Ok, I did not know the guards do not come with the standard version.

Thanks jkrishnakj. It might sound like beating my own drums, but after seeing online drone videos I am quite impressed with the videos that we took without having any prior experience. I think playing video games, specially with consoles, helps a lot in quickly adapting to the drone controller.

Regarding airports, I have no idea on how drones are treated as I have not flown after buying it. Regarding drone batteries, yes like any other battery they have to be carried in cabin luggage.

On a slightly different note -
For for finer controls try Dronelink and Litchi apps. Apparently these allow active tracking and bunch of other features.
Ok. What are Dronelink and Litchi apps? Can you please throw some more light on them please?

These are 3rd party apps that can you use in-place of the DJI fly app. They offer additional features and functionalities that are drone specific. Here is a detailed review of Litchi app. I have been keeping an eye on this as I can think of many ways to use "follow me" feature. Not going to take the plunge soon and use it as this is still a Beta.

Great job with the Swiss video dada. In some of the frames, the drone seems to be drifting/bobbing a little, was it because of wind?

Batteries in carry on for sure. There are also explosion proof bags to carry drone batteries just to be safer.

Drone can be safely in checked-in luggage from what I've read. It can also be in your cabin luggage with some precautions (take out all propellers for example) but the security check-in at various domestic airports is really unpredictable at times so not too sure about this.

Yes need to be cautious while flying indoors. Plus most of the time due to lack of GPS lock indoors, mavic switches to visual guidance and that can be hit or miss.

I am on look out for extra batteries, however very difficult to source and are expensive in India. If you know any sources then please let me know.
Get the prop guards from Aliexpress, I got something like these which are more convenient to carry around although I have the bigger much safer original ones that come in the combo box.

I see the batteries selling around INR 4.5 - 5 k mark with various sellers and its quite a mark-up from the listed DJI price of $45 but reasonable considering the duties. Best bet is if you can have them carried over by someone travelling from abroad. Alternatively just get one battery for ~5 k and it should be sufficient for most needs.

Considering Mini is a beginner drone, the should have considered the guards in the standard as well I feel. But they hardly cost $20 as an official accessory so people who really need it can get them easy, atleast outside India.

Litchi app has some cool features but at INR 1,700 for a beta under test app, I wouldn't consider it unless i'm really into drones.

Both dronelink and litchi apps enable some functions which are either missing or deliberately crippled by Dji in mavic mini. For example follow me mode which I think should have been there by default.

Additionally they allow take off in any area (may not be always safe) and some more features.

A question to both of you, will using a 3rd party app for flying a Dji drone void the warranty? Moreover I have the Dji Care Refresh which is essentially a sort of insurance for the drone. So if the drone gets damaged during a flight while using a 3rd party app, will the insurance still be valid? The Litchi app is £21 here in UK which is quite steep! I can still go ahead if it is really that good and does not void the insurance and warranty.

Thank you procrj. The Mavic Mini is extremely prone to get unstable in moderately windy conditions. It gets very difficult to get continuous stable video in such conditions. In fact it gets tricky to even get 3 or 4 seconds of stable clips!

Well I am not sure if using Litchi or dronelink will void warranty, however on paper I believe it will void warranty. Also since you are in London UK, I believe you may run in legal troubles or get fined (if you are not careful) as Litchi allows you to take off even in controlled airspace.

I am waiting for Litchi to come out of beta before using it as last thing I want is my drone flying away due to bug in that app
Also you have DJI care refresh so that's another reason to hold off until above points are clear.

Quick video based on some pretty basic moves using the mavic mini

Need to get better at panning, both vertically as well as horizontally. Trip details posted on my ownership thread.

Re: The Drones Thread - Reviews, Tips, Advice

I am still trying to get familiar with the mini. My son, however has become a bit of a pro. That said, he did have a bad one with trying a stunt of a manual landing and trying to catch it when he realized its going wrong by a few centimeters and that meant, his fore arms saw some bruises. Thankfully, not deep cuts but more like scraped.

I continue to struggle with the Circles shot. I somehow end up doing some mistake and the Drone sets off in a very big radius, and i get a feeling that it is flying too far away and i manually intervene and cancel the circle shot, for the fear of losing the drone.

Definitely needs practice. Enjoying every bit of owning one.

Friends - The DJI mavic mini is retailing at 30K on Amazon. I couldn’t find the prices for the Combo though.

And the DJI tello combo is available at under 11k after bank discount on Amazon if someone is interested. Great budget option to get into drones especially considering Mavic mini combo is elusive on Amazon since few months now https://www.amazon.in/dp/B07GNDQYS3/..._uUWIFbABYD858

Re: The Drones Thread - Reviews, Tips, Advice

The only drawback with the Tello is that it doesn’t come with the controller and you’ll have to fly it using your mobile and touch screens. Else , it’s a good one to start off I guess.

I am getting into following boats and other floating objects over oceans and lakes in manual mode. Not easy as it looks and requires much focus. This video I edited of various such videos I made.

Re: The Drones Thread - Reviews, Tips, Advice

Mavic Mini 2 is already in queue and hence you are seeing these prices drop.

Mavic Mini 2 is going to come with 4K setting and improved battery life.

Also, news is Mavic Pro 3 is also in queue but waiting for the new FAA guidelines to get implemented by end of the year and then another 6 months in modifying it.
