Folks I know this might just be stupid question after the query I posted above but the question is, if I really need to change to synthetic oil??

I did go through the thread and after reading the posts I need to know if this change is mandatory for my kind of usage.

I use this car for a max of 1000 kms a month.

I will be using this car for about 5000 kms more and then it will go to my brother who is not really bothered as to what oil the car is running on.

I don't rev the engine too much. The usual shift happens at about 2500-3500 rpm. I don't red line very often but it happens at lease once every time I drive.

Last point, not sure if this makes a difference. I have low-mid range headers for the car.

So should I get synthetic oil or the normal oil which the MASS uses??

Taking the above into consideration, I would recommend using mineral oil.

^^^Ya, mineral is fine, but no need to go with what they use at the MASS. You could get better stuff elsewhere...

Since its been a while. The service station recommended using the flush @ about 450Rs. So decided to just get it done the best way.

just went through their website. please have a look once. its the best one i have seen ever.

Castrol EDGE
As per my understanding Castrol Edge is their flagship product and is a very good a Synth as Mobil1 or Shell Helix Ultra.

I got quotes for Shell Helix Ultra (Old Stock) for 2700 and Mobil1 only at 4700 odd.

I actually dont get this Semi-Synth option. Are there any real value options?

Been using only synthetic oils in the vRS. Have used 3 brands till date.

Mobil 1 (5W50) , Shell Helix Ultra (15W50) and now OWS (5W50)

Have just driven about 50 kms on the OWS today. But amongst the 3, initial impressions when I changed the oil is that with OWS the engine is much smoother and quieter than Shell or Mobil.

Will report as I pile on the miles.

Hi. What does the OWS oil cost? Had not seen or heard much of this brand. So I looked it up on the 'net.

I went to get an oil change for our Swift (petrol) from my local gas station, and a 15W40 grade oil was used.

I just checked the owner's manual, and Maruti recommends SF 20W40 (What's SF?)

Will this cause the engine to run any differently, or will I experience any abnormal behavior in the car's performance/running?
The oil was some MK brand, and read API-SJ. I didn't even bother asking if it was semi-synthetic or regular mineral oil. A 3-litre bottle cost me 592/-

BTW, the car has done 23K km.

What is the difference in price of a 1-litre bottle of regular mineral oil, and semi-synthetic oil?
What are some good brands for both?

The grade should be ok for your car. You wont see anything abnormal.

I dont think there is any MK brand of oil in the Indian market. Since you filled up at a petrol bunk, I suspect it was MAK. Its prolly not the best stuff available, but it'll do the job... so to speak.

What you have used is definitely a mineral oil. One litre of mineral would cost approx Rs. 200 - 300 /litre. Fully synthetic usually retails between 750 - 1000 per litre, approx... depending on brand and dealer.

Good brands for mineral - Mobil, Elf, Chevron, Shell, Valvoline, or any major brand... many choices.

For synth - Mobil, Shell...

Petronas is a south east asian brand which is worth considering for both mineral or fully synth. Many people seem to be happy with it. Its cheaper too.

Brands & cost for petrol engines

What does a 1-litre can of Castrol Magnatec cost?

What about regular mineral oil brands such as Shell, Castrol GTX, Chevron, Valvoline, Elf & Mobil?

I was told by the local bunk owner that an oil change should be done every 5K km or 3 months, whichever comes earlier, if you live in Mumbai; 6 months, otherwise. Is it true?
My city-running is very low; the only time I put some miles is on cross-country trips.

Where, in Mumbai, can authentic products of Mobil, Shell & Castrol be purchased?
