GTD is different from magnatec. I also confirmed with him he said use magnatec 10w40, there isnt any oil by the name of magnatec GTD its either Magnatec Or GTD And The latter is 15w40.

He also mentioned that its mentioned on the pack that it can be used in diesel cars , am not sure of this thats why wanted to confirm this.

The Castrol GTX range is for petrol engines, the GTD is for diesels. Castrol does have a diesel engine oil that's branded as "Magnatec GTD" but I've never seen it in India. So I was wondering if you'd actually found "Magnatec GTD".

Sorry for the confusion.

In theory, multigrade engine oil (like the Magnatec that you mention) can be used in a diesel engine - but its better if you look for an engine oil thats formulated specifically for diesel engines. Please look for other options.

IMO - using castrol GTD would be a better option than paying more for an engine oil that is formulated for petrol engines (the Magnatec that your mechanic is suggesting)

Correction.

Castrol has GTX labelled oils for both petrols and diesel. The GTX diesel engine oil is CH rated and is different from the GTX petrol. GTD is CF and hence inferior.

castrol edge 5w40 4 ltrs Rs 2300/-

There are few shops in JC road which even have the HElix Ultra at less than 3k for 4 Ltrs.

I guess its just the old stock with those rates.

Castrol Edge as per my understanding does not lack in any way. Its their top of the line oil and just as good as Helix Ultra.

Marketing, marketing, marketing... Somebody's got to pay for all the parties and corporate seminars at 5 stars...

For everyday use, just use normal reasonable quality oil and change every 5-10k as recommended by the mfr.

The major difference between Petrol and Diesel oils is the detergent content. Diesel oils have a higher detergent content. Most oils carry both petrol and diesel ratings. In general Diesel type oils are more highly developed.

Not anymore. According to the Castrol website, it is now rated CH-4 and is available in 1 & 3 litre can.

When you and me bought it sometime back, it was available in 4 l can and was CI4. Something has changed, not sure what.

You can switch to either of the two oils that you have mentioned. There will not be any problems.

I have found Castrol Magnatec to be the most VFM oil in the present market. I have used all kinds of synthetics. But I don't think their cost is justified in the Indian context. Moreover I change the engine oil every 5000 kms, so for me cost is a criteria. I went back to Magnatec after using both Shell Helix Ultra & Mobil 1.

I recently started using Shell Helix (mineral oil) and found that also to be very good. Engine has become extremely smooth with it. The only problem with this oil is that you don't get 15W-40. I had to settle for 20W-50. Next change is going to be Shell Helix Super which is available in 15W-40.
