I haven't read all the pages in this thread but I'm hoping that the OP can be updated to summarize the main reasons (guesses and facts) as to why cars catch fire and what we can do to prevent and escape these events.
All I have is a fire-extinguisher in my car. I'm looking for a centre punch (a pointed hammer) since car windows are designed to endure forces from blunt objects. I'm hoping that my keys would work. I can't afford to test this in my car unfortunately!

- Do we have any sources which tell us the diagnosis of any of these events. All I normally read is that the cause of the fire is being investigated. Now we can guess that electrical wiring issues, modding, fuel leaks are probable causes but do we have any confirmed diagnoses?

- Any shopping sources for fire safety products will be useful. I'm in the market for a centre punch hammer to break the glass. I've heard that pulling out the headrest (and using the metal bars) helps - in an other thread (Honda Civic catching fire I think).

- I have an extinguisher in my car; I'm also considering adding one to my boot with a large water bottle as well. This can help others save us if we're able to open the boot while being stuck in the car.

Again, I'm hoping that the OP can be updated with the info requested for easy public reference.

Looked through and I didn't see this reported ( or did I miss ): http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/...cle4816982.ece : this is from a good 2 weeks ago, but I passed the scene the morning after night the accident had happened and it was a sight to see .. heart churning.. both vehicles were charred completely ( I believe it received nauseating amounts of press coverage anyway already)

I had already posted this in the Cruze thread.

A black Chevorlet Cruze LTZ belonging to a doctor in kollam caught fire while being parked at his residence. The car had just 7500kms on the odo. Electric short circuit is suspected. The car is lying in the service station all covered up (attaching some photos).

Latest news is that Chevorlet has rejected the claim stating that the owner had done some repairs outside the showroom.

I think a school bus caught fire at Mahavir nagar, kandivali today afternoon.
The bus was standing on the road with its "bonnet" open and there were around 3 fire brigades and few cop vans.

Red face Re: Accidents : Vehicles catching fire in India

22 vehicles seized by the Economic Offence Wing (EOW) and placed under the Magathane Flyover in Borivali caught fire on Monday around 1am. It is yet to be ascertained by the police whether they caught fire or were set on fire. Surprisingly this is a classic case of govt officials esp the police violating the SC ruling which banned any vehicle to be parked below the flyover considering the potential risk to the structure.

Of the 22 vehicles, 133 were 4 wheelers, rest 2 & 3 wheelers. These were seized by the EOW officials in regards to the cheating case registered against a local travel company.

Saw a nano going up in flames on Friday in Gurgaon. I had to stop for close to half an hour while the fire tender doused the fire. More details here:

Kollam seems to be on fire. The engine bay of this 2006 Fiesta went ablaze in the heart of Kollam (close by to fire station). Luckily no one was injured.

Well, to date I have seen 2 other cars going up in flames like this. One is the Swift (which I actually saw on fire once in Mumbai near the Vashi bridge and second time on the ghat section on the Expressway)

The other is of course our dear Tata Nano which also I have seen on fire. Now that a Scorpio has also caught fire, I am inclined to believe that this phenomenon may not be directly linked to the model of the car but rather on the way it is maintained and the types of accessories put into it. This is one of the main reasons I try to remain as OEM as I can with spares and accessories as this reduces the chances of a mis-match between the car and its parts ... just my 2 cents
