Rumour: Toyota Vios to be showcased at 2018 Auto Expo

Toyota will reportedly be showcasing the Vios sedan in India at the 2018 Auto Expo, which is scheduled in the month of February next year. The car will likely be launched in the country after April 2018.

The Vios sedan has already been spotted testing on public roads in India. Toyota is expected to bring the facelifted model of the third-gen Vios to India, which is already on sale in Thailand. In terms of design, the car comes with a v-shaped front grille, new projector headlamps with LED parking lights, vertical LED DRLs embedded on either ends of the front bumper, wraparound taillights and a chrome strip on the tailgate.

Toyota Vios spotted testing in Lonavla

A set of new spy shots has surfaced on the Internet, which shows the Toyota Vios sedan being tested in Lonavla, Maharashtra. This isn't the first time that the Vios has been spotted in the country. Toyota has been testing the sedan on Indian roads for quite some time now. The car was first spotted in February 2015. We had also reported that the automaker has imported a single unit of the Vios from Thailand for R&D Purpose in July 2016. Hence, Toyota might be planning to finally introduce the Vios in the Indian market.

The car spotted in Lonavla doesn't wear any camouflage. The T-badge on the front grille had been removed, while badges on the tailgate were hidden. Major design elements of the car include a slim front grille detailed with a chrome strip in the middle, swept back headlamps, wrap around taillights, and 8-spoke alloy wheels.

Specification related information about the India-spec Vios hasn’t come to light yet. However, Toyota might retune the existing 1.5-litre petrol and 1.4-litre diesel engines of the Etios to power the Vios. This will help minimize costs and thus launch the car at a fairly competitive price tag.

The Vios will fill the gap between the Etios and the Corolla Altis in Toyota's Indian portfolio. If launched in India, it will compete against the likes of the Honda City, Maruti Ciaz, and Volkswagen Vento.

Toyota Vios imported from Thailand for R&D purpose

Thank you to BHPian RavenAvi for sharing this information with other enthusiasts!

A single unit of the Toyota Vios sedan has been imported into India for R&D purpose. A quick search on Zauba shows that Toyota India has imported a white coloured Vios from Thailand, which docked at the Chennai port on 2nd July 2016. This indicates that Toyota Kirloskar Motor's plans to launch the Vios sedan in India in the near future.

The Vios imported into India is equipped with a 1300 cc petrol engine. In the international markets, this engine is capable of generating 85 BHP @ 6,000 rpm and 122 Nm of torque @ 4,400 rpm. This engine is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. The Vios in Thailand is powered by a 1.5-litre dual VVT-i petrol engine that churns out around 106 BHP and 140 Nm of torque. This engine is coupled to a 7-speed CVT gearbox.

It will be interesting to see how Toyota India places the new sedan in its portfolio, especially with the smaller 1.3-litre petrol engine.

An Insider on Toyota India's future plans

Thank you to BHPian mroptimist for sharing this information with other enthusiasts.

Toyota's future plans have been revealed. Here's a look at what we can expect:

  1. Lexus will be launched this year.
  2. The plant shutdown for a week is a part of a routine process and nothing unusual. So do not expect to see a new assembly line being added.
  3. As suspected by many fellow BHPians the current Innova's production will stop in about three months' time to make way for an all new model.
  4. The current Innova will continue to be produced in its commercially popular trim GX for a year, mainly catering to the taxi segment. No other trim like E, G, VX and ZX of current Innova will be available three months from now.
  5. The all new Innova will have an ex-showroom price hike of Rs. 1-1.5 lakhs. The highest trim level is not expected to cost more than Rs. 22 lakhs on road.
  6. The all new Innova will be initially restricted for a year for personal buyers only.
  7. The all new Innova will come with 6-speed manual and automatic transmissions.
  8. The Vios and Rush will be launched next year.
  9. Starting from 2016 until 2020 Toyota, will launch a total of 30 models (this includes the Lexus range).
  10. The current emphasis on safety will translate to all vehicles getting equipped with ABS as standard from January 2016.
  11. There is no news of a refreshed Etios Cross which has been speculated by some automotive websites.

Scoop! Toyota Vios caught testing in Bangalore

A big thank you to BHPian Sandy_AR for sharing these images with fellow enthusiasts!

Rumours of the Toyota Vios's launch in India have been afloat for over a year now. While no official statement has confirmed the sedan's prospects in our sub-continent, the 3rd generation Vios has just been spied on test in Bangalore, Karnataka. It is still unknown if the Vios is on test purely for r&d purposes or if the Japanese automaker plans to launch the car in India.

If the Vios (also known as the Yaris in some markets) is launched in India, it will fill in the C2 segment void that stands between C1 segment Etios and D1 segment Corolla Altis. Engine options could include the 1.5-litre petrol that is currently in use on the Etios, as well as the 1.4-litre diesel that powers Toyota's only sub 10 lakh sedan in the country. Globally, the Vios is available with a 5-speed manual as well as a 4-speed automatic transmission. Rivals for the Vios in India will include the Hyundai Verna, Volkswagen Vento, Skoda Rapid, Maruti Ciaz, Ford Fiesta and the segment leading Honda City.

Toyota developed the Vios to primarily target the Asia-Pacific market. Introduced at the 2013 Bangkok motor show, the 3rd generation Vios is already on sale in markets such as Indonesia, Malaysia, China and the Philippines among others. Currently, the Etios is priced between Rs 6-8.5 Lakh while the Corolla Altis is priced between Rs 13-17.60 Lakh, leaving a comfortable amount of room for Toyota to position the Vios in India.
