Maruti has just started advt. in the electronic media. Yesterday night(17-Apr-2007), there was a ticker in the Set Max channel during the match between Eng Vs SA.

The advt. says " Coming Soon.. The perfect Male accessory..SX4.."

Actually, they are planning to launch that and position it in-between the Gypsy and Grand Vitara.

Report from BS motoring

The Maruti Suzuki SX4 sedan is all-set for launch

The Suzuki SX4 – a large hatch based on the same platform as the Swift, but bigger and more spacious – got a tremendous response in international markets last year. Customers, magazines, even bystanders and jaywalkers loved that car. At the 2007 New York Show, its new cousin, the SX4 sedan made its debut, just a few days ago. What is most significant is that we know that the SX4 sedan will replace the Maruti Suzuki Baleno. The launch is scheduled for the last week of this month.

While the built-in-Japan, American SX4 sedan will go on sale with a 2000cc, 16-valve, DOHC inline-four making 143 bhp and 18.7 kgm, we won't be getting that lucky. The Indian SX4 will receive a thoroughly reworked Baleno motor – 1600cc, 16-valve DOHC, inline-four motor making approximately 102 bhp. Which is roughly the average peak power for the segment. The American and Indian cars will both have five-speed manual transmissions, although there will be a generation's gap between them.

The SX4 chassis evolved from the sparkling Swift, so the SX4 sedan promises to be fun to drive as well. The Indian SX4s are likely to sport a 'rough road package' which translates to stronger components and the ability to take quite a bashing. Of the three trim levels expected to go on sale at the launch, the top-end model is likely to offer ABS and airbags as standard. 15-inch wheels is likely to be standard fitment although the top model could have 16-inchers. JK Tyres' excellent Vectra tyres are probably going to be the OEM fitment on the SX4.

The look of the SX4, according to Suzuki, was inspired by the Japanese kabuki masks. Which explains the aggressive front-end and grille. The Swift-ish rounded wedge shape is very evident and the car will be personable. It has all the right styling elements from the arched fenders to the low, rising waistline. The Americans will get a standard aero body kit complete with rear spoiler. It remains to be seen whether all of that will come to India as well.

On the inside, Suzuki has been careful to make the SX4 sedan an enjoyable car to live in. All the doors open wide, the cabin promises to be spacious and the tall seats should also make for a commanding driving position. Suzuki says the SX4 sedan has the largest overall interior space than its competitors in the US. Aluminium touches liven up an otherwise dark, but stylish interior.

The Indian SX4 will be launched with a price range extending from Rs 6 to Rs 8 lakh. Which means it will have a host of cars as competition, right from the Chevrolet Aveo twins to the Ford Fiesta twins, and from the Mahindra Renault Logan 1.6 to the Hyundai Verna and Honda City. For the moment, the 1600cc petrol will be the sole engine, but we're optimistic about the SX4 getting a 1.3 multijet motor later on, in 90 or 104 bhp tune. It was time the Baleno was replaced, and we're quite happy to see the SX4 coming in its place. Stay tuned for the first drive right here.

Had taken my 800 for servicing. The guy incharge of my vehicle had just returned the day before after training on SX4. Was praising the car a lot. Indicated price to be 6-8 L. Also told has some great colours and interiors and has an average of around 12-13 in city

New engine for SX4 sedan, launch next month: Jagdish Khattar

Maruti to drive in future models on new generation engines
New Delhi, Apr 22 (PTI) Preparing itself for tougher emission norms ahead, car market leader Maruti Suzuki will be driving in all its future models on new generation of engines, starting with its SX4 sedan scheduled for launch next month.

"We are preparing ourselves in our engine capability for Euro IV and Euro V norms, which involve heavy investments," Maruti Suzuki Ltd Managing Director Jagdish Khattar said.

The investment on engines was a part of the Rs 9,000 crore outlay the company has already announced, he added. Khattar said all future models from the stable of MUL would be equipped with the new generation of engines to align itself with parent Suzuki Motor Corp's strategy of complying with stricter emission norms.

"Suzuki is already producing Euro IV and Euro V-compliant engines for Europe and we are trying to run parallel to them," he said, adding the M-series engine on the SX4 sedan will mark the beginning in India.
At present, the M-series, dubbed as the future of Suzuki engines, is being imported from Japan and fitted with a few components at Suzuki Powertrain India Ltd's facility at Manesar near Gurgaon for the SX4 sedan. The company is in the process of increasing the localisation levels.

Having already rationalised its vehicle platforms in India, the latest move is part of Maruti's strategy to enhance cost efficiency.

"Our platforms in India have been rationalised to three. In future, we may not see more than four platforms with the fourth one for bigger cars as and when we decide to get into that segment," Khattar said, adding the engines will also be rationalised accordingly.

Currently, with the new SX4 sedan, MUL will have three platforms (one for Alto, Zen Estillo and WagonR, and another for Swift).

The SX4 sedan, equipped with 1.6 litre M-Series petrol engine, will compete with the likes of Honda City, Ford Fiesta and Hyundai Verna.

Khattar said with the SX4 sedan, MUL is making an attempt to become a force to be reckoned with in the A3 segment (mid sized sedan).

"Already, the Esteem is doing well for us in the lower segment of A3. With SX4 at the upper end, we are looking to be an important player in the mid sized sedan," he said.

Globally, SMC has also been making a conscious effort to change its image from being a compact car major to a serious player in the bigger segment. MUL is also adopting a similar strategy in India.

"To get away from the image of value-for-money small car maker we wanted to become stylish. Swift was the first attempt, and SX4 will be a continuation of it," Khattar said.

Cheers
