For the speakers given your taste in music I would recommend something like Infinity Reference, Morel Tempo and maybe Focal's Polyglass.

I know the Fiests has 5x7" openings but I believe youcan fit 6" components in the space provided. See Frank Mehta's Fiesta install below. Frank used Alpine's 17 cm woofers.
Thanks Navin,
I have budgeted 8k - 10K for the dampening, HU adapter & dash kit.

Frank's thread is where I started from and I must say there is lot of learning. I'm sure the thread still has lot of info for me & his Civic thread has put me in a dilemma of Dynamat vs. Noisekill on cost perspective.

I liked the Focals but the cost reference from ebay doesn't help on deciding. I'll check with the dealers here. I still have to check out the Infinity & the Morel (now on priority) along with the other brands.

Oh, and my current settings are Hi = +10, mid = +5, low =+2, sub at center, fader one more towards rear and DSO 2 + Xplod preset equalizer. I will change the settings tomorrow.

I play music only till volume 20, and hope i haven't done any damage to the speakers especially the kicker bass tube?

Should I enable preset equalizers and other sound enhancing features like DSO/BBE?

Sounds quite good but no harm in trying to haggle it down a little more since in another month the model will be obsolete :P

The MS8 will auto tune the response but does not allow you to override these settings. The same is true for the Alpine and RF processors. Audison's bit 1 and bit 10 however allow you to tune the sound to your liking.

I have not used the Helix so cannot coment about it.

Re: Car Audio Advice from the Audio Gurus: Use "Search thread" before posting a new Q

cleaning up the electrical system in the ol'GYpsy with all new wiring e.t.c. While I am at it, ripping out all the Carputer/Tab jhingtang as well. I figure my android phone will give me all the computing power I need while touring: but i need a nice sounding audio setup with reliable electricals: especially with a long haul tour coming up.

So here is the setup planned:

HU - Pioneer FH-X759BT 2DIN HU with BT
AMP - JBL GTS-S644 800W 4-channel (S646 - equivalent)
FRONT - JBL GTO-609C 6" 2-way component System
REAR - JBL GTO-949, 400W 6x9 CoAxial Full Range Speakers - MDFBox mounted

The GTS-S644 AMP retained from the old carputer install. The Front and Rear speakers are all new.

Also purchased the Pioneer X759BT: it was the cheapest 2DIN Bluetooth enabled (hence future proof) I could find. 2DIN because I need to fill a hole in the dashboard formerly occupied by a Tablet. I am doing the wiring myself early tomorrow. Would appreciate some help!

In the previous install, the amp was wired up to the stereo out of the Tab-Dock. A splitter was put at the amp end to split 2ch to 4ch for the amp. The Remote-On of the amp was taken from a tap into the ACC wire behind the dashboard so it was on whenever the car was turned on. There was a recurring problem with a strange low-intensity humming sound coming from the speakers when the carputer was turned off. To get an idea of the sound I am talking about remove the speaker-in cable from your laptop and touch the tip with your finger. It was something like that except on a much lower intensity. Fellow tbhpians who have seen the problem first hand said there was a "ground loop" somewhere. How do we ensure that this problem doesnt recur?

Here is my plan for the wiring:
1. Power Cable from Batt to Amp retained in current position drawn through left door panels.
2. The stereo cable used earlier was drawn from the same side as the power cable in earlier setup: i understand after watching some installs on youtube, that this should be avoided: hence routing the 4 RCA cables drawn from behind HU to Amp from the opposite (right) side of the Gypsy (through door panels). The remote switch wire from dash to amp will also be drawn tagged onto this loom.
3. The 4 RCA cables plug into the 4 RCA pre-out sockets F-R, F-L, R-R and R-L on the HU. The speaker connections on the HU Socket will be taped off. On the socket the 12v pwr cable, the ACC wire will be connected to existing wires drawn from fusebox, and the Remote On wire will be tapped. So only 4 of the 18-points on the socket will be used, the rest taped off.

on the right track?

Won't recur with the 2DIN HU. With the tab, there was no grounding of the RCA shield at either end, hence the 'power line' pick up (the 'brrrrrrrr' sound). With the 2DIN HU, the RCA socket outer shell is expected be connected to ground. If it isn't (Pio HUs are notorious), simply wire a length of copper wire around all the sockets and connect to the nearest HU cabinet screw.

* Why through the door panel??? Or did you mean below the 'sill'?

* Use a Harness Adapter for Gypsy - will solve a lot of problems, and it costs <200

Re: Car Audio Advice from the Audio Gurus: Use "Search thread" before posting a new Q

Thinking of upgrading the ICE on my S10.

Currently I have a Kenwood U6046 with Rockford Fosgate 6.5inch compos and 6x9 coaxials in the back.

Initially had an idea of putting in a 4 channel amp, later upgrade the speakers. Was considering the Mosconi 120.4. later changed the plan, want to get a good 2 channel amp since I would be alone driving the car whenever I'm listening to music.

