Re: The Dashcam / Car Video Recorder (DVR) Thread

I recently got a Transcend Drive Pro 100 for my car. It costs INR 9000/- at Amazon.in and comes with a Wind Screen suction mount and a 16 GB Card. I have been using it for a while and found the unit to be sturdy, and the quality of recording to be good. When viewing the video on a laptop, the images tend to get blurred once in a while, but overall the quality is nice.
My Dashcam tends to go into Emergency Mode (the mode where videos cannot be deleted, but they will be over-written, in case max capacity is reached), soon after starting the car and traveling for a few minutes. Initially I thought this as an irritant, and was contemplating to return the Dash cam, but am OK with it now.
You would need to keep the unit plugged in to the 12 V socket. Its does have a battery backup for a minute or so, to record footage in case of an emergency..

Here is a 3-minute video of footage from the dash cam in broad light:

(I am trying to get the audio in the footage removed - please mute, in case your find the audio distracting)
This is not WI-FI enabled, nor does it have BlueTooth so you would need to attach a transfer cable to transfer the videos to your computer, or have a card reader read the micro SD. Otherwise, this is a sturdy unit, and I believe, it will do what it is supposed to do best - record videos, continuously without breaking a sweat.

Reviewing DOD-IS 200W Dashcam by DOD Tech
Website: www.dashcamera.co.in
Resolution: 1080p, 720p and 480p
Supported Card: Upto 32 Gb (Class 10 card is recommended)
File Sizes: 1080p (345 Mb), 720p (146 Mb) and 480p (94 Mb)
Camera Features: Please visit company website: http://dashcamera.co.in/products/dod/is200w/
Availability: Available on Amazon India

I was planning to do a long trip (Hyd-Nashik-Pune-Hyd) during Diwali (Nov-2015) and wanted to record the entire journey using Dashcam. Searched a lot and zeroed in on DOD IS 200W.

Experience:
Excellent dashcam, very small in size and excellent picture quality in all 3 modes (1080p, 720p and 480p). Sample videos can be viewed @
1080p:
720p:
480p:

The camera comes with windshield mount which is very easy to use and can be removed (if required) without much trouble.

Without second thought I can recommend this DOD IS 200W to anyone looking for a reliable dashcam that works like a charm.

Technical Support:
The company has an excellent technical support and the queries via gmail were answered almost instantly like we are chatting with the tech support team.

Addendum: The file size I mentioned are for 3 Min Videos.

Re: The Dashcam / Car Video Recorder (DVR) Thread

I brought a dashcam from aliexpress last month. It costed around 22$ including shipping and I am pretty satisified with the quality it offered for the price. The only issue I am facing now is the 1080p video seems a bit choppy at some short sections. I suspect it is more of a memory card issue since the camera records really huge files and the card(Strontium class 10 32GB) is not able to take the write load.
In short,
Pros:
  • Cheap price
  • Quality is good
  • Clarity and field of view is good
  • Provides complete functionality - G sensor, auto start stop, various resolution options, time overlay
Cons:
  • File size is too big, say 3 minutes of a 720p video take ~400MB\
  • Video gets choppy at few places
  • Battery backup is just enough to save the recording and shut down.
Here is a video I compiled out of the cam. The original video clips aare clearer since this is a highly compressed video.

Can you give me a link to the product. One of my colleagues is interested to buya dashcam but doesn't want to spend too much. This looks impressive

Class10 should be able to take this load easily. I suspect it is the formatting type.
Make sure you do not have any of the below issues

All these caused dropped framed.
You will not have issue number 2 because Class10 is 10MBps and most probably your card will also be MLC

Here is a video I compiled out of the cam.
I watched it at 720p and it is quite good I must say. I could see the number plates of all the vehicles.
However I felt the view angle to be less. is it 120degrees?

3 minutes at 1080p consumes around 300MB in my DOD camera

Questions:
Is this timelapse function available in the device itself or did you use some other software?
Does it support 64GB card?
Is that a WagonR?

