Update:
Finally! The white Knight hit the highways after a long time.
1200kms in 3 days.
Chennai - Coimbatore - Chennai over the weekend.
Route taken: Chennai - Villupuram - Ulundurpet - Kallakurichi - Attur - Salem - Avinashi - Coimbatore.
Amazing roads! NH45 & NH47.
Speed maintained: 100-110kmph
Mileage: 24kmpl with two people on board & the boot and rear seats filled with luggage and AC on at all times.
The odo stands somewhere at 23,xxx kms!
It pulled effortlessly even with the heavy load & returned a good mileage!
Love it!

@saadat - Sorry if this has been already answered. What is the cost of a paid service by Toyota for the LIVA ? How is it comparable to say Maruti / Hyundai?

It's the cheapest service cost you can ever get for a car in India.
Expect 3,000 to 3,500 per 10,000 kms for all paid service. The only aberration is when you replace the brake pads which adds another 2,900 INR to the service cost.

For normal servicing, all that you replace are

• Oil, oil filter, oil gasket, windshield washer fluid ( every 10,000 kms )
• Air Filter and Brake fluid ( every 40,000 kms )
• Air Conditioner filter ( every 30,000 kms )

The Etios is equipped with Life time fuel filter, life time transmission fluid, and a coolant which lasts for 1.6 lakh kms.

PS: I'm using a Diesel Etios, drives pretty fast on the pot holed roads in Kerala and the service cost has stayed true all this while for 54,000 kms. The only thing is that I opted synthetic oil instead of the stock mineral oil. So, my service cost would be in the range of 4,500 to 5,000 instead of 3,000 to 3,500 per 10,000 kms.

Amalji this is one reason that i was so inclined towards the etios at one point of time & later dropped the idea for other reasons. Running costs of a Toyota are surely the lowest. I have been following this thread from the start and I appreciate your contribution & for constantly keeping us updated. Thanks again keep posting.

Yes, the running costs are damn low especially for the Etios, Innova, old Corolla and Prius.

For Corolla Altis Diesel, the fun is somewhat spoiled by 2 factors -

• Brake pad replacements which would cost around 17,000 per 20,000 kms.
• It's not equipped with the lifetime fuel filter used in the Innova and the Etios. So, that would add another 2000 per 20,000 kms.

Regardless, the Corolla Altis maintenance cost is still cheaper than the cars it competes with in that class.

I found something weird. When i rev the engine properly from first gear instead of shifting it really early, car actually feels a lot eager after 100kmph & the mileage is better too when the accelerator is maintained at a certain angle (100-110kmph). Whereas, if i shift much earlier, the car feels sluggish after 100! Have to pin my foot down for it to get past 120kmph. Yesterday, on the Chennai Bypass i was finding it difficult to keep up with an Innova in an open stretch(its a 6 lane road). I had shifted much earlier than usual. But, on the return leg the car was very eager & was pretty aggressive! 140kmph was a breeze & a Polo D and a Grand i10 were struggling to keep up with me.
One thing is for sure, the mileage depends on your accelerator angle & the performance depends on your shifts!

Update:
The white Knight finally crossed the 25,000kms mark yesterday!


No issues so far. Mileage is around 12-13kmpl in city!
Took it in the bypass today, struggled to cross 140kmph! The roads weren't that good though!

It was on a deserted stretch on the 6 lane road! I usually dont go above 100-110kmph due to 2 reasons: 1. Safety , 2. Mileage!

So yeah! Like the sticker on my car says , I drive safe!

Ola people, thought I will update mine. Nearing 3000 kms now, first service done. Getting approx 15kpl in the city with mixed driving including a few highway blasts. Max speed done was 100 tops. Want to know, does the clutch stay this heavy or will it ease up a bit? Also, was thinking of fitting a turbo cut off timer. Found a few good ones, including Toyota ones off the web. Lets see! Anyone who has an idea about how to go about this fitment, will be mighty appreciated.

Only 3000kms? That's kind of less isn't it?
The clutch does stay heavy! Hasn't eased up in mine & my friend's Liva too(77k done in his)
15kmpl in city is astonishing!
I get around 10-11kmpl only. The highways as you know, is a different story altogether!
Got an average of 20-21 by maintaining at 100-120kmph on the 4 lane NH & with some clutch only driving on some really really bad roads(about 5-6kms) and constant braking and acc on 2 lane state highways.

Update:
The white knight crossed the 27k mark on Friday! Its now at 275xx kms! No rattles, no issues! Happy with the Liva!

The clutch will remain heavy. That's my experience with Liva GD with 36K+ km on the odo.

I think your 10-11 kmpl is too less for a diesel Liva. How are you calculating the mileage?

My car consistently gives 16-17 kmpl in city, with mileage going up to 18 kmpl during the winter months. The mileage drops only if the tyre pressure is low. I keep 33 in the front tyres and 31 at the rear. Two points more than what the manual recommends. I calculate mileage by tankful to tankful method and normally refuel after 350 kms of running. I never go towards the near empty mark.

I haven't done much of highways, but on the two occasions that I have hit the highways, the mileage is around 22 kmpl.

I am normally a relaxed and sedate driver, but even if you have an adventurous driving style, the mileage should not be this low. Please check if anything is wrong.

Oh well I need to get shoes with bricks glued together! In traffic the clutch takes a bad toll on my knees. That is something to take in in return for the fuss free experience.

I do the same, although I maintain 33 on all tyres. And tankful to tankful it always is for getting the most accurate mileage figures. Also one more thing, in traffic do you pick up from first or second? I tried doing the same in second and actually love it. Same for breakers. Thoughts?

Agree. I get 15-16 kmpl in Bangalore traffic on my diesel Liva. That too with short distance journeys. My daily commute is usually 6 km + 6 km to/from office. I normally keep 32 in front and 30 in rear tyres, top up once a month. On highways I get 21-22 kmpl. On a recent trip to Wayanad I got 22.72 kmpl with sedate driving in speeds of 80-100 kmph.

And yes, my clutch is still heavy after 19K+ on the odo.

The car runs 2-3kms daily and that too in small streets where you cant go above 3rd gear.
I rarely fill the tank! Its usually for 500 or 1000 bucks! I dont fill the tank unless there's a highway run.
I fill diesel for 1000 bucks (from reserve) and it does 150-170kms before hitting the reserve again!
You get 16lts for 1000, so 150-170 means an average of 10kmpl! This is how I do the calculation!
I always fill as soon as it hits reserve!
