@mobike i am guessing the left one was taken with shade and the right one with auto in WB. i like the left one better because the setting is apt for the lighting.

@mayavi- some questions if you dont mind

would it have been better if you'd moved slightly to your right while taking the pic? the tree's branches would not have obscured the waterfall.

was it an automatic cam?

this would have been a difficult shot for me, because of the dark surroundings and the angle by which the tree canopy lets the light in.

my solution for the lighting would have been, turning the ISO way down, and increasing the exposure a little. would that have worked?

also- would it be possible to bring out all the beauty better with HDR?

I have faced similar scenes before and stood helpless.I do not want to miss anymore chances, hence the questions.

Thanks for your post rippergeo. I am still learning composition. In this picture my focus was on the bridge and intended the waterfall to be at the end. Didn't pay attention to the tree that is blocking the falls. Now that you mentioned it, I regret not paying attention.

This was shot with a DSLR in Aperture Priority mode. It looks dark because I played around with Curves in PS to give it that darker look, to which I have an affinity. The original settings were 400 ISO 1/50 s at wide open. I actually added negative exposure compensation when converting from RAW format and further increased the contrast in PS. The actual conditions were overcast and slightly drizzling and the lighting was pretty even. I would probably have shot it with different settings if I had a tripod or if I knew how to shoot HDR.

I like darker pictures too.
ISO of 200 might have made it better, maybe?
@gkrishn- exposure compensation can be set on the camera itself, even on point and shoots. the N73 has the option. so did my old kodak point and shoot.

I'm useless at photoshop,so have to play with the camera itself.

I did try HDR recently- once, results were good, but I'm too lazy to keep trying. its not difficult, just cumbersome.

The real problem in this shot is the F-Stop, you have used maximum aperture to compensate for lack of light. Ideally you should have set it to F8 or F11 and used a tripod. Can't fix this in PS.

To be frank, I don't really know what the problem is here. Are you guys talking about image quality or bad exposure or both? I feel something is wrong with this image but can't really place it. As for image quality, the original image after Jpeg conversion is around 4 MB while the attached one is <500 KB, so there is loss of quality.

Added later: I just noticed that in my previous post I mentioned I shot it at wide open. It was actually shot at 5.6 which kinda enters the sweet spot for Kit lens though not as good as f8.