24kms from your apartment in Bangalore south till your office in Whitefield and you did it is 47 minutes.
That's impressive! Maybe that's because you leave so early in the day.
Can you also post the return drive video so that the night time performance can be gauged?

OT:
If my guess is right about your company of work...this camera quite doesn't match its slogan of 'Best or nothing' does it?

Quite a bunch of questions

Its the Novatek dashcam available here: http://www.aliexpress.com/item/GT500...912105887.html

I really dont know why I wanted a dashcam especially when people questioned me, but I wanted to give a try and hence did not invest much. There are cheaper options available, but this was the one with good reviews on youtube and had lots of orders. Hence brought this one.

I will try it on a better rated card and check if that solves the problem. Anyways its not much of a hindrance to me. Thinking of the Samsung EVO or Strontium Nitro stuff.

View angle is stated to be 170 degrees but I dont have an idea how this should be verified. Most of the number plates are clear except for the extreme edges which are distorted which means I can catch a lot of offenders and report them to BTP. It covers the entire front region of the car and I guess something like 150 deg should be the actual number.

Nope. Used a video editor and increased the clip speed to 6-8 times depending upon the situation

No, it can support upto 32GB only which I think is one drawback.

Yes it is a WagonR.

Nice observation. Yes, though we dont have fixed timings at work, I make it a point to leave early and reach back early. Now that I dont go via KR Puram in the mornings, I do the morning commute to whitefield in 40 minutes.

I return home usually before dark so my return commute will also be bright lol. I will post some other picture or wait, a video that I had posted earlier in another thread.:

Well well well

That is the product that my company manufactures, not the product that I use, else why would I be driving a wagonR of all the cars

But frankly, I have to appreciate the kind of info you have extracted from that five minute piece of video. Really impressive eye you ve got there.

I too don't think this is 170degrees. Place a sheet with angles marked on it in front of the camera and you should be able to the angle of view

Hi

Am guessing they ship this to India, how long does it take to arrive please? I was also planning to pick one up and guessing it would fit snugly inside my K10 if it has fitted inside your waggy

thanks

Yes they do ship to India, pretty much with most orders on Aliexpress. I chose Sweden post as shipping option and it reached me in a month or a day or two lesser than that. Fitting isn't specific to car and you can refer to the hardwiring dashcam thread to get an idea of my installation. It's located right ahead of IRVM and doesnt hinder my view of the road ahead.

Hi Audioholic
I did as well buy the same model and it seems to work pretty good for the price I paid (got a 50% refund on $22 as I thought it looked too flimsy than it looked in the pics and that night vision was a joke). But after watching a few other model reviews like blaupunkt I felt it is doing the job for the price.
I too drive from JP Nagar to white field and it consumes close to 10gb over 2 hours in traffic. I need to switch to 32gb.
I might pick another one for my K10 amt. Today I see the price at 19 $ on aliexpress.

My dual dashcam requires minimum 14mbps writing speed since there are two HD cameras, front and rear.

So a MLC, class 10, U-3 sdxc card is having no issues at all. And the latest firmware automatically formats ex-FAT.

Dear BHPian PVS,

You have mentioned that Drivepro 100 is recording the videos in Emergency mode sometimes. I have experienced the same too.

You can keep the G-Sensor minimum / OFF to stop it from happening. A moderate jerk in the car while negotiating a pothole / speed breaker makes it start recording in emergency mode if G-sensor is kept on.

Hope this helps

Regards Arun

Re: The Dashcam / Car Video Recorder (DVR) Thread

I picked up a TCL SVC200 during the Black Friday sale on Aliexpress last week. (picture courtesy Amazon). It's not strictly a dashcam - more of an action camera, but does come with a windshield mount and can be used as a dashcam. I checked out some reviews before buying and they seemed overall positive. Original price was $118.00, I got it for $39.00. Of course being Aliexpress there's no telling when it will arrive but fingers crossed.
