How is the Ooty conoor road? I see its about 25Km. Is it all ghats, with steep inclines like the Masinagudi stretch?

ooty -coonoor road is good , single road with lot of curves , avoid overtaking and is usually crowded.

I searched the Nahar and found one in front of tamilnadu hotel[ ttdc].

There are two Nahar hotels of same group in ooty.

Which hotel of nahar group do you recommend? nahar nilgiri?

Ooty to Conoor is typically flat with lot of curves. There are a couple of inclinations near Aravangadu and just before you enter Ooty (The highest point on the road). This is where you would encounter slow moving buses and lorries.

Mettupalayam - Conoor is where all the climbing is.

Lot of curves. If you want to overtake, let the bus driver know.. He'll slow down/ let you know if its safe to overtake. However do not expect this courtesy from all bus wallahs. Highly irritating are the cab guys who ply between Ooty and Conoor.

There's a nice deviation road from Yellanahalli which goes down into Ketti Valley and rejoins the road on the other side of the valley. If anyone remembers Sadma (Mundram Pirai) movie or the Chayya Chayya song most of it is taken as the train passes through this valley. Ketti station is where Kamal does that final begging scene. Nice small village with a school in the middle of the woods. St. Georges.

Yellanahalli also has a needles factory where they make needles for almost anything and everything. I don't know if visits are possible without permission.

This is the one for which I had a first hand feedback that the place was decent enough and very much in the hub of Ooty happening !

Nahar Nilgiris Hotel, Ooty, Tamilnadu

I took the Masinagudi stretch to drive to Ooty and did not go through Gudalur. Just wanted to know if the Conoor road is as steep as the Masinagudi one. I did not do Conoor purposefully so that I come back again !

In my opinion, and if I recollect it right from my constant bike trips years ago from Coimbatore to Ooty, passing through Coonor, it isn't as steep as the one from BLR. Other Coonor experts can correct if I have gone wrong here !

Ashish, Nahar Nilgiris is at Charring Cross which is the City Center. Most of the good restaurants, shopping is at Charring Cross. Rooms at Nahar Nilgiris in the range of 2.5K onwards.

Lots of hotels in this part of Ooty.

Hey thanks. Thats exactly what I was looking for. The idea being, if I stay between Ooty and Conoor, would daily travel for about 4 days be OK. Since the hotels near Ooty seemed to be much better suited to my taste and budget than the ones in Conoor.

Easily doable but keep an hour atleast as journey time one way which could be higher during season time and weekends.

Traveling between Ooty and Coonoor is a breeze, it takes only about half an hour and the roads are relatively good. During my recent stay in Ooty, I did this stretch twice and that too in the Omni, no problems. It is definitely nowhere as steep as the Masinigudi Ooty Segur Ghat road.

Thanks. I was quite bowled over by the Sherlock kind of places, which are not plenty in Conoor. So I was toying with the idea of staying in Ooty and going to Conoor. Also I wanted to explore Conoor as I avoided it last time, to come back.

Most welcome. And while in Coonoor, these are some of the places you might care to visit - Sim's Park, Black Thunder (On the road to Mettupalayam), Dolphin's Nose, Lamb's Rock, Lady Canning Seat, Law's Falls, The Droog, Kotagiri and not to forget, book your train ride from Coonoor to Ooty ! Check this out - COONOOR

@S3VA
Yes Sherlock almost. Dates though not decided yet. Initially I was thinking Apr first/second week. But I have some other family commitments. So this may get pushed to May. Also I wanted Sherlock like locations because its towards Coonoor and KC is at the opposite end (Thats what I found out from Google maps).

@kannan666 Thanks. Last time I went to Ooty, I visited all the official tourist places. This time I wanted to go to Conoor, but look at all the off-beat places. So I was thinking a day off for the train, One day for the Emerald and/or Avalanche lake(s), one day for Conoor Local and one day for lazing around . Over all I was looking about 4 days.
