As a kid I remember of seeing this monster parked just outside my dad's official residence.Sadly,it was just left to rust over there. This was well over 15-18 yrs ago.I believe if the body survived the rain and sun,it would still be there.I guess I am going to find out about it and try seeing if I can grab hold of it or maybe another one of it.
Actually, last yr I was in the mood of buying a Jonga & I spoke to some friends in Jabalpur. The info what I got from them was that one can still get hold of a few old pieces over there. But maybe in a very bad condition.

Jonga HO

JONGA stands for "Jabalpur Ordinance and Gun Carriage Assembly" - subsequently renamed "Vehicle Factory Jabalpur (VFJ)" - hence most of the plastic and rubber parts of the JONGA have the VFJ logo embossed on them.
I happen to have had the privilege of driving one of the LAST REMAINING "RCL" JONGAs in the Army - an old 1985 model while I was serving in J&K in 2003-04.
I used to get saluted by all the village kids when I drove past their houses on the moonscape mud-track!
I miss the Jongas!

@ Jonathan
Please try for some detailed pics of RCL JONGA's & also the racing JONGA's that were used by Indian Army in Himalayan Rallies if possible.
One question to ask, can you provide us some details about Specially Fabricated Water Tanks that were fitted on these RCL JONGA's.

Hey guys i have small query regarding the JONGA . Since the JONGA is petrol engine with 3-speed gearbox , is it possible to retro fit a some NISSAN 5-speed gearbox to the OE engine . IF that is possible what would be advantages and dis-advantages?

Let's get back to basics.

Question 1: Why should there be a gear box at all ?
Because you want to keep the engine running in its power band. Engines have a range of operating speed (min. rpm to max rpm) under which they operate efficiently.

There are racing car engines which are tuned to produce best output at high rpms. And there are military truck engines that produce best output at lower rpms.

Then there are engines with a wide-plateau power band (useful over a range of speeds) and engines with a peaky power band (must stay in a narrow range of rpms to be useful at all).

The old Nissan petrol engine does not need frequent gear changes. It shows a lot of its load pulling and slope climbing performance in 2nd gear. Even in top gear it does not go very fast. And for slow rock climbing, 1st gear excels. So...

Question2: Why would you want a 5-speed box for this engine at all ?

the JONGA's 3rd gear feels like 1st gear , you can start off from traffic from 3rd . I have no need for a 5-speed GB , but then bro gave me this idea because he feels 5-speed conversion would make the engine run smoother and might make it more efficient too . I do not know too so im just asking the experts .

Karizma,
I have a friend in the army, a Major who earlier was posted in Rajasthan. His narration is " Fazal...I never felt the need to engage the Jonga in the 4 wheel drive mode even while driving in the desert...in second gear it would just go on". Such is the torque of this beautiful, engine-gearbox combination.
Personally, I feel you should stick to the original setup.
Regards,
