re: The Desktop Computer & Configuration Thread

Looking for a desktop monitor to enable office like setup at home. Size should be > 24" since my work involves more on Excel and Word. So the more real estate, more the ease of productivity.

Inclined towards LGs ultrawide and Samsung's curved monitor. Any suggestions?

Note: Monitor would be connected to my Dell laptop using HDMI.

The price the delta between a good 22" Monitor and 24"+ monitor is a lot. IMHO, there is not a lot you loose between a 22" & 24" inch screen if your use case if excel + word. I was in a similar dilemma last week as I was looking for a 24"+ montior and ended up buying a 22" after physically examining a few 24" and 22" monitors. These were not display pieces but actually working pieces where I played around with various office apps + some code.

Hence if your use is for office work, I think a good IPS 22" inch like this should be enough and you can pocket the 7-10K that you would save.

Its not just one excel and word but many. Frequent Alt+Tab is being used and with a wide monitor, can place the referring excels in the right/left area and reduce the clicks.

Used to have dual monitor setup at office and hence got used to it

See if your computer supports multiple monitors. I use 3 24" ones with my Desktop machine. Multiple monitors beat large high resolutions ones if you use them for multiple applications. A single monitor makes sense only where you need one large space for single application - CAD, Satellite imagery etc.

Here is my setup

Even I have similar monitor (LG 24MP58VQ-P), though I got it for 8K when they had a mega sale. My other two monitors are six years+ LG 1980x1200. This resolution is rarely available now adays, outside professional (extremely costly) realm.

Windows supports multiple Monitors. Check your Laptop manual if simultaneous Screen, DVI and HDMI displays can be run. Normally with older Laptops Screen + 1 External Monitor was supported at hardware level. With DVI and HDMI multiple monitors may be possible.

I know that with Apple Thunderbolt at least 4 monitors are supported.

One option is to use :
  1. Ultrawide monitor AND
  2. Software that splits the display into virtual desktops (E.g.: DisplayFusion Pro for $30, or other Free tools)
With this, you can use the whole width of monitor when working on Excel files with hundreds of columns (or Video editing with timeline view).

Or, you can split the screen into two monitors side-by-side so that when maximized, Excel/Chrome etc use only half of the width.

re: The Desktop Computer & Configuration Thread

If multiple monitors are supported in hardware then 3 monitors are cheaper that one comparable ultra wide monitor, and you get more real estate to boot.

The one you suggested is LCD, whereas this is LED. 21.5" though, but costs the same.

LED is better, no?

One problem with multiple monitors is the bezel. This does not affect if windows are fullscreen, but if you want to span same window across monitors (say Excel with 100 columns) this becomes an issue.

re: The Desktop Computer & Configuration Thread

The LGs 25" ultrawide monitor does have a feature called "Screen Split 2.0" which resizes and display multiple windows at once, with 14 options including four different picture-in-picture (PIP) choices.

Did demo the curved monitors from Samsung, but it looks like a curved monitor only from 27". With the cheaper 24", it is visible only when viewed from the side.

Any specs/item which can be bettered? Is price competitive?
Please advise!

It is price competitive. The CPU should be able to handle any IT Pro load you have. The RAM should be sufficient to test out multiple VMs in parallel. The Storage is super fast and you'll never be bottlenecked by it. But if you don't need(not want) so much storage, I'd advise you go for lesser capacity and reduce costs. Also, if you're not into designing you won't need the 4k screen in a 15" laptop because as it is, Display Scaling on Windows is still not optimized and you'll find text hard to read. If possible, opt for the 1080p panel, which is a solid performer and will also give you improved battery life, while again resulting in savings.

And with those savings, opt for Dell's ProSupport Plus warranty that includes Accidental Damage. This will give you peace of mind for a long time to come (max 5 years) and you will be able to work without worry. And if you have money left over, invest in an SSD-based external drive.

Cheers and good luck!

re: The Desktop Computer & Configuration Thread

Is there any company that lets you configure laptops - like how Dell used to allow long back?
I want a laptop i5 HQ series, lot of ram and at least 512 ssd. I do NOT need high end graphics although some sort of dedicated graphics is a requirement. the per-configured options with lot of ram and large ssd are only with i7 HQ and very high end graphics (mostly gaming laptops), causing the prices to shoot up beyond my budget.
Any suggestions?
