Re: MG Motors to launch an EV at Rs 10 to 15 lakh by end of next fiscal. EDIT: Named Comet EV

Looking forward to this.

If this small EV is priced and packaged as per expectations, MG has the potential to make the upcoming Tata Punch EV look like exceptional value for money, Kudos!

While I absolutely agree that the small footprint of the vehicle would be a lifesaver in the city traffic, can't shake off its resemblance to Bajaj Qute, and imagine the image-issues deterring potential buyers. https://www.bajajauto.com/three-wheelers/qute

Just my take on (expected) Ex-showroom pricing (INR):

4-7L - Can find some takers
7-9L - Still a stretch for those takers
>9L - High chance of failure

I would be glad to be proven wrong by the market.

I would expect it to be in 10L range considering the tech that goes with it. Also, if below 9L, it would be deemed as a cheap transport like the Chinese 2 wheeler import EVs.

I understand the rationale for a low price but too low a price could also be a bad thing.

I believe a high(er) price with a rich set of features would give it some decent volume as a 2nd (or 3rd) car for a family for city duties.

Re: MG Motors to launch an EV at Rs 10 to 15 lakh by end of next fiscal. EDIT: Named Comet EV

For a car positioned as premium, the lack of basic features is disappointing (as per leaked brochure)
1. No ACC (manual ac)
2. No Alloy wheels
3. Only two speakers
4. Drum brakes at rear.

Re: MG Motors to launch an EV at Rs 10 to 15 lakh by end of next fiscal. EDIT: Named Comet EV

Below leaked specs do not look premium by any standard. With all these specs, there is no novelty to purchase a 2-door Chinese EV over other market options. Personally, I may consider it if its below Tiago in pricing. Any thing above 8L, and I will just prefer Tiago.ev

  • Fabric Seats
  • Drum brakes
  • R12 steel wheels
  • 145 width tires
  • Small battery pack
  • Main-stream Power & Torque specs. Its not a fun-to-drive car
  • Manual AC
  • MG is a Mass market brand. Its no Mini etc to charge a premium.

Re: MG Motors to launch an EV at Rs 10 to 15 lakh by end of next fiscal. EDIT: Named Comet EV

I cannot see this doing more than 100 units a month and that too on a good month. This will end up being a niche and halo product, doing more to further uplift MG's image. People will walk into showrooms and be wowed by the new ageness of its interiors.

Biggest hindrances are the overall size and the wheels which will result in a bumpy city ride over anything but absolutely smooth tarmac.

For someone who's not rushing to be an early adopter or wanting to try something new, it'll be very difficult to ignore the Tiago EV

Re: MG Motors to launch an EV at Rs 10 to 15 lakh by end of next fiscal. EDIT: Named Comet EV

I kept saying this from the beginning, anything above 7 lakh, this will only be a 'showcase' car. And now knowing the features, it also seems to be MG's belief that even if it marginally gets close to Tiago pricing, it will only help Tata. But if it is priced between 5 & 7 lakh, this is an exciting city car! I don't buy into this theory of pricing it higher to attract second car buyers - it's bizarre! Smartness is in paying for what it's worth, not for how people around you perceive it.

Re: MG Motors to launch an EV at Rs 10 to 15 lakh by end of next fiscal. EDIT: Named Comet EV

With only 3.3 kw speed charging, it would be a very impractical car even for city purposes. It would take a very predictable usage patterns to use this car. Wonder why MG wouldn't give Fast Charging, even with 15 KW speed would have done. Even if they wanted to limit to AC charging they should have given 7.2 KW option

One thing to understand here is that for a city car, a small top-up is enough to get done with most drives. I would expect that slow charging the Comet for an hour will let you drive at least 35-40KM - that is enough for most use-cases within the city. I would prefer a fast charger only for long distance travel. Having driven a Tigor EV for over 20,000 KM (including 140 km round trips), I only used a fast-charger twice.

Re: MG Motors to launch an EV at Rs 10 to 15 lakh by end of next fiscal. EDIT: Named Comet EV

Availability of Fast charging gives the users a comfort that they have options to do quick charge in emergency situations. Most users are currently not adopting EVs because of this anxiety about what happens when they run out of charge. If Tiago at same price range gives the user that comfort, obviously Comet will be compared with that.

It they position it even at par with Tiago EV (which is very unlikely), it's gonna be a hard sell. This one is DOA.

Re: MG Motors to launch an EV at Rs 10 to 15 lakh by end of next fiscal. EDIT: Named Comet EV

I think there is a crowd that perceives MG as premium, it may be mass market elsewhere but I can see a lot of urban users not comfortable with being seen in a TATA Tiago EV being completely comfortable with this little one. It seems aspirational, cool and also further the perception that you are ecofriendly. Even at 10 lakhs, I know a bunch of well-paid urban, young corporates may want something like this. Not everyone wants a brawny SUV to look cool, some may want something like this to stand-out too. Yes, it still is a niche but one that could very well work for MG, especially if you are somebody who already has an SUV or a big sedan other use-cases at home.

Standsout - YES
Small foot print - YES
Easy to drive - YES
Fits 2 (for office/weekend shopping) - YES
Not A Tata or Mahindra EV (which may perceived more as a economical purchase than ecofriendly) - YES
