Re: Car Audio Advice from the Audio Gurus: Use "Search thread" before posting a new Q

I've again done some research and until anyone can suggest a model from rainbow, I think I will stick to Focal Audio. The only trouble I have is deciding between the Focal Access 165 A3 and the Focal K2 Power 165KR I know the Power series is many steps above the Access series but the 165 A3 is a 3-way component set while the 165KR is 2-way I need help understanding the differences and whether even if the 165KR is a 2-way set, it is way better sounding than the 165 A3.
While checking out subwoofers, I also stubled upon active and passive subwoofers. I understand that active ones have an inbuilt amp? Does this mean I do not have to buy a monoblock amp for the entire setup and will it still sound as good? If so, then could anyone suggest a subwoofer that isn't too high-end but still sounds good? Maybe about 10-15k assuming that would be enough.

yet another noob ICE question

Hi,

I'm looking to get a new set of speakers for my 2005 Honda City Gxi . I listen mainly to rock and metal . The stock speakers in my car however don't seem good anymore . I went to an audio store with a friend and was interested in getting JBL stuff because I knew they sounded good in a friend's car . These were the items which the shopkeeper suggested from the JBL line up . Please suggest if these are good enough .

Component - JBL GTO-609c
3-way speakers - JBL GTO-949
Amp- JBL GT-X646
Sub- JBL GT-X1250T/1150T

Another brand I am interested in checking out is Rockford Fosgate . Are they comparable with JBL ? If yes any particular models I should ask for ? Sorry I have so many questions at the same time . Thanks in advance for the replies .

Regards,
Balaji

Rockford Fosgate might provide better amp and subwoofer

Have you also given any thought to Infinity Reference6530cs? They might sound more lively paired with a decent amp

^^+1 to it. The infinity's would sound better. Slightly higher price from the jbl's but it would be better if you go for infinity components and coaxial. Rest all is great.
Why not audition them and then listen to your heart !

You might also want to consider focal access a1 for about 6000 I believe they will offer the best sound in that segment

Actually as far as co-axials are concerned I think he ought to stick to the jbl gto 949 they really are one of the most impressive coaxials around and you cannot go wrong with them

I am not saying gto 949 is not good. I find the infinity more crisp while 949 a bit bright. I ve heard similar reviews from other people as well.
To each his own.
He should decide what he feels best to his ears.
Be it 949 or access or anyother.

True that! personally I would suggest the focal 165 a1 or infinity ref components up front and the jbl gto 949 s in the rear but then in the end it is up to him to decide what sound he wants

Meanwhile will someone please help me decide what subwoofer to go for? active or passive? whats the difference? recommended models? pricing? I cant wait to get my ICE upgraded the Kizashi does have a pretty impressive kit for an OEM but well you all know how it is :P

Thanks k2max6 and ishaanian for your replies ,

I have heard they JBL stuff and they sounded good . Will check out the Infinity and Focal speakers this weekend . Any other recommended brands I should check out ? Forgive another newbie question but are there any rock/metal specific speakers I should be aware of ? Could anyone also tell me which models of Rockford Fosgate I should ask about ?

Thanks,
Balaji

If your focus is on rock then I suppose the JBLs would suit you just fine you might still want to give the focals a try though. I would not recommend any Rockford components at that price maybe just their subs I am not sure about model names just ask around and you'll find out which sub you can get with your budget

The sub I've pretty much decided on the JBL GT1150/1250 because a tube would be easier to install and occupy less space than a conventional sub . From what I've been told a tube provides clearer (but less louder) bass than a normal sub . I repeat again I'm clueless about ICE . I will definitely check out the focals .

Thanks,
Balaji

I have heard the same advantages of a tube over the conventional sealed type could anyone else confirm this? Would a ported sub enclosure be better? Also which monoblock and 4ch. amps have you shortlisted so far? I am pretty clueless about ICE too :P just sharing whatever I know from a little research and interaction

its the reverse. tubes are louder, but more bloated than an equivalent boxed sub

So what are the advantages of a tube then? I am looking at upgrading my ICE too...so would you recommend a ported sub-enclosure with a 12" or a tube? Also I have been asking this for a while now and here I go again: will an active sub be better than a passive one hooked up with a monoblock amp? If so I would like to know how much an active sub costs and if not could someone please recommend a good sub and monoblock amp please?
