re: Maruti Celerio to get 800 cc diesel engine. EDIT: Now launched!

I heard it was 58 PS and 150 Nm of torque which I think is decent enough for a car of this size and weight. If it's 35 PS, I guess, my enthusiasm goes away right from the start.

No I am not expecting blistering pace in a car this size, but what I am expecting is 58 PS and 150 NM for sure if I am paying around 5 lakhs on road for this. Also since it will be a 5 seater ( 4 seater I know, but everything in India with a backseat is a 5 seater) and with the AC on, I guess the struggle with 35 PS will be too much.

Okay, I guess enough of the speculation from my side. Maruti, let the power be 58 PS pretty please.

The funny part is that Maruti will still sell a lots of it.Irrelevant to what the bhp or torque is.
Hope they don't get greedy with the pricing.

I agree. 35 does seem very low. The mass market that Maruti is targeting would surely use this for family commutes. With this low a power rating, it will be an uphill task to pull them along on a hot sunny day.

re: Maruti Celerio to get 800 cc diesel engine. EDIT: Now launched!

From our official review of the petrol Celerio:
Quote:
The Celerio makes 67 BHP @ 6000 rpm & 90 Nm of torque @ 3500 rpm.
We are used to diesel variants being a little under- or overpowered than their petrol hatchbacks but cutting power by nearly half! That's a new one.

But 30 kmpl is an irresistible proposition. If Maruti gets the driveability right, they could have another big seller on their hands!

Someone had a spin in the Celerio diesel . Here's what he has to say. Thanks for sharing, man!

Quote:
Vibrations are there at idle and low rpms. However, the turbo lag is not too much. People may feel the lack of outright power / turbo kick. In fact, some may even mistake it for turbo lag. The in city driving is pretty good. NVH has reduced considerably from the earlier test mules. The real world fuel efficiency will be the only USP of this car. I consistently got 20 kmpl and above in the city. Rest, am sure you guys will find out yourself soon!

re: Maruti Celerio to get 800 cc diesel engine. EDIT: Now launched!

I believe the power output of the diesel Celerio would be in the range of 45 ~ 50 PS or bhp (which is around 35 kW) and 12 ~ 13 kgm of torque.

A similar 800cc twin-pot common-rail diesel engine is the one found on the ultra fuel efficient Volkswagen XL1 concept car, where it works in combination with an electric motor in a parallel hybrid configuration. The VW 0.8 TDI, which is essentially the (earlier) Vento's 1.6 TDI chopped in half, produces 48 PS (47 bhp or 35 kW) and 120 Nm.

The small Suzuki DDiS, with its similar 800cc twin-pot common-rail configuration, is bound to produce an output similar to the little VW two pot oil burner.

Do I see a small hint about the guy who was lucky to get his hands on the diesel Celerio?

I know we can not compare Celerio diesel motor with this but just to give an idea what an 800 cc commonrail turbocharged engine is capable of.

Following are the specs of Tata Ace Dicor an 800cc engine which was planned to be used in Nano diesel.

I am sure Suzuki's engine will be able to generate more power.

re: Maruti Celerio to get 800 cc diesel engine. EDIT: Now launched!

Maruti should learn from the failures of Tata after they went for the cheapest tag for Nano. Imo, Tata lost the grip in the Indian market after introducing Nano. People associated Tata with cheapness.

Same may happen for Maruti as well. By introducing the cheapest diesel and mini lorry with the 800cc diesel engine, Maruti may get some short term benefits in numbers, but is suicidal in the long term.

Taking a good guess, the 125 should stand for 125Nm of peak torque.

There is no other parameter which could equate to 125.

re: Maruti Celerio to get 800 cc diesel engine. EDIT: Now launched!

Well the 1.3 DDiS makes 190 Nm, so 125 sounds on par for 0.8 litre.

But the 125 nomenclature sounds strange and makes the name sound more like a bike.

re: Maruti Celerio to get 800 cc diesel engine. EDIT: Now launched!

Unconfirmed, A source from dealership informs that Celerio 125 stands for 1.25 liter of engine, maybe a de-tuned Fiat diesel engine.

MSIL just wants to have the First mover advantage in the segment.

re: Maruti Celerio to get 800 cc diesel engine. EDIT: Now launched!

The most fuel-efficient car in the market Celerio DDIS 125 is likely to develop around 12.7kgm (125Nm) of torque and around 45bhp.

Quote:
The closest rivals — the Chevrolet Beat diesel and the Hyundai Grand i10 diesel — develop around 15.29kgm and 16.31kgm respectively from their larger capacity motors.
