The size should preferably be compact, and I have no particular brand preferences (Okay, slightly tilting towards Sony because there is a big Sony showroom within walking distance of my home :P ) . My budget is around 10-12K.

In that case, stick to cameras with at least 28mm or below on the wide angle. Don't even worry about the tele end or zoom factor.

I guess Jayesh does not deal in the sony systems, got a no from him on SMS enquiry about a month back.
BTW, which lens are you planning to get for the a200, not many good reviews of Sony lens available, might help me decide as well

You know what - I recently tried out the old 18-55 kit lens from my D50 back on the D300 and surprise, surprise the images were much sharper than the ones from the 18-200 VR!!!!! I was completely taken aback by this phenomenon and am all the more convinced that I need to replace my 18-200 with something more suitable.

Not at all surprising. High mega-pixel count and high zoom factor severely compromise image quality. But these are the exact specs that attract most buyers since they are convenient. The camera makers know this and use it to the max by pushing mega-pixels and ultra-zooms.

For example, for family and indoor shots, wide-angle ability is most important, so at least 28mm is optimal. Recently I bought Lumix FX-36 because it has 25mm wide, and I don't even recall what is the max value at the tele-end, I don't even care since it doesn't matter. Although I still have my excellent Sony F-717, I rarely use it since the max wide is just 36mm which is lousy for indoor/family shots.

Not a surprise. But think of the toss up this way - if you were stranded on an island with nary a soul in sight (but with an SLR - for some strange reason) and desperately needed to take a picture in fading light, which lens would you pick?
The 18-200 is a do-it-all lens. It's not exceptional at anything. But the size, weight, and convenience of it outweigh the disadvantages. It is, in one word, liberating.
It is my No.1 carry around/travel lens. Since I got it 6-7 months ago, I don't think I've taken it off the camera. For quality and when I have the time/inclination to carry stuff and swap lenses - I'll use other glass.

I'd take my 30mm F1.4 Sigma or the 50mm F1.8 Nikkor which are both great in low light.

I agree its a great multi-purpose lens, but it really pisses you off when you get slightly fuzzy pics of painstakingly planned shots.

The external lense cannot be the reason as it was all clear n cleaned up as this photo shows

Thanks. So are you saying that all your photographs have spots. The red outline is an indication to the problem.

How so? Can you tell me more - what kind of picture were you taking? In what kind of light? Was VR on or off? Active or normal?
I haven't encountered that. In fact it's helped me take sharp shots from a car moving at 80-100 km/h and at 1/8th of a second at 200mm. I was very impressed with these feats.
