I have driven the Jimny extensively in Japan across many terrains.
Agree completely on this one. The Jimny looks very European as in a compact but effective off roader which can be taken for city runabouts. Comparing it based on it's size alone is not doing it justice, what needs to be seen is against the abilities for which it be built.

Re: Maruti Jimny 4-door @ Auto Expo 2023

Maruti is making it ample clear beforehand itself not to expect this to be a typically priced mass market Maruti product. The number of times Mr. Srivastava mentioned the word 'premium' hints at that. He also mentioned for urban users who need macho looks we have Fronx, Hyryder & Brezza.

I think this will be atleast at par with Fronx if not more pricing-wise. And doesn't look like Maruti really wants this to become another mass market product, rather would be happy with it being a niche offering.

I somehow feel this thread will go silent after the price declaration just like Fronx thread.

Mind you, I would be happiest if Maruti proves me wrong and this gets an awesome pricing

You stole my thoughts!

Someone should ask the marketing fellow what is Maruti's plan? to make Jimny a mass seller, especially in rural and mountains areas Or keep it as a premium niche offering priced high and catering to Urban Yuppie fantasies. Or will they do both with a base model (all stripped out version) and a Top end Alpha Beta Gamma at other end.

I remember Gypsy when it came out, was the second most expensive model just below Maruti 1000 if am not mistaken (Edit or was it most expensive?). So will Jimny be the same?

Re: Maruti Jimny 4-door @ Auto Expo 2023

Suzuki Jimny 5 door will not be sold in Europe.

Apart from India, the Jimny 5 door will be sold in Latin America, South Africa and a few other African and ASEAN nations, primarily markets where the K15B engine clears emissions norms.

Quote:
K15B engine does not meet European emission regulations
Jimny 3 door now sold in Europe as a commercial vehicle
Installing the K15C would require a lot of re-engineering
Quote:
The Suzuki K15B engine does not feature any type of electrification and on the Jimny 3 door it emits 154g/km (for the MT) and 170g/km (for the automatic) of CO2, which is quite high.

In order to achieve the 95g CO2 target, Suzuki had already stopped selling diesel vehicles in Europe a few years ago, and subsequently, had to pull the plug on the Jimny 3 door as well
Quote:
possibility of the 1.0-litre Boosterjet turbo-petrol making its way into the Jimny is ruled out. The advantage of the smaller turbo-petrol engine having a capacity of less than 1,200cc would make the 5-door Jimny fall in a lower tax bracket due to its sub-4-metre length, and this could make it more affordable than the 1.5-litre version. But at the moment, the company has no plans to replace the K15B with the 1.0-litre turbo unit.

And because it is going to be offered in South Africa and Australia and New Zealand, I am hoping they pay adequate and serious attention to both passive and active safety aids and thus enable the vehicle to get atleast 4 stars in the safety tests.

Re: Maruti Jimny 4-door @ Auto Expo 2023

If we are expecting Jimny top variants to be priced on-road for less than 15-16 Lakhs after seeing those off road videos from media drive, and if it happens it will be a miracle. It doesn't have the width of Thar, but Jimny is a solid highly capable off roader or go to anywhere car. How many so called SUV's in our market can do what we have seen in that GaadiWaadi media drive off-road video? From my point, whatever comfort or features or butch look it lacks, for it's off roading capabilities alone Maruti Suzuki can justify the price tag of around 18-18.5 Lakhs on-road.

The next question is, is it all about off road? For me, it's not.

Jimny will fit me perfectly for my usage patterns like:

1. Any short runs in and around my hometown on those narrow roads
2. Drives to hilly twisty roads
3. Driving through unpaved roads or broken roads
4. If it can cruise on 100-110 without much stress I will happily take it for once in a year highway run also

The first 3 usage patterns I'm not really going to drive above 60-80kpmh, and I'm not expecting to see any problem with Jimny in those situations.

I would love to buy a 5 door Thar, in fact, I would love to own a Wrangler (at least a used one) but my budget doesn't allow me to buy those. So my practical option is to go for Jimny which has its own advantages when it comes to my usage pattern and also gives me the flexibility to do some mods to make it even more capable.

Re: Maruti Jimny 4-door @ Auto Expo 2023

Clearly a 'premium' product.

What they should do, is to launch a very stripped down, roof sawed off Jimny as the Gypsy.

Undercut the RWD Thar and watch it fly off the shelves. They can keep Jimny a premium brand.

Re: Maruti Jimny 4-door @ Auto Expo 2023

Suzuki did launch a stripped-down version of the Jimny in overseas markets called the Jimny Lite, which could always be a possibility with the 5 door Jimny too.

It comes with 15 inch steel wheels instead of alloys, in-dash CD player/radio rather than a touchscreen unit, halogen headlights and no foglamps.

The Zeta variant does come with steel wheels and halogen headlight setup without foglamps and headlight washer. Although the audio system is similar and not a CD unit. Thankfully, the 6 airbags are standard on Zeta and Alpha.

I simply love the Jimny to bits and I totally agree with you on the point that its strengths come to life where the road ends and the trail begins. But that itself is this vehicle's drawback, to get to the mountains, deserts, forests, etc., most people have to tackle long (tarred) roads, and that undersquare K15B coupled with the solid axle suspension and the superbly high stock GC is only suited to very relaxed driving. We might momentarily push it to even 160 in places but we won't be able to safely hold speeds in excess of 90. This vehicle will leave too much to be desired in its roadholding capabilities, and besides, with the the aerodynamics of a small house, fuel efficiency will take a HUGE blow at high speeds.

Considering all this, how can we justify prices in excess of 10 Lakhs ex-showroom for the base variant? I mean it has huge offroadability and some utility too but that's just about it. Maybe a few people with the money to spare might buy it for that once-or-twice in a year off road excursion, but for most, including myself, a high price will be a dissapointment and a massive letdown.

I also feel that the discussion within our team has suddenly moved towards accepting the speculated high prices. And if the Suzuki fixes a high price, I will become richer by 25,000 INR, because I will immediately cancel a booking I had made for a Pearl Artic White Zeta Manual, on the 14th of Jan.

Cheers.

Re: Maruti Jimny 4-door @ Auto Expo 2023

Considering the recent launches of Maruti, the Jimny is sure to be launched as a premium product with a "premium" price tag and it is sure to upset many who expected a lower price.
The promotion from Maruti is clearly trying to elevate Jimny as a premium offering, Moreover, Jimny isn't intended to sell ten thousand a month in the first place, once the initial hype dies down, sales will stabilize and the product will be bought either by those who need an off-roader or the ones who just want to satisfy their fantasies.

Bunny of 91 wheels is a good reviewer.
And this 5 door Jimny is really something I must say, judging by the video in the Indian context.

I totally agree with @bijims views here, once the initial hype dies down, People would find better value in the Thar over the Jimny and even if they don't in the current 3-door version, the 5-door will definitely change that for the better. Pretty good choices for the ones looking for good capable offroaders.
