Not taking my car this time

Which is a good place to stay in Ooty or Conoor ? We (me, wife and 2 year old son) are planning to go end of april or early may.

thanks for your suggestion.

Ooty is higher, but Conoor may be quiter. More places in and around Ooty for teh family. Depends on where you are going to stay, both towns are noisy and if you find some place quieter (say, Fern Hill in Ooty) or prefereably one of the lovely bungalows that can be hired out, take that choice.

I was in Ooty/Conoor (I stayed at Conoor) for New Year's Eve, the roads in Ooty region were in shambles.

April/May are likely to be chaotically crowded. Please avoid the Flower Day - the worst day to be in Ooty - sometime in May

Are you (or any friend of yours) a member of Club Mahindra Holidays?
They have an awesome place there - Danish Villa.

hey mate I can suggest 2 places in Ooty itself ,both are off the City Crowd and is really a nice place to stay. Food is also good.

Try Willow Hill its enroute Kings cliff. Resonable prices and the place is also isolated from the City.(Tariff ranges between 850 - 2000 INR)
I dont know if this place has a website hosted. If you are interested PM me and will give you their number.
If you happen to stay @ Willow Hill pay a visit to Kings Cliff which is up the same road and you will find some real antique's there.

The other hotel is called Kluney Manor bang opposite Fern Hill. This place is an old palace or something of the same sort converted to a hotel.Prices are a lil' on the higher side but trust me its an experience all by itself.

Kluney Manor - Nilgiris Ooty Luxury and Heritage Hotels & Resorts

I have stayed @ both the places and Kluney Manor is somethin different.IMHO one of the best places I have stayed @ Ooty.
Its nowhere close to the City and decent crowd and the hotel folks are really nice.
Do make your booking in advance since Ooty will be crowded around the time you plan to travel.

Happy tripping !!

I had been to Ooty/Coonoor during Dec 2006 and stayed at Hotel Lakeview.
HILL RESORTS - OOTY HOTELS - NILGIRIS | Hill resorts south india - hotels in ooty | tamilnadu hotels south india |Lakeview hotels - nilgiris - hill resorts in tamilnadu - hotel Lakeview ooty, - you can locate them on google earth as well.
- Reasonably priced
- Food at the restaurant - above average
- Cottages - simple and quiet but nothing luxurious
- Ample place to stroll about. Away from the city center yet close to the bus stand and railway station

Another place that is on the way to Coonoor and away from the city is Sagar Holiday Resorts SAGAR HOLIDAYS.COM A friend of mine had stayed at this place and liked it. It has a fantastic view of the Ketty Valley.

Both these offer you the independence of a cottage but you may not get to experience the old world charm of some of the big villas and palaces.

We stayed at Hotel Lake View when we were there around a month back. I will not say that it was a great hotel, but I think it is decent. Food was good too. But the name is a misnomer as the lake is not even visible from any of the rooms.

I have heard some good reviews about Red Hills b'ween Ooty and Conoor. I have not been there though.

RJ..I am planning to hit Ooty during mid of April, I know it would be a crazy time out there, but cant help as my parents are visiting us and have to plan the travel as per their schedule !

So I extensively went thru Nivalink, HolidayIQ and of course Tbhp t-logs and I found that I might have to zero in on Willow Hill. I have even made a tele reservation for 2 rooms with the private garden(2250+tax). Also, I have a budget to stick on !

Now I need your first hand review mainly on the hotel location, as I found one review in HolIQ that Willow hill is far from Ooty which would be a concern, if its true.

Other info on food quality, service and all those would also help !

Thanks mate !

Folks, just saw the willow hill site. Place sure looks good for the price offered. Are there similar places in Conoor?

Isnt it in Ooty main center, as per the guy in Willow hill it looks like it is situated close to 3 kms from Charring cross, 6 kms from Lake etc. Again this is what I would like to confirm at the outset.

Conoor is far from ooty !

The best place to stay at in proper Coonoor town would be at the Taj which, compared to rates at other Taj hotels, seems reasonable. Another place where I've stayed in is at a resort close to Coonoor called the Kurumba Village Resort which at that point of time was managed by Trails India, part of the Orange County Resort chain - Hotels in Ooty & Coonoor | Resorts in Ooty & Coonoor Bit on the costly side though all meals were part of the tariff, which also meant that in case you were out taking in the sights, you always had to head back for your meals ! Which were BTW really good !

I am sure Beejay can help you with accomodation from Coonoor since he is from there !

I was aware of both Taj and Kurumba. Taj used be the Garden-Retreat chain, which now has changed names to Gateway. Kurumba, I had booked, but had to cancel the trip due to some reason.

But the prices quoted of late are in the range of 5-7K. I was looking more like 1-2.5K at most. Willow hill fits the bill in that range very well.
