http://www.gearbest.com/car-dvr/pp_392247.html ($90 vs $40 - yay for self-enable-ment).

https://www.carcamcentral.com/guide/...-boxes-of-2016 was what changed my mind. The video is actually somewhat usable in night time unlike the G1WCB which is just about okay.

Since the cost was just outside my max budget (6000), I went ahead with it. I wasn't going to spend like 14-20k on the dashcam.

Its already been shipped via Netherlands post (within 16 hours of my order!). Now the waiting game starts!

I really like GB's approach of keeping an image of the actual package as it was shipped in their order site (which otherwise is no comparison to AliExpress or DX). Just *feels* a bit nicer.

Aesthetically, I prefer the small cube or rectangle shapes, but this looks like a good choice at a not-prohibitive price

It is available with GPS in the mount at a slightly higher price. That also has the advantage that the power connection is via the mount, so the cam is easier to take in and out. (Yes, I watched the review movie!). But the software is surely going to be windows, and I don't fancy it even in a VM (Not sure that the flood actually left me my XP disc and readable licence. Not sure stuff still works with XP any longer. Am sure that I'm not buying a new version of Windows!)
The A119 is an excellent choice in the sub $100 bracket. The manufacturer Viofo is receptive to customer suggestions and complaints and further firmware development is improving on the video quality at a very fast pace. Which can't be said about most of the Chinese manufacturers that don't stand behind their product once it is out in its retail version.

The A119 will keep getting improved for a long time, recently they released an improved firmware for the previous model, which has been around for at least 2 years or more.

They will also be releasing the A119s in 2-3 months which will come with the Sony IMX322 sensor, which perform much better than the current OV4689 in low light.

The biggest headache is, if the connection drops in-between, you cannot reconnect and the cam stuck in connection-acceptance mode. You cannot restart it as well. It stuck there until all the capacitor power is drowned, resetting the settings and date to initial configuration.
I'm using the cable to transfer the files now.

Just an update. There was a firmware update and the update for the app. After updating both, the transfer is smooth and very fast. For the 1 minute duration file size comes to around 97 MB and the transfer of one file completes in seconds.
Atleast this is what I bought the cam for and now I'm one satisfied customer.

Re: The Dashcam / Car Video Recorder (DVR) Thread

I just ordered a Dvr from Aliexpress - it was worth $31. This is my first buy on this site and my costliest purchase online from outside India. Will this attract customs duty? And when can I realistically expect delivery.

leave a note to the seller to mark the value on your package down to 5-8$. However it is not very consistent. My friend purchased a knife sharpener for 3$ and had to pay 250rs duty. I've made 40 or so purchases and so far have been lucky. My experience on delivery had been on average one month. Quickest has been under three weeks and slowest has been 3+ months.

Ask the seller to mention it as Gift item and not accessory. If mentioned as Gift they do not bother to charge for duty.

I have made over 78 orders till date with prices ranging from 0.89$ to $109 and never have been charged for custom duty. May be I'm lucky.

If you choose China Post - it is anywhere between 35-45 days. Hong Kong post is better off within 30 days. Faster options like DHL, Fedex, Aramex etc are great but too costly and sometimes exceed the actual item cost. And in case delivery doesn't happen under the stipulated period you 'can' claim refund.

Don't worry about the purchase, just message the seller to mention as gift. Sit back and wait for the package.

Thanks for the advice guys. I have messaged the seller the instructions - let's see what happens. I was worried because this seller did not have any feedback from Indian buyers and I assume he's not sent any packages to India yet.

I usually do all my purchases on ebay.com - over 50 items so far but nothing above $10, so no customs issues yet.

Even if the customs were to charge duty - what is the duty percentage?

Samspire

If your consignment is heldup at customs then they will calculate duty @ 33% of the value and in case of Seller do not include any Invoice then it is upto Customs how much they value the item and charge duty.

Re: The Dashcam / Car Video Recorder (DVR) Thread

A "DOD-LS-460W" is on the way. Ordered it from eBay in Aussie land and will be carried over to India by my brother who is travelling to India next month.

This cost me approx 219AUD

A query, will he have to pay a custom duty at the airport ?

Regards

hey iamswift thanks for that valuable piece of information. Just wanted to know how to firmware update is installed, does a back up of any sort need to be done prior doing the update, also is it over the air i.e on wifi or through the data cable after downloading on the PC.
Thanks in advance!

After downloading the firmware update file, (.bin file) you have to copy it under the "SYSTEM" folder in the microSD card. You can connect the cam to the PC or if you have card reader, you can take out the microSD card and attach it to PC to copy the file. (Note: You need mini USB cable if you attach the cam it to the PC).
Once copied, connect the cam back to the car and start it. The setup menu has the "Upgrade firmware" option. Selecting it will search the "SYSTEM" folder for the new firmware file and updates it automatically.

Thanks.
Hi,

No issues from custom, product reached safely. It worked well for few weeks and started having issues as it used to switch off frequently. Not sure whether the problem is with my car's electrical circuit (much older car) or with camera. I have not checked this yet. Will let you know if I could fix the problem. Overall I am neutral towards this product and its usability. Hope this helps.

Thanks

Re: The Dashcam / Car Video Recorder (DVR) Thread

Bought the Xiaomi YI Dash cam International Edition from Aliexpress.com
Got it for $70, which is a fair price for the features it offers. It was delivered within 15 days. No custom duty was charged, the seller has marked it as gift and valued it at $15.
I have not started using it yet, will start using it from this weekend.
