Volkswagen ID.4 unveiled in India ahead of launch

The Volkswagen ID.4 will compete with the Skoda Enyaq, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 in the Indian market.

Volkswagen India recently showcased the ID.4 electric SUV at the Annual Brand Conference. The EV is expected to be launched in India later this year.

The VW ID.4 is based on the MEB platform. Globally, the electric SUV is available in single and dual-motor configurations. The former is powered by a 58 kWh battery. The top-spec 'GTX' variant features a dual-motor setup powered by a 77 kWh battery. VW claims it can cover 480 km on a single charge.

We still don’t know which of these variants will be offered in India. That being said, ID.4 will be imported into the country via the CBU route, thus attracting higher import duties.

VW ID.4 owner test drives the BYD Seal, shares his various observations

The Tesla Model 3 is the only competition to this Chinese EV as other electric vehicles like the Hyundai Ioniq 6 and Volkswagen ID.7 are much more expensive.

BHPian StarrySky recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

I test-drove the BYD Seal in Finland.

BYD has taken aim at the Tesla Model 3 with the Seal, and it shows in its looks, interior, features, specs and price. If Tesla had given the Seal's looks to the updated Model 3, it wouldn't have looked out of place. The 3.8S badging, however, looks cheesy. But way better than having Build Your Dreams plastered across the rear.

Coming from a crossover, my biggest complaint was ingress/egress. The interior is not as minimalist as the Tesla (thankfully). The seats are comfortable, but I thought maybe they were a bit too soft. The front seats provide good support. The steering wheel is chunky and nice to hold. There are some real buttons there as well. One ergonomic issue is that the edge of the main infotainment screen is blocked by the steering and the driver's hands when in motion. We can put the screen in portrait mode, but I heard that Android Auto and Apple Carplay don't work in portrait mode. The infotainment screen and software are quite responsive, much better than my VW ID.4.

I drove mainly on a busy highway, so I wasn't able to go beyond 80km/h or test any high-speed dynamics. The ride didn't feel plush, but I wouldn't call it stiff either. In this area, my VW ID.4 has the edge.

I didn't test the economy, but the car was showing a range of 462km at 95% at around 2-3C temperature. I am not sure if it is calculated based on the recent consumption or a value based on the WLTP range.

The regen didn't feel too strong, but the brakes felt very sharp. Perhaps, it is only a matter of getting used to the car.

The HUD was bright and legible, but navigation prompts did not show up on the HUD.

The rear seats also felt comfortable, and the under-thigh support felt good for a person of average Indian height. Taller passengers will also not complain about knee room. But under-thigh support could be lacking, as it is not possible to slide the feet under the front seats. No idea how the ride is at the back, as I was always the one driving. Headroom is also good in front and rear.

The storage space is good in the front and the central storage is deep. The cabin quality felt good upfront.

The Seal is feature-packed and there is almost nothing that is missing. The Seal is priced at €47990 for the RWD version and €50990 for the AWD version here. Tesla Model 3 is the only competition, as the Ioniq 6 and ID.7 are much more expensive, to the tune of nearly €12000. I wouldn't be surprised if this car starts selling in large numbers.

Volkswagen ID.4 India launch in 2024; to be imported as CBU

VW will bring some cars from its global portfolio, including the ID.4.

Volkswagen has confirmed its plans to launch the ID.4 electric SUV in India this year. It will be imported via the CBU route to test consumer readiness.

Ashish Gupta, Brand Director, Volkswagen Passenger Cars India, stated that electrification is one of the priorities which will play out in the country in three stages.

Initially, VW will bring some cars from its global portfolio, including the ID.4. “That’s a market introduction and testing of the market to see how our portfolio fits,” he said.

“The second part, through parts and components, involves local assembly for economies of scale and increased volumes. The third part, planned for 2026, is local electrification, as scaling up electrification involves localisation” Gupta added.

Volkswagen has been evaluating the ID.4 for India since 2020. Globally, the ID.4 is offered with a range of powertrains including single-motor rear-wheel drive and dual-motor all-wheel drive configurations. The GTX variant packs 299 BHP and is powered by a 77 kWh battery pack. VW claims it can cover up to 480 km on a single charge.

