Re: Launch of new Corolla & Innova by Mid-2015?

For God's sake Toyota, please give the new corolla a bigger diesel engine which it deserves. Very few are going to pay 18L+ for a 1.4L 90ps engine.

The 1.4L D-4D just doesn't make sense any more for a car with such a high price. If not a 2L may be a 1.6 or a 1.8L diesel mill has to be plonked in.

2014 Toyota Corolla spotted testing in India

The 2014 Toyota Corolla has been spotted testing in India, strengthening the idea of an early release in 2014.
Here are couple of spy shots shared by ACI.

Unveiled in June in Europe, the India spec version is likely to be the same as the one sold in Europe.
The current 138bhp 1.8-litre petrol and the 87bhp 1.4-litre diesel should march on with minor tweaks.
The petrol variant would be mated either to a 6-speed manual or a 7-step CVT gearbox while the diesel engine is available only with the manual gearbox.

I guess the current version already has a 2 litre Diesel. 1.4 Diesel was in the launch version, however they were quick to plonk a 2 litre.

Nope. Corolla comes with 1.8 L gasoline and 1.4 L Diesel engines. The diesel is same as Liva/Etios but with VGT instead of FGT.

Agree with everybody's opinion on the Diesel engine. The engine needs to be atleast a 1.8 unit with punchy performance. And the car has to be loaded to the brim with goodies. Toyota needs to learn from the Hyundai fluidic Verna about providing the features.

This attitude of Toyota disgusts me. The Indian Corolla gets only 2 airbags as opposed to the American version that gets 6, not viable due to costs/scale, accepted. But having the same engine for both C & D segment sedans just doesn't cut the cake.

Re: Launch of new Corolla & Innova by Mid-2015?

I saw the heavily disguised car doing the rounds in Indira Nagar today evening. It was flanked in the front by a Corolla Altis and followed by a T Fort. Though I could not click the pictures of the interior, it looked quite plush when I passed the car. Please see the photos

I completely agree with you. However, it is all about market dynamics and maturity of market. Until now, US Corolla was available with age old 4 speed AT and no climate control AC and was still one of the best seller sedan. Even the new corolla's base is same old 4 speed AT. Whereas Indian Corolla is running on 7 speed AT since long time and climate control was available from day one. So it all depends on market situation and positioning.

Hope Toyota doesn't skip on safety features on new Corolla.

From whatever I could make out from the contours of the car, the exterior looks of the car, kind of look similar to the camry. Both the front and the rear. Anybody else felt the same ?

Re: Launch of new Corolla & Innova by Mid-2015?

2014 Toyota Corolla rated 'marginal' in IIHS crash test.

The Toyota Corolla, despite a full redesign for 2014, failed to fare well enough on a tough, new crash test to receive honors from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

The overhauled compact Corolla received a "marginal" score on the IIHS's small overlap test, which simulates a 40 mph crash where the driver-side corner of a car strikes an object like a utility pole, tree, or oncoming car

The Corolla, as a result, will not qualify for any IIHS honors in 2014, when an "acceptable" or "good" score on the small overlap test will become a prerequisite for either Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ honors

The IIHS said the crash test results exposed several potential dangers with the car.

The corner of the car crumpled into the driver's space, raising the chance of lower-leg injuries. The dummy's head rolled to the left, off of the airbag, which can cause a head injury if a real driver's head strikes the A-pillar or dashboard.

The good news for Toyota, was that the side curtain airbag in the Corolla deployed and provided enough protection to the dummy's head

From the article, it looks like the 'small overlap test' is the bane for new Toyota and a lot of other cars. The Merc C does better and so does the Civic.

It is another blow for Toyota, which has struggled with the small overlap test since its introduction last year. America's top-selling car, the Toyota Camry sedan, received a "poor" rating on the test for 2013, as did the Prius V hybrid and RAV4 crossover.
And 'small overlap test' will resemble most of the accidents on a single lane road. Maybe these cars will fare better against another car as opposed to a truck or a high median. Too bad side curtain airbags wont feature in most cars sold here.

More details on the test here:

I hope the 2015 engine does match to the aggressive looks, unlike the current gen one. They have the 142ps 2.5L diesel mill on T-Fort elsewhere, which can be introduced in India to justify the exorbitant price of the MUV.
