Re: The Dashcam / Car Video Recorder (DVR) Thread

I need one help. I own the 70mai Pro Plus+ A500S Dual Channel Dash Cam which I got back in March 2022. It is working fine still. But an issue I have started facing since last 1 month is that the system time will get reset every few days or sometimes literally next day.

It resets back to 2021 January 1 date. It has a voice prompt too saying that date and time is wrong.
It happened yesterday and we did not correct the time and today morning again got same voice prompt and now today I have corrected time so will see when the reset happens again.

Does anyone know why this happens? My dashcam is not hardwired and runs through the car's 12v socket.

Re: The Dashcam / Car Video Recorder (DVR) Thread

Folks,

Looking for recommendations for a DashCam that can be (retro)fitted with minimum wiring onto my Corolla Altis. Toyota store person told me that the Head Unit has to be changed to a Display console first before the DashCam can be installed. But then, I'm not keen about the live/display.

So, would like to know if any of you have done/aware of such a non-intrusive minimalistic installation with no hanging cables, preserving the OEM head unit.

Regards
Rex

Check this thread or there are plenty of individual threads on Dashcams.

Decide on your requirements like,
No. of channels
Battery vs Capacitor
Inbuilt display vs no display vs external display
Connectivity
Budget

Thanks for your note, Mr Boss.

2 channel, 3/4K resolution.
Not keen on external display. Built-in display desirable.
Capacitor preferred.
Starvis 2 preferred since lot of night driving.
Option/product with minimum wiring disruption is another criteria.

70mai A810 / Viofo A329 fits all your requirements

Re: The Dashcam / Car Video Recorder (DVR) Thread

I am in need of advise. Have been using DDPAI Mola N3 Pro for about 2.5 years. App sucks big time(disconnects after few seconds most of the times, painfully slow to download the clips etc), but at least video quality is decent.

For last month or so the rear cam feed started becoming noisy with lines across the video. Finally today it completely stopped getting any feed from rear cam. Inspected the cable and it seems like cable was pinched by rubber seal at the boot door (where it came out from the roof liner inside the boot door).

Now, there are two options ahead of me:

1. Get an AV cable and replace the existing one (will need to figure out which cable). I am 90% sure this will fix the issue. However, the new cable will need to be soldered at the rear cam side (cable has a 3.5mm jack to plug into the front cam but the other end is soldered to the rear cam). I am not sure if/how much quality will suffer + taking out the camera glued to read windshield and then sticking it again will also be a pain. Any recommendation?

2. Get a new cam (front + rear). I dont mind spending a bit of money to get a fresh set. However, want to ensure the app experience is good. Which brand has the best and stable app? Do any of them use Wifi 5 GHz instead of 2.4Ghz?

Re: The Dashcam / Car Video Recorder (DVR) Thread

Need to upgrade my 10 year old Transcend DP220 dashcam.

70MAI looks like a very popular and reliable brand.

Any thoughts on the A510 Dual Channel model? Is it worth spending the extra 5k to get the A810 Dual Channel model? Is it necessary to buy the CPL filter separately for each of these?

Any other solid suggestions for what to get?

Thanks!

A510 is fine, has starvis 2 sensor, should be good for low light capture.

Go for A810 if you want motion detected parking surveillance. Other 70mai models' parking surveillance are event based, records from impact time.

Other option could be models from Viofo, not sure about the models available now-a-days though. Never seen any other brand in works, though there are some suggestions in this thread.

CPL filters are not must have but good to have, removes reflection and you get clear video. They are fix and forget sort of thing, suggested not to remove once fixed. Else you have to adjust every time you attach. And it is required mainly on front channel. Due to angle of rear glass, back channel normally do not need CPL filter.

Re: The Dashcam / Car Video Recorder (DVR) Thread

My observations based on a friend who used Qubo budget cams. Qubo excels in night time recording. But excessive lights, such as high beam will totally mask the camera output. If the oncoming traffic is using high beam, the camera will miss the number plate no matter what. Similarly, in day light it works decently well, but the output is not very detailed.

Dashcams will have some amount of battery and will keep the system settings like date and time for 2-3 days and after that they will get reset to the manufacturing date, in my case it goes back to 01-01-2018 and I don't even have voice prompt (mine is 1st gen 70mai 2K cam).

And reason for system settings to reset within a day might be because the power socket might got disconnected.

Only solution for this is to hardwire the camera to car battery so that it won't turn off and also you can use it for capturing critical movements.

Re: The Dashcam / Car Video Recorder (DVR) Thread

I was waiting to buy a non-Chinese Dashcam and finally bought the Pioneer Car Dash Camera VREC-H120SC on Amazon at Rs.2,980/- few weeks back.

This dashcam is made in Vietnam.

I bought a Lexar 64GB Micro SD-Card on Amazon at Rs.1,049/-. Lexar make is used by professional photographers. I hope this SD-Card has better reliability than Samsung and SanDisk.

Front view: It has a small grill for the speaker and may be some ambient light sensor.

This dashcam is provided with USB Type-A to Type-C 3 metre cable, Cigarette lighter USB 5V 1.5A power source, static film and double sided tape for installation.

The installation for my Fronx was very easy, as I routed the cable from the passenger side A-Pillar by pulling out the plastic cover. Put 2 cable ties to the existing harness (sorry I did not take this photo) and routed the cable under the main carpet and to the side of the centre console gap. So the wiring looks neat.

I formatted the SD-Card using the application SD Memory Card Formatter for Windows/Mac provided by the SD Card Association as my SD-Card got corrupted according to the dashcam few hours after the installation. The dashcam will also ask for format using the ZenVue app. The videos are stored in separate folders normal recording, emergency recording and parking recording. I also updated the firmware of the dashcam as the old firmware could be the reason for the SD-Card corruption. Now used this dashcam for few days and no SD-Card corruption.

The dashcam lady will speak in case of the following:
  • Format the SD-Card
  • SD-Card corrupted
  • Start recording
  • Stop recording
  • Emergency recording (even when going on the rumble strips)
My request to all car manufacturers is to provide a USB Type-A power source of 5V 1.5A near the rear view mirror with a auto timer of 1 to 2 hours and auto set battery voltage cut-off so that we can use any dashcam of our choice and will be able to use the parking mode also.

70mai A810 for 4K for A510 if you're okay with 3K. I am using A810 in my ROXX.

The only quality that matters in night time is the ability to record the number plates clearly. Non Starvis 2 cameras are absolutely dogsh*t when it comes to that.
Travel Tech YouTube channel has done this comparison multiple times.

You are right. I have tried several cams, but unfortunately you need high end camera lenses like the ones you mentioned for good night time video capturing. I guess, some software tweaks to reduce the exposure could also help. I try to avoid night drives, until absolutely necessary. High beams are a pain for my deteriorating vision on top of the 12 hour work shifts in front of the screen.

Well not really. Actually the cheapest Starvis 2 dashcam is about 4500Rs - 70mai M200. I used it in my 3D Thar and it was wonderful.
