported that the Hyundai has given the Elite i20 some updates like a glossy black C-pillar, shorter roof-mounted radio antenna and the deletion of the auto-dimming IRVM (link to news article). Now a media report indicates some more changes to the 2016 models.

The Elite i20 now will be available with only 5 variants instead of 6 - Era, Magna, Sportz, Asta and Asta (O); the Sportz (O) variant has been dropped. The Asta (O) variant will now sport projector headlamps with cornering function + DRLs, which was earlier missing.

Autocar reports that now all variants of the Elite i20 & i20 Active will be equipped with dual airbags as standard.

It seems that the Elite i20 is facing the heat from the Maruti Baleno, which is its newest, feature-rich competitor. The Baleno has ABS and dual airbags as standard on all variants while the Elite i20 has only 3 out of 5 ABS-equipped trim variants.

No changes have been made to the engine or transmission options of either the i20 Active or the Elite i20. Prices and other details are yet to be officially revealed by Hyundai.

Hyundai Verna, i20 Active to get touchscreen infotainment

Earlier this year, we had reported that Hyundai is planning to equip the Elite i20 hatchback with a touchscreen infotainment system (click here to read report). Now, according to a new media report, this touchscreen infotainment system is likely to feature in the i20 Active and Verna 4S sedan as well.

Recently, Hyundai had deleted some features form the Elite i20. It is believed that these deletions were carried out so that the infotainment system could be accommodated without raising the price of the car drastically. With the touchscreen infotainment system being added to the Elite i20 and i20 Active, Hyundai plans to take on the recently launched Honda Jazz, which is equipped with the feature. The updated models are expected to hit the showrooms by the end of July.

The Verna 4S has been slipping down the charts month after month. The Honda City and Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, which are the two strongest players in the segment, have touchscreen infotainment systems on their higher variants. The updated Verna 4S is expected to go on sale around Diwali.

Hyundai to increase Elite i20 production to meet high demand

Click here to read our review of the Elite i20

The Elite i20 has been Hyundai's best-selling model in India. 10,000 units of the car are built at the company's Chennai factory every month. However, the demand for the Elite i20 is high and there is a waiting list of about two-and-a-half months for the car. Hyundai fears that it could lose customers if it is not able to supply enough units of the car. To address this issue, it is preparing to ramp up the production of the hatchback.

At present, the plant is churning out the i20 at full capacity and with the increase in production, a few thousand more units of the car can be expected to be manufactured every month. Earlier this year, we had reported that the Santro had been discontinued so that production of models such as the i10 Grand and Elite i20 could be ramped up. Hyundai believed that it could take production of the i20 up to 14,000 units with the move.

Till March 16, 2015, the Elite i20 had managed to clock 4,68,184 enquiries and 1,03,960 bookings. Hyundai managed to sell more than 1,00,000 units of the car within 7 months of its launch. It has also launch a cross-hatch based on the Elite i20 called the i20 Active. Click here to read our review of the i20 Active.