Electric vehicles are expected to comprise 18-30% of new car sales by the end of this decade. By 2030, it is estimated that around 1 million EVs will be sold every year.

VW ID.4 gets first OTA system update: Step-by-step installation guide

There have been some minor navigation and infotainment updates before, but this was a system update. However, it wasn't a major update.

BHPian  StarrySky recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

It's been a while since I updated this thread.

I haven't been racking up the miles in the ID.4, so other than routine running there hasn't been too much to report. Add to that a little bit of laziness.

Anyway, I received the first OTA update a few days back.

There have been some minor navigation and infotainment updates before, but this was a system update. However, it wasn't a major update:

Interestingly, it took me a couple of days to start the installation, as the "Install" button always appeared to be inactive. Since I was mostly doing very short trips, I thought maybe the software download kept getting interrupted and that was the reason why installation was not possible. So during the weekend, I drove around for an hour. But still no luck! Then I noticed the little "Switch off side lights" information on the screen and manually switched off the lights after parking. And voila, the "Install" button was enabled!

Once I pressed the "Install" button, the next step was to leave the car and lock it.

I knew that the installation would only happen once I was out of the car and not using it, so I always assumed that lights would be off anyway when the installation started. I have no idea why lights needed to be switched off for the "Install" button to become enabled.  Just one of those ID software special features I guess.

There was no information in the VW ID App about the ongoing installation or its status. There was no notification in the app when the installation was completed. Thankfully, the next time I used the car, it displayed a message that the installation was complete.

I had written earlier about the GPS acting weird during a trip. At that time, it was on a rural road with tall trees on both sides, so I did not think much of it. But a few weeks back, I experienced the same during a local trip. I was on a wide-open highway with no buildings around. Stopping and starting the infotainment system or the car did not solve it. It was still widely inaccurate when I parked the car in my apartment parking. As you can see, the GPS had me floating in the sea many kilometres away!

Thankfully, parking the car overnight solved the issue.

Volkswagen could confirm the ID.4 for India in May 2023

The Volkswagen ID.4 GTX comes with a 77 kWh battery that is said to offer 480 km of range on a single charge.

The Volkswagen ID.4 has been testing in India for quite some time, but we haven't heard anything specific about its launch date yet. According to media reports, the electric SUV could be greenlit by VW HQ by May 2023.

Ashish Gupta, Brand Director, Volkswagen India, stated that the launch of the ID.4 in India "is a matter of when and not if". He added that the ID.4 is available globally and that testing and validation for EVs takes time.

Given the hot and humid weather and rough road conditions in India, the platform has to undergo extensive testing. The car's suspension has to be fined tuned to suit our roads. Gupta also added that it takes time to assemble the parts and packages for CKD kits that are exported to other markets.

The new battery safety norms are also said to be one of the reasons for the delay. The regulations were introduced in two phases and require automakers to test each cell, battery management system and onboard chargers.

All-electric Volkswagen ID.4 India launch expected in 2023

We are likely to get the dual-motor version of the ID.4 in India. It would compete with the likes of the Kia EV6 and the Hyundai Ioniq 5.

Volkswagen is planning to introduce its first all-electric offerings in India. The carmaker has confirmed that the ID.4 electric crossover will be launched in the country in 2023.

The Volkswagen ID.4 is expected to be imported in limited numbers via the CBU route. Reports suggest that road trials of the car will commence by September this year.

The company has ruled out local assembly for now as it would require the setting up of a whole supply chain. It would require at least 3-4 years and huge investments. Instead, the ID.4 will serve as a test bed to evaluate the electric ecosystem in India, before moving to a local assembly.

In the international market, the ID.4 is offered in two versions. The single motor version packs 201 BHP and 310 Nm, and a 77 kWh battery that offers a maximum range of 520 km (WLTP cycle). The all-wheel-drive variant has 295 BHP from two electric motors and a range of 480 km.
