What are the chances of this being a sub 10 lakh car?

Let me play the devil's advocate here.

What happens to umpteen Army Disposal Jeeps being assembled in Mayapuri, Dabwali, Moga etc, which sell for 4 to 5 Lacs, with no creature comforts, except being open top crude 4×2.

With the introductory price for Thar 4×2 rumoured to start at 8-9 Lacs, with all creature comforts. Who will buy these Jeeps?

Remember this one too?
It was around in the 1950’s-1960’s to compete with the then Land Rovers.

Thar is liked for its 'Jeep' looks. It is considered more urban and up market than the Bolero Neo. Although Bolero Neo is more practical with 5 doors and 7 seats, Thar is what the heart wants. I feel Thar 4x2 will be priced a little above the Neo.

re: Mahindra Thar 2WD, now launched at Rs. 9.99 lakhs

Interesting introduction by Mahindra. Drove a Thar Petrol Automatic in Goa. Did not do any off-roading. Would not have known how to use the manual 4x4 system if I had to do off-roading - actually can’t even drive a manual car anymore after 12+ years of using only automatics (and despite having driven manuals for 19 years before that).

So unless M&M is going to give a full time 4 wheel drive, the 4 wheel drive is useless for folks like me. The 4x2 Petrol Automatic Thar would meet all our real needs. Of course, Thar not a practical buy - and if I ever buy one, I would pick the 4x4 for image (and perhaps for getting some like Tejas to give me a 4x4 training once in a lifetime). But for anyone who does not see it as a toy but as a genuine second car, the 4x2 is a great option.

For people like me it is a go anywhere anytime grand tourer. The 4x4 is definitely handy when wandering around the hills and grasslands and so on. I tend to use it as my primary vehicle considering the frightful roads of Bangalore.

And there lies the rub. Most of our cities and towns and roads in general are perpetually under construction and/ or development. Most of them are dug up for some reason or other. The Mahindra Thar in its 2WD avatar will be more than capable of handling all this. And it will give any normal person a great deal of confidence and courage when battling lousy road surfaces, heavy rains, floods and the like.

This is why the 2WD Thar is going to be an absolute runaway hit in India. It is just plain common sense considering our general operating conditions.

re: Mahindra Thar 2WD, now launched at Rs. 9.99 lakhs

All excitement and hype over the new RWD Thar is more or less due to its rumoured price point.

I am in market for sub 12-13 lakh diesel car (read at least a capable cross), can find none but a Nexon and XUV 300. For me Thar with all its impracticality also makes sense and would prefer it over these two.

So at the end of the day, again its the price, otherwise we already have a dearer 4WD variant on board if it was just for the Thar.

Lets hope Mahindra surprises with the prices here, and start with 9.99 L

re: Mahindra Thar 2WD, now launched at Rs. 9.99 lakhs

I don't think the 2WD Thar is going to drastically increase sales.

1. It's a Thar at the end of the day. That means 2-door impracticality, bumpy ride quality & awful highway usability / stability.

2. The sales increase will be marginal in the longer-term, once the initial launch excitement settles down. The Thar is already doing ~4000 units / month which is incredible for an impractical Jeep.

3. In fact, the overall profitability of the product will come down as many customers who would've otherwise bought the 4x4 in a higher trim will now happily settle for the 4x2. This will reduce the average transaction size.

The only reasoning IMO behind the 4x2 Thar is that, Mahindra might see demand softening for the 4x4 and a cheaper Thar is a way to sustain the existing sales levels. Demand for the 2-door will also fall off a cliff once the more practical 4-door Thar is unveiled. I forget the exact numbers, but 75 - 80% of Wrangler sales in the USA are for the 4-door, not the 2-door.

This I agree with. It is a fact that the 5 Door Wrangler Unlimited/ Sahara / Rubicon in the US (and elsewhere) far outstrip the equivalent Wrangler 3 door versions for reasons of sheer practicality and useability.
I wonder if there is a similar trend in the case of the Defender 110 vs the 90.
So when they introduce the 5 door Thar with only 2WD and RWD it will become ubiquitous like our old Marshal, Armada and Commander and Bolero and all. It will be commissioned into multiple duties like Ambulance, security personnel deployment, rural transporter and so on. Its a Mahindra after all.
And the speed of evolution into all these avatars may also be fore-shortened because the product lifecycles are getting shorter as we go along.

Dabwali and Moga are as good as gone, they don't have them anymore. Thanks to stringent measures, these gypsies are no longer easily available. Some cheats are still selling some of these, fudging engine numbers and documents. These are registered in Uttarkhand rto and are always shown as Euro4 in the RC no matter what. Came across a Gypsy Euro 3 passed off as a Euro 4. I opened the hood when the owner stood his ground that it was a Euro 4, there the distributor was, waving to me. I closed the hood telling him it was indeed a Euro 4.

That's fantastic pricing for the diesel 4*2. Just like the v1 launch, this is going to have good waiting periods.

With the price of LX Diesel, mainly the price difference between 4x4 and 4x2; I am sure you would want to rethink over this statement

10,000 bookings will be gone in like 20 seconds

Looking at the pricing for Petrol AT, I have no regrets going for my Thar last year. Excellent pricing for people who are okay with Diesel MT.
