Well, I don't really frequent this forum, because I frankly don't like the moderator's frequent reminders about me not fitting their criteria of being Oxford educated, who speaks perfect English grammar. I mean, I was always mistaken it's an automobile enthusiasts forum rather than Grammar School. I sometimes wonder how many people they might be keeping out due to that, because what if there's a guy who knows his stuff and can help a lot of people, but at the same time, he speaks bad and broken english, but still its understandable enough for people to get what he means. Anyway, since you did'nt get a reply to your query, I figured I'll pitch in.

To help your query, I do have a brand new Jonga's original stock Hitachi carburetor, but I'd like to cling on to it for that moment. If you can ask someone from abroad to buy and send you a downdraft carburetor, do that and get rid of the Solex once and for all. The Solex is a pretty lousy carburetor when compared to the stock Hitachi. It performs badly on inclines where it floods the chamber and the mixture gets too rich. Sometimes, the vehicle wouldn't even start if it's standing on an incline. Since the motor is itself derived from a Chevy motor, it would make sense to buy a downdraft that works better. Try the carburetor meant for the 4litre 6cylinders Jeeps. The Australians and American who have the original Nissan Patrol G60's do just that.

As for the dizzy, there is this company that sells kits to convert your stock distributor to electronic one's. It's called Auto-Escorts Euraka, and if you would looks at the classifieds feom an older auto india or overdrive magazines, you would find the contact number ( the adds at displayed on the last few pages of the magazine ). They basically make those kits for Yamaha Rd350's, Royal Enfield's, Maruti 800, and the petrol jeep, but they can certainly help you since it only involves adding 2 more magnets to a 4 cylinder magnetic cam.

Also, the earlier 62'-64' stock Patrols came with a waterproof distributor, that would enable you to ford through deeper water like a vehicle with a diesel motor does. If you're lucky, you could manage to fix one of them on eBay or something.
Regards,
Bikram S. Sandhu

First a big thanks to help with some one's query. Regarding the English bit out of the countless forums on the net where it is even difficult to properly comprehend let alone understand what is written here is team bhp with a dedicated mod team who make sure that not only things are kept clean but also that they are done in the proper language. I get your point of getting more users but Sir since when is quality less important than quantity.
I have spoken to countless people who swear by team bhp's accessibility because of the ease of understanding and that is by no short measure due to the beautiful language this forum is maintained in. Spend more time here Sandhu Saab and you will also appreciate the painstaking effort of not only the posters but also our wonderful mod team.
Regards.

Hi Bikram,
Thanks for your reply.I was able to source a carburetor kit from Pacco India who still manufacture them.Like you have pointed out the Solex carb has its problems which still persist after the new kit.I shall try and see if a carb can be brought from abroad by some body coming in.Shall try and locate the contact number of Auto Escorts also.
By the way do you belong to Khuranj.

The number of AutoEscorts is Mr Kiran Bhide: Nine Six Five Seven Eight Six Four Zero Zero Eight. He is based out of Kolhapur but couriers it all over India. A great person to deal with.

As luck would have it, this morning I posted about the electronic ignition install on my CJ

Regards,
I have a spare carb (new / unused) that I had got for my Jonga from Mayapuri. Its the same solex carb that came for Indian deleivered Nissan Patrol / Jongas. PM if you want it as I'm in the midst of parting with my Jonga.

Alternatively, try and get the Hitachi carb that came with the 60 series Nissan Patrols in Australia, Middle East and in the JDM. That was rated for higher power outputs in comparision to the Solex ones (145hp in comparison to 110hp) but at the cost of lower FE.

If it was the civilian version - the weight would be in line with what Brutus has mentioned.

If it was an Amry version, then the weight would vary between ~1600kg - ~2100kg depending on the purpose of that Jonga was built for by VFJ (Vehicle factory Jabalpur).

For instance, mine was an RCL gun-carrier which had a lot of added reinforced body panels (cast iron) in some places and other add-ons like the gun mounts, stabilizers, added ammunition boxes, water tanks under the seat and an extended range fuel tank!

Re: JONGA !! Can i have some details about this monster truck

The Hitachi does'nt really decrease economy. Infact, it performs its job much more better and consistently, so it might even return more kilometres to the liter.

I bought the Hitachi from the Jonga spare parts store itself. The first 3500 odd vehicles in the army inventory were actually imported and they were the older 62'-64' models that had 3 vents on the windscreen, full side doors that could be split into half doors by removing a couple of bolts, a Hitachi carb and a waterproof dizzy. Its only when the VFJ started manufacturing the later 64'-66' models ( 2 windscreen vents ), did they move to the Solex since it was more convenient for them to buy parts from a manufacturer
that's already has the resources to build them a similar unit, rather than start production of a entirely new unit.

The Solex carb motor did'nt produce just a 110 horses. You're mistaking the output for the diesel civilian versions that never used a 4 wheel drive. Besides, that motor was redlined at 3200rpm rather than 4000rpm of the P40 ( max horse at @3800rpm ). The Solex actually produced more like 130-135 horses, and just a slight bit less torque.

Infact, another piece of information I received lately was that the army also used Hino 4 liter Diesel powered 4wheel drive Jonga's. All of them were the last production models, late 97'. Until now I used to think the army never used a diesel Jonga, and even the civilian diesel models never had 4 wheeldrive. That is, until I was shown the identification tag plates.

Recently, infact just a week ago, 2 auctioned diesel Jonga's were sold at Nakodar,Punjab by the guy that bought 3 of them from the auction (got another 2 of them later too. So that makes 5) and one of them had just done about 1400kms since new from the factory. Even the paint was in a pretty good condition.

And yes, I do indeed belong to Khuranjh/Khunjah.

This is great stuff and thank you for the clarification!

I just looked at the service manual for the Nissan Patrol G60 that I have (got a copy off another forum) and this is what it states - So you're spot on! This also seems to used on the wiki link for the "P" series motor. Might have to run it on the dyno to see how many horses left

"3,956 cc inline six-cylinder with 125 PS (92 kW) at 3,400 rpm initially. Bore and stroke are 85.7 x 114.3 mm. Later with 135 PS (99 kW), further modifications in 1965 increased the power to 145 PS (107 kW)".

I would presume that the folks at VFJ would have had concerns back then with regards to the fuel efficiency and the availability of the solex in comparison to the Hitachi like you mentioned earlier.

Would be great if you could share some more information on how these were received (full vehicle, half cuts, CKD) by VFJ - Images would be great since there not much available on archives. For instance, my engine block has "Nissan Japan" written on it but has 2 vents on the windscreen but was registered / commissioned to the Army in 1990 (going by the army markings/registration).

Really appreciate your presence here!!
