'My Tracks' - It is also by Google and free.
It can save in GPX, KML and other formats.

I record tracks and export them through this app itself to Google-MyMaps for future recall.

A noob question to seasonsed GPS users. I've never used a GPS before but am planning on getting one soon in my new car Nissan Terrano.
There is a media unit that the company sells separately that includes touch based controls, Navigation system etc. (based on MMI maps).
Since i've never used a GPS system before, is accessing the system (referring to maps, changing destination, giving a glance without losing sight of the road etc.) ergonomically better from the Head Unit than getting a aftermarket fitment that attaches to the Window pane ?

If you are a person, who likes to play with gadgets and work on maps/logs/waypoints etc, then I would suggest don't go for the stock media unit. Instead get a separate Garmin device. That you can at will connect to your PC and do many things.

Suppose I add the MMI/Sygic maps to my Garmin. Does the navigation algorithm also change to the latters more robust routing. How to get them, and approximate pricing, and any innexpensive ways to get MMI/Sygic.

Also, no map upgrade from Garmin since October (I think). Unfortunately, their routing algorithm is very poor.

My Mapmy India travel pilot GPS has conked out; want to pick up a GPS; pick an offline GPS or get one installed inline in my Duster? I tried managing with only my iPAD (waze and google maps); with my BSNL 3G so spotty on the iPAD many places the maps/data simply freeze or worse give wrong info as I found the weekend in interior Tamilnadu (near Sathyamangalam thereabouts) :( Any ideas or thoughts which will be the better option for a Duster? I still have only the stock ICE unit (no navigation) as mine is Jan 13 model. Thanks in advance and cheers

Go in for an Asus Phonepad tablet (7" screen) & Sygic. You can download the statewise maps for offline use. Also, if you are travelling to some remote places, download the relevant areas in Google Maps for offline use (latest update re-allows that!). The main advantage with Asus unit is that it has a very good GPS lock - locks on to both the American-GPS & Russian-Glonass satellites. Have been using this for the last 6 months. Excellent results. Also managed to do some stocks trades using the tablet & Vodafone 3G data.

If you are travelling alone you may need to buy a suitable dash holder for the tab.

Thanks. Yes that's good option. Does this Asus Phablet come with 2 SIMS, one for voice and another for Data? Otw, data on regular 2or 3G SIM with roaming may be expensive, no?

This is most likely personal preference, but I use a TomTom stuck to the front window, even in my Jaguar that has a built in GPS with a display in the centre console. Two reasons. I find it much easier to look at the TomTom, because i can place it in the exact position where I want it. It doesnt block my view, but When I look at it, my eyes, are still more or less on the road. Second, to date the TomTom functionality and maps are far superior to any inbuilt system Im familiar with. Those will catch up Im sure.

No, the navigation algorithm will not change. "Map" is data, not software.

* Talk to MMI - they will send you an SDCard with Garmin-format MMI map

Anything specific that bothers you?

Garmin's navigation algorithms are quite robust and spot-on. It doesn't make boo-boos like Google navigation does. The major difference between Garmin, Tom Tom, Sygic or any other navigation software is usually the UI and information elements shown on screen.

The navigation algorithm is pretty much the same in all of them. Only Google shows alternatives based on travel time and (dynamic) traffic density, before you start your journey. All others show just one route based on the routing setting (shortest time or distance).

Also, unless I am going to areas where roads were not / partially mapped earlier, I really haven't felt the need for a map update. If a particular portion of the route is actually closed and forces one to divert / reroute, nothing helps unless one Google which is the fastest to update maps in the background.

No. The Asus Phone Pad comes with only 1 micro sim. That is why I ported my number to Vodaphone. I have an add on 3G plan of Rs. 299 p.m. for 2GB monthly full speed & 256K after that. Found speed to be pretty good. Also use the PhonePad as a standby Wifi Hotspot when my main Cable Internet goes down. Manage 2 computers with RT Intraday trading & streaming data feeds on the 3G.

The charges for data are fixed irrespective of roaming. There is hardly any difference between 2G & 3G charges. Besides I found Voda 3G to be strong in the major cities & they revert to 2G in the mofussil areas.

All right, so I planned my route on a PC and exported it as a gpx. Then used the navigation feature in OSMand and used this gpx to guide me to my destination. On return, when I tried the reverse track - it literally reversed it! It started guiding me to drive on the right side of the road!

Did I do something wrong here? Or do you need to save 2 different gpx as a workaround?
