Re: The Dashcam / Car Video Recorder (DVR) Thread

I am looking at getting a dashcam for my Nano. Shortlisted this:
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Origi...451318411_6448

I am new to this. Should i tamper my wiring to provide power for the dashcam or i can use the 12v power socket and use it when needed?

I think you just missed the bus. Sad to see increased prices. I think the seller did that to increase his order count.

You can either power it through the 12V socket or hardwire it. Left to you. Tell you what, instead of paying more for the same camera, if you can wait, maybe someone can resell it to you since we have all brought in bulk quantities

Re: The Dashcam / Car Video Recorder (DVR) Thread

I ordered the GT 300 for 12 USD through Aliexpress on 16 Jan. Now waiting for delivery. No user manual I believe. Can someone send a link to a review of this product?

You should be getting a user manual.
Here is an unboxing of the camera:

Dont touch any wiring of the car. Get a 12 volt multi socket splitter if you need to charge your phone or any other device. I have one in my Thar that I bought from the US. Sorry dont have photos handy. Do search for "12v car charger socket" with either multiple 12 volt sockets or USB ports.

You are better off doing it from outside instead of going through MASS. I generally do the DIY's myself. If its too complex for me I get it done from the neighborhood car electrician. In Mumbai this particular work of hardwiring can happen for around 100 to 150 rupees (labor only).

I bet most of the orders are being shipped to India.

Same here. Mine has been shipped today. Lets hope it reaches quickly and without any customs hassles. Finally the product should work!

After 6 minutes of recording (720p@50fps, medium bitrate) it would freeze up. There would be no further recording or response to button presses and the only solution was to remove the battery and reset.

Anyway, after eliminating various likely causes (tried using different settings, multiple SD cards of different capacity and class, power supplies etc.) I figured it was a firmware issue. By now Aliexpress purchase protection had ended so getting a replacement was ruled out. Luckily the supplier was co-operative and provided me with a link to a newer firmware version. Post upgrade it now seems to work. I'll post some pics and video after further testing.
Thought I'd post a follow-up with a sample video to show the camera in action. The raw footage looks a lot better than the YouTube version. This was shot in 1080p@25fps, but the camera also supports two other video modes - 720p@25fps and 720p@50fps. There are also three bitrate levels - high, medium and low. High means less compression and low means more compression. There is also a choice between PAL/NTSC. Some of the key features are:

* 170 FoV (or so they claim - not really tested this). The field of view is higher when shooting in 720p and slightly lower in 1080p

* Provision for external mic (audio in 2.5mm jack) and HDMI out. The second option is good if you want to do some live streaming for example

* Shoots still images in three modes - burst (rapid fire 30 pictures), every 30s or every 2min. Havent tested these out yet

* Comes with a good selection of mounting accessories and a waterproof enclosure as well.

Here's a link to a professional review

By default the camera comes with a cigarette lighter attachment for powering up. Its hardwiring that will take time and effort. If you are finding either things hard, I can do it for you if you stay somewhere close by or you are willing to come to where I stay

Did you order a hard wire kit and fuse tap separately?I didn't see a separate option for that. If so, please send me the link. Thanks.

I know for sure I will find it hard to do so I am wondering if you could do a mini DYI session for few of us once we all receive the product, which I expect to be around the same time?

My pleasure. But we should come to a common understanding on what is to be done.

Maybe we all can get together in a place and I can help you guys out.

If anyone wants fuse taps, we can order them together by this evening or tomorrow. We can create our own hardwire setup without a separate kit. Just a fuse tap and some soldering skills is needed which I am willing to help for a few people. Funny thing how the hard wire kit and the fuse tap costs more than the camera itself

Can this be bought in India? Its bad enough ordering one item on AliExpress - its much worse to order three - any one can hold the installation up.
