Insider information on Nissan India's upcoming SUV

Thanks to the Team-BHP fan (he prefers to remain anonymous) who sent this information in. Heartfelt gratitude for sharing it with other enthusiasts via this page!

Earlier this week, Nissan released a teaser image of its upcoming sub-4 meter SUV for India. We now have more insider information on the new SUV.

The Nissan Magnite subcompact SUV-nissan-bsuv-teaser.jpg

According to the source, the sub-4 meter SUV is expected to feature sporty and modern styling and best-in-class interior space. It could get a stepped roof like the Triber to increase headroom The quality of the interior is expected to better than any other Nissan model sold in India.

The source has reported that the new sub-4 meter SUV is likely to be offered with a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine. The entry-level variants might also get a naturally aspirated 1.0-litre unit.

It is said that Nissan has worked extensively on the new model incorporating customer feedback about the Kicks and Terrano. The carmaker has reportedly focused on its driving dynamics and sound deadening.

Interview with MD Nissan India

When the going gets tough, the tough get going?

Some points that he mentions and maybe known from elsewhere too:
- INR 6,100 crores of investment in Indian operation since existence
- One new car/model every year
- Non committal about the current generation of Micra coming to India
- Reiterates that Sub 4m SUV is 'Made in India, Made for India'
- Steers clear of the Renault Nissan Alliance rift
- Answers about Nissan values when asked about continuing operations in India

Obligated to be optimistic?

Hope these rumours are true and Nissan indeed has a winner on its hands.
However, I would like to say that right now, these seem more like either a wish-list or a pre-release marketing pitch.

re: The Nissan Magnite subcompact SUV

Saw this interview and it definitely looks like a marketing pitch for the upcoming product. However, if it is even close to 90% of what Rakesh Srivastava said, could bring in lot of value and volume for Nissan.
If we go by the interview, should have been visible doing test rounds in next few months, since they are targeting H1, 2020

Good move Nissan. Atleast they have not given up.

What I feel is Nissan is not really targeting the issue for their failure. There is no issue with their vehicles(Eg.Kicks) but people are reluctant to buy based on cost of ownership.

Nissan should improve their after sales/ service this is where the existing pain point is.

Excellent move Nissan!

With the bullet proof reliability of their vehicles and fantastic service, they only need smart marketing and advertising to push their way up .

re: The Nissan Magnite subcompact SUV

Happy to be proven wrong here, but Nissan’s products off late haven’t been innovative or priced well initially. The Micra was probably Nissan’s strongest offering and to an extent the Sunny as well. The Sunny was sold at super high discounts towards it end stages, but couldn’t sell. Nissan needs to do a Renault like it did with Triber. Offer an innovative and value product but not just do badge engineering.

I don’t think so, but happy to be proven wrong.

re: The Nissan Magnite subcompact SUV

To add some more info.

the DATSUN brand which was supposed to be a cheaper NISSAN sub brand for INDIA will be killed post BS6 transformation.
All models will be NISSAN Branded.

Remember the DATSUN CROSS SUV, I think its been rebranded as a new Sub 4m SUV under the NISSAN Brand name.

What is their answer to BS-VI diesel? I guess this may be a petrol only option? Because if they have answer to diesel, the price points may not pan out.

Renault - Nissan haven't parted ways yet. Assuming that this car must have been developed in the past one-two years, I am a little skeptical that it is a 'Nissan' only platform.

The fact that there is no diesel and the 1.0 litre NA and Turbo engines are the same as the Triber, it can't be ruled out that this new car is indeed based on the CMF-A platform.

A different top hat maybe, like what they did with RediGo and Kwid.

Nissan Magnite could be the upcoming Nissan sub-4 metre SUV.

Nissan had filed a trademark application for ‘Datsun Magnite’ last year. Now, the company has filed a trademark application for ‘Nissan Magnite’. Can even confirm that it has created a Nissan Magnite logo and filed a trademark application for the same.

Upcoming Renault, Nissan compact SUVs to sport sunroofs.

Quote:
Renault and Japanese partner Nissan are understood to be looking at equipping their upcoming budget compact SUVs with the feature. The move would make the Renault HBC (likely to be called the Kiger) and Nissan EM2 (expected to be launched as the Magnite) the most affordable models in India with a sunroof. At present, the most affordable car with a factory-fit sunroof is the Honda WR-V. Interestingly enough, no model in Renault and Nissan’s present India line-ups get the feature.

The Kiger and Magnite will also go one-up on their CMF-A+ platform-mate, the Renault Triber 7-seater, in equipment. The Kiger and Magnite will come equipped with steering-mounted audio controls and will also be offered with automatic climate control, features that are not available on the Triber. Connected tech could also be part of the package on the compact SUV duo.

Powering the Renault and Nissan models will be a 1.0-litre, three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine (codename: HR10) that’s expected to put out around 95hp. Gearbox options will include a 5-speed manual and an AMT automatic gearbox.

The Nissan Magnite is scheduled to go on sale in May 2020, while the Renault Kiger will follow in July 2020.

re: The Nissan Magnite subcompact SUV

Nissan’s India future hinges on Magnite compact SUV

Stunning design, first-in-class features, and an ultra-competitive starting price of Rs 5.25 lakh, Nissan’s Vitara Brezza rival could script a turnaround for the company; August 2020 launch.

Quote:
Nissan has always been reluctant to get into a price war, and, as a result, its products haven’t offered the same value proposition as their rivals. The Kicks is a case in point – its uncompetitive pricing was a large reason for the very capable SUV’s poor show in the market. With the Magnite, Nissan doesn’t want to take any chances and has gone against its grain by committing to an incredibly aggressive launch price which sources say will be “around Rs 5.25 lakh for the base variant.”
Quote:
Its baby SUV is packed with big-car features including a massive touchscreen and all the connected tech from the Kicks. Higher variants of the Magnite will get a 360-degree camera, two-tone paint options and a premium set of alloys.
Quote:
The Nissan Magnite will be offered in multiple variants at launch. The base model will come with the recently upgraded version of the familiar Renault BR10 engine that also powers the Renault Triber. This three-cylinder, naturally aspirated motor develops 72hp and 96Nm of torque, and is paired to a 5-speed manual gearbox.
Quote:
Higher variants of the Magnite will get Nissan’s state-of-the-art HR10 engine. This potent and compact 1.0-litre, three-cylinder turbo-petrol will develop around 95hp, and will be available with two transmission options – a 5-speed manual and a CVT. Even the top-end CVT variant is expected to be very aggressively priced with sources indicating it could be “under Rs 6 lakh”.
Quote:
Nissan’s current plan is to launch the Magnite this August, in the run-up to the festive season, but the uncertainty surrounding the coronavirus crisis could result in a delay. If there is no change in plans, Nissan will get a jump over partner (and rival) Renault.

A starting price of 5.25 lacs and top of the line CVT at 6 lacs. Not both can be true IMO. Also, Nissan needs to ensure quality for this product. It was supposed to be a Datsun branded vehicle and going by how GO and GO+ are built, i will be sceptical. Pricing can not be their only trump card.

Any why on earth do they want to put a 1.0-litre NA engine in the lower variants? I know that Renault has succeeded with the same engine in the Triber but stakes for Nissan are even higher this time.