Right now, here are my options:

1. Put in an 2 channel amp. (budget 10K)
2. Put in a 2 channel amp + better components ? (Max 15K for components if I'm upgrading)
3. Put in a 2 channel amp + upgrade HU which plays WAV files (Have 800GB of FLACs with me and use a Sansa Fuze with 64GB microSDXC card)
4. Put in a 4 channel amp, do away with the head unit, use the Fuze to play songs
5. Put in a 4 channel amp, get a cheap android tablet with an external DAC (I have an Objective DAC on my desktop which I really like)

My Desktop setup is Zero DAC/ODAC, Lyrita lync tube pre amp ( use it with headphones), an EL84 tube amp ( headphones/speakers) and ProAc Tablette 2 speakers. Portable setup consists of a Sansa Fuze with a 64GB card and only FLACs with a Fiio E6 for amp and Ultimate Ears Triple.Fi 10.

I listen predominantly to old english songs (Queen, Alan Parsons Project, Dire Straits, Rush, Bee Gees, Boney M, ABBA, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Fleetwood mac, Carpenters, etc) alongwith old trance by ATB, PVD, etc.

Please help me decide!

Answers in-line. With the desktop etc. setup you have, wonder why you are thinking of amplifying only the front components, and not the 6x9s.

Re: Car Audio Advice from the Audio Gurus: Use "Search thread" before posting a new Q

I have a very spartan audio setup in my 2004 wagon r : Basic pioneer single din HU, the cheapest 4" jbl components and JBL GTO 949 coaxials in the rear which are paced in MDF boxes that move around all over the place :/
I've got a bunch of questions:
1. which is a good set of 4" components for the front?
2. would having a fiberglass mold to mount the rear speakers on the rear quarter glasses be advisable?
3. Is scosche the best wiring around?
4. could I have a list of good 4 channel amps on a budget to drive all four speakers
5. With a decent 4 channel amp, my sound will improve, yes? But would it make any difference if I also had a better HU? Or will that be rendered pointless in terms of sound quality as long as there is an amp driving the speakers?

Re: Car Audio Advice from the Audio Gurus: Use "Search thread" before posting a new Q

I was quoted 7.2k for a set of front Kicker components (6.5" - don't know model no.) and around the same for Focal Access series. Also 5.2k for Pioneer 3490UB.
Without going for an amp right now, will this provide decent sound clarity up front and are these prices o.k? To this I will add some 6x9 at the back.

Didn't find any other components? Infinity? Polk? Auditor? Boston? Nothing? Considering the ones you listed are no better than the ones which go for ~6K, perhaps you should cast your net wider. And please make sure you get an audition - believe only your own ears.

Sure, components and 6x9 driven from HU will give a decent system.

Re: Car Audio Advice from the Audio Gurus: Use "Search thread" before posting a new Q

Hi Friends,

I am not much of a audiophile, but I definitely like listening to good music while driving. Some times at high volumes and some times just some soft soothing music. So far I have a Fabia with a stock setup and was quite happy with the setup of the default music system in it.
But recently I was gifted awesome headphones (Bose AE02) by my wife who really loves listening to music. And What a difference it made to the whole "listening to music" concept.
The sound system in my Fabia, doesn't feel adequate anymore !!

Add to it the fact that My wife and I travel (long distances as well ) quite a bit by car. And over a period of time, I have been pondering over the Idea of getting a good ICE setup for my car.

The Fabia, is soon to be sold, and I am looking at buying a Safari in a couple of months time. And plan to invest in a good ICE setup. Would be looking at Safari VX or GX. So headrest mounted screens would be present already.

I have been searching a lot of threads here to try and make up my mind for a good setup. However, each time I visit a thread I end up being more confused. And my illiteracy of the ICE terms make the task even more difficult. (trust me I have tried a lot, it just doesn't register! )

I would really be grateful if I can get suggestions about a good ICE setup for a safari.
Most of the times I only listen to Hindi songs.

Requirements would be A good HU Front and Rear speakers, plus a sub., tweeters and a good amplifier that can help support the setup.

Also I would be using the car mostly as a 5 seater, so a bit of compromise in the boot space is OK

My budget would be around 25-30K (all inclusive) + cost of a suitable damping for the entire setup. Would be looking at Bluetooth and Ipod connectivity as a priority.

Would also be interested in knowing average costs in setting up a carputer, and would the effects be equivalent to a good HU? If feasible a carputer would be a more preferred option for me. And do not mind spending a bit extra for it, say in the range of 30-45 (all inclusive) + Cost of suitable damping. And I believe we can setup BT and Ipod connectivity in the carputers as well?

(making the comment at the risk of sounding dumb ) But I would like to have the overall sound effect as that of my headphones plus a slightly punchier bass. Is is possible to get a setup with this kind of output in the desired price range ?

I doubt you will be able to achieve the sound you are hoping for with that budget. At that price you will be able to get an ICE installed. One that is powerful, loud, bassy but not very accurate and might fall short of your expectations.
Meanwhile are you sure about a used Safari? Maintenance costs and reliability might be an issue. Just saying. I'm sure you must have considered those facts already
