Maybe what you have under the hood is an Accord engine that Honda dropped there by mistake. :-)

Impressive figure from a C-segmenter. The only time I saw 20-23kmpl kind of FE on highways was with our M800. BTW, was this with a/c on or off ?
This was with A/C on.

Frankly, i dont think there is any modern engine that isn't fuel economical. It all depends on the combination of throttle pressure, engine speed, vehicle speed etc.

Your cruising speed is not as important as the way you reach that speed.

Fiat Palio 1.9D

I think FE also depends on the number of people on board, AC and whether driving during day/ night.

The following are the figures for Fiat Palio 1.9D

4-Adults and 2 Children
14 Kmpl
Hyd to Blr
575 Kms.
AC on 75%

Single Driver
17.5 Kmpl
Hyd to Blr
AC on 50%

Mostly night driving !!

Santro Xing - 10 km/l :(
Why is it so low? This is with 70% ac and only in the city. Never goes on the highways. Am running 185/60 goodyears and have a K&N replacement filter. Petrol is always from the same Shell bunk.

For the first 220 odd kms the the fuel needle didnt move at all. In banglore city I am getting 18 Kmpl in this zen.

Zen really rocks I should say
Really rocks. My daughter's zen rarely crosses 10.5kmpl ,slow ,start stop and only city driving. Please tell what is the secret.

Dont know whether there is any secret , but this is what I did.

Got the air filter cleaned and oil changed (engine and gear). Brake pads, brake oil and radiator coolant, petrol filter etc were replaced before the trip. As Zen Ac is pretty much useless, I didnt use it, instead kept the window open. And for my trip from home I was rather scared to drive it at higher speeds because of the age of the car. So major part of the trip was on 5th gear at speed of 70-90 with two people onboard.

Yes, I too would like to know. I have driven a Santro Xing (2003 model) till 2006. In the later period it gave ~10 km/l. I was any way trying to upgrade, so I sold off the Xing and bought Accent CRDi, stayed with Diesels since then (migrated to Fiesta and now Verna), and I have been getting 18-20 km/l, partly because of the good roads I drive in

Finally filled up Ode readings and numbers from Petrol receipts in a worksheet to get FE numbers.

For Alto, these are the numbers :

1. Expressway : 18 - 20 kmph (100% AC)
2. Highway inside City : 14 - 16 kmph (100% AC)
3. Bumper to bumper traffic : 9 - 14 kmpl (100% AC)

With some improvements in driving style (managing braking/ air conditioning/gear shift better), i got an improvement to 8.7 km/l.

Usually measure full to full. Always fill up from Shell Chromepet.
