Looks like the seller is indeed trying to make a bit extra then. I just called up my HW/SW guy and he quoted 500/- for KIS 2009 (3 licenses) too.

Read BBC news of government PC's in UK/USA becoming infected with botnet in spite of high level of security and firewalls.
Are you really sure you ar protected when running the most populous operating system? And that when vendors try charging you ridiculous prices? Can you be secure at that price?
IMHO all anti-virus products work on ante-detection basis and so will always suffer a gap in protecting you.

For Windows Vista I use Avast.
I also use Linux (Ubuntu). I don't use any AV even though there are some available. Not really required.

AVAST is free and should provide basic protection against virus. You should have a Firewall - the basic Windows firewall is not enough. I use a Linux box as the router, firewall and network file server. It keeps things under control at all times. We run a dozen computer off this Network file Server. Never had any issues with malevolent bots or any hacking attempts.

I bought KIS 2009 3 User edition for 650/- from SP Road. This came in an extremely well packaged box with holographic seals etc.

They also showed me a regular DVD boxed one for 450 - which they claimed was a hacked one. I found that quite self defeating and bought the former!

Three reasons...

1. The 2010 retail packs are not out in India yet - what is available in the market are all 2009 versions. On line it retails for $59 US!

2. Reports that 2010 is buggy - esp some problem with streaming video and such. Lots of users have reverted back to 2009 pending updates/fixes from Kaspersky.

3. The same license can be used in any case! (KIS ONLY) Hence I'll upgrade a month or two down the line - after the the bugfixes are out and whetted!

i have been using ESET smart security(a.k.a Internet security) since 2 years on laptop. not much of a problem. does the task of keeping attacks at bay.

i use to have kaspersky before, but was too heavy on system. so got rid of it. my desktop though still has kaspersky.

I use only the free Norton utility downloaded from Google. As my OS is Wndows Vista Home, I additionally have the Widows Defender and Windows Firewall turned on.

Had Avira earlier, but started getting frequent incompatibility alerts after my os was updated to service pack 1.

none of the internet security softwares detect 100% of the known and unknown with many of them out with false positives just to scare us and sell their product. So its a touch choice. Also, I dont like to pay for these.

What I do is, shuffle between, trial versions of norton IS 2009 (much improved now), mcafee IS (slow on sys), Kaspersky IS and Trend Micro IS ( slow on sys ) and after the cycle , format my HDD ( this ensure that my lappy is in peak form) and start with the cycle of trial softwares

i have a mac . I havent used any anti-spyware, anti-virus program since day 1. Why you ask? Because viruses for OSX dont exist..and you have to be pretty dumb to let an unauthorized program to gain access.
