re: SCOOP: Chevrolet Sail sedan caught testing. *Clear PICS on Page 9 & 11*

Chevrolet SAIL spotted in India!

"It is no secret that GM India is mulling the launch of the SAIC-developed Sail sedan in India to settle scores with the Tata Indigo Manza, Toyota Etios and Maruti Dzire. Chevrolet has been outpaced by the competition in the B+ segment as the Aveo twins, with outdated styling and petrol engines, are no match to the fuel efficient and updated diesel sedans.
Even with the class-leading 3-year maintenance pack, the Aveo has not contributed significantly to GM India’s sales composition. The blame is completely on the absence of a diesel engine and GM India is apprehensive about tweaking an old platform to provide the diesel option to customers.
GM has not provided cosmetic upgrades to the Aveo either. About three years back, GM gave the Aveo twins an edgier styling makeover globally which has not made an appearance in India.
The Sail sedan, spotted here at a parking lot in unknown Indian location, is the first image of the Chinese vehicle on Indian soil"

re: SCOOP: Chevrolet Sail sedan caught testing. *Clear PICS on Page 9 & 11*

Was going through this post as the Sail looked like an interesting proposition.

However, to put things right, the post was initiated in 2009.

Now, two years hence, the car is yet to see the face of the day?

Also, now with the Beat getting a Diesel Transplant, can we see the same engine in the Sail?

What would be the price point?

And most importantly, will it retain the same unsuccessful name " Sail" during its launch here.

Indian sentiments are pretty conservative as far as names are concerned!!

Re: ACI report: Cruze Updates in pipeline

No updates so far. Chevy sales reps are going gaga over a new Chevy sedan called ... the Sail(?) that is to be launched in February 2012. They said it will be priced around 6-8 L and is not the same as the Sonic. Anyone else heard about it?

Here are some pictures sourced from Google:

The Sail hatch does not excite me. It is a mediocre design and is very boxy at the rear end. Looks like they use a sharp axe to cut off the boot from the Sail sedan.

Chevy needs good diesels for its current cars. Aveo Sedan is a forgotten car and why can't the management work on giving this Sedan a new leash of life by plonking a diesel heart.

Completely agree with you. This looks just like the AVEO UVA. I would any day prefer the new "Sonic hatch" than the Sail.

Is it that only SAIL will be coming to India instead of Sonic or both will co-exist at some point of time later? I any day prefer te Sonic to this. That car was gorgeous. But somehow I still like the SAIL sedan. I hope they give the 1.3MJD 75 bhp on the hatch and the 90 BHP variant on sedan just as a USP among other sedans in the price bracket [I know Manza has a 90 BHP, but still..].

The sedan seems ok, a little boxy though. But looks much better than the dzire, manza, logan and the etios. Pricing is the key. If chevrolet acts a little premium and prices this above the dzire then the game is over.
The hatch is far from exciting, I'm sure it will find moderate numbers just because of its diesel engine. And I hope the overall quality doesnt go down due to SAC's heavy influence.

re: SCOOP: Chevrolet Sail sedan caught testing. *Clear PICS on Page 9 & 11*

I'm disappointed with Chevrolet Instead of bringing in the latest international products in the form of the hot Sonic twins, they are bringing in the Sail twins, which I believe are built on a modified Opel Corsa platform (the one that was sold in India).

Having said that, the Sail sedan can make a case for itself as a well-rounded entry-level sedan and a worthy competitor to the Indigo CS, new Swift compact sedan, Logan and Fiesta Classic, only if Chevy price this GM-SAIC product correctly, after plonking in the 75PS Fiat Multijet!

Not so sure about the hatch though. It looks quite similar to the Aveo UV-A and they cannot position it as a premium B-segment hatch to take on the i20s, (new) Swifts, Polos and the like, either. Only the Sonic hatch would fit into such a position. They have to price the hatch below the above mentioned cars, with the petrol Sail hatch starting just above the Beat Petrol (with some overlap), likewise for the Diesel. So in effect, they have to aim for the entry premium B-segment hatches. This segment has some very good, value-for-money, all round cars in the form of the Maruti Suzuki Ritz and the Ford Figo and the Sail hatch can find the going tough in such a company, even if it has the 4-pot multijet and is priced correctly.

Chevrolet is only replacing the Aveos (which replaced the Corsas in India) in the form of the Sail twins (which are actually built on a modified Corsa platform!) Instead of taking this route, they should have moved a sub-segment higher and brought in the Sonics.

The Sail twins are getting introduced probably because of SAIC which owns half of GM India and wants to sell its products here

Scoop Pics : Chevy SAIL Hatch

Happened to click some pics of Chevy Sail Hatch yesterday on my way back from Nasik to Pune, near Sangamner village.

The moment driver realized we were clicking some pics he just pulled the car off the road, but my friend sitting in co-driver seat managed to get some shots

I have also checked with a friend of mine who works for GM India - he confirmed that GM India is planning to launch Sail (Hatchback & Notchback versions - with 1.2 Petrol & 1.3 Diesel engine options) & couple of MPVs to compete with Innova, Xylo.

Enjoy !!!

This car looks beautiful from behind. However, the only concern is that GM is planning to launch it only in petrol first; if that happens, it may not be a sales success.

The car in picture looks similar to Figo's rear. Is it just me who thinks so?? I hope GM launches this car in appropriate price range.

No Amit, you are not the only one. It does look like Figo from behind and to some extent I20 from side ways.

One of my friend working in GM said pricing will be in close range of 6 lakhs for diesel and around 4.8lk for petrol. He was boasting about stability and mileage let us see how car actually delivers.

re: SCOOP: Chevrolet Sail sedan caught testing. *Clear PICS on Page 9 & 11*

Does Chevy SAIL have any part-sharing with the erstwhile Opel Corsa (SAIL)?

If yes, spares for my Corsa might just get cheaper

Aspects of this car like pricing and cost of ownership will decide it's fate. Also, any time-frame for the launch?
