re: The Mobile Phone Thread - Queries, decisions, discussions all here

Got the Samsung Galaxy S3 pebble blue a couple of days back and I'm impressed. I was using an iPhone 3G before this. When I started using the iphone 2 years ago from my ancient HTC touch I almost thought it like a step back. The iPhone had no predictive dialer, no SMS fwd till later, no business card sending option. To enable bluetooth you had to navigate through menu options. It was like a step back.

Now with Android I am loving the ease of use. It's just brilliant. The S3 smart stay feature is really cool with the front camera monitoring every 30secs to see if your still looking at the screen. If not it turns the display off. It also synced easily with the Figo's bluetooth head unit. Only one small irritant I saw was that the contacts do not get synced as a result the HU shows only the number of the incoming call instead of the name. In the iPhone there was an option to sync audio as well as contacts.

Are infi-beam and saholic good places to buy mobiles online? I know flipkart is good, but the cost is little more there for mobiles.

Usage includes EMAIL/INTERNET/MUSIC/PHOTOS/etc. I expect new phone to have excellent battery life/reliability/snob value.

Should be a latest model as I will be using this one for at least next three years. I am willing to wait for 1-2 months if some thing better is coming up.
I have selected following models from Sony & HTC.

Sony XPERIA U –
Processor – 1GHz
OS – Android 2.3
Camera – 5MP
Memory –4GB nonexpandable
Screen- 3.5
Price- 16500

Sony XPERIA Sola
Processor – 1GHz
OS – Android 2.3
Camera – 5MP
Memory –8GB Expandable
Screen- 3.7
Price- 20000

HTC Desire C
Processor – 600 MHz
OS – Android 4
Camera – 5MP
Memory –4GB Expandable
Screen- 3.5
Price- 15000

HTC Radar
Processor – 1GHz
OS – windows os 7.5
Camera – 5MP
Memory –8GB Non expandable
Screen- 3.8
Price- 15800

HTC One V
Processor – 1GHz
OS – Android 4
Camera – 5MP
Memory –4GB Expandable
Screen- 3.7
Price- 18500

Please suggest me which phone is VFM and best of the lot at that price point. Refer to my requirements in the quoted post. HTC phones have one clear advantage of having expansion slot even in cheap Desire C. Also please rate these phones by ranking them.

Go ahead. Both are good. Between the two, I would suggest Infi as the first preference. IIRC they have a return policy too; in case you get a defective piece. Infi also takes care of Octroi where applicable. But please confirm that. In fact, check the same thing about Saholic too.

If you can live with only 4Gb of space for your photos, music etc. then the
Xperia U is the greatest. If not, then HTC one V would be your best bet.

Check out their reviews on this website- Tech2.com

What are your requirements? Whats the budget? That will help everyone to pitch in with their recommendations.

Off the top i can suggest Htc One X, One S, Galaxy S2, Galaxy Note, Sony Xperia, Motorola Atrix 2.

Regards.

You can find online prices for the Xperia U at 14,990 unlike 16,500 being quoted in stores. That's the price it launched at. Since the demand is still high, stores haven't reduced prices.

Thanks for your response. I am leaning towards Galaxy Note but will take the call after i check the options you suggested and the launch pf Note2.

Budget: not very specific but should not go beyond S3 price (38k).

Must have:
  • Fast browsing, lots of memory for games and apps (expandable preferred), email, good battery backup
  • Screen should be good and responsive. Used to Super AMOLED by Samsung
  • Should have good support for firmware upgrades. Samsung stopped providing upgrades for Galaxy S1. Dont want to be in that situation again.
Quite happy with the performance of Wave1 which is my current phone. But miss the zillions of apps in Android.

Open for Android tabs too. In that case, i will be keeping my current phone.

Your last requirement says it all i guess. You should get the Nexus range of phones. They are the first to be updated and contain pure Android without any touchwiz or sense UIs. And fulfils all your other requirements also of the screen and 16gb memory.

For tabs please visit the tablet thread for suggestions. Lots of info out there. Why not opt for the resolutionaryn iPad instead of an Android tab?

Thank you Raccoon. Actually I read so many bad reviews about Infibeam in mouthshut.com that I got discouraged. I will mostly go ahead with them and place an order for defy+, my first android. Hope it will not disappoint me.

Actually I am seeing very few good reviews on mouthshut [dot] com nowadays. It has become like a place where you rant about products and services. Forums like the ones we are in right now give you a better opinion than some unknown random people's reviews.
