New Delhi: For Prachi Bhatnagar, 34, and her two children, it was a miraculous escape. In one of most intricate rescue operations carried out by cops and Delhi Fire Service officials, Bhatnagar and her two children — Shaurya (3) and Aditya (7) — were rescued from inside a ravaged Alto car that had met with an accident on the busy Mathura Road late on Friday night. A bystander, who was near the accident spot also injured when the car driven by Bhatnagar collided with a truck carrying iron roads.
Not everything went according to the plan during the rescue operation, which lasted more than two hours near Jasola Vihar. Meghna Yadav, ACP (Lajpat Nagar), who was at the spot, was injured after a hook of the crane used in the operation slipped and fell on her. All injured persons are now undergoing treatment at Apollo Hospital.
The accident took place around 12 midnight when Prachi was returning to her home located in K-block of Sarita Vihar from the Ashram side. While Shaurya was sitting on the front seat along with Prachi, Aditya was sitting on the rear seat.
According to Sarita Vihar police, Prachi crossed Apollo Hospital and reached near the Jasola crossing. A little ahead at the 13th road cut, she took a U-turn. ‘‘A trawler truck, headed towards Nehru Place, was speeding towards Apollo Hospital. Prachi was taken aback by sudden appearance of the huge truck. She lost control and the car got stuck under the trawler on its right side,’’ said a senior officer.
The impact was such that the entire top portion of the car got mangled and front tyres came off. It took the trawler driver some time to figure out what was happening. The trawler dragged the car for nearly 50 metres by the time the driver came to know about the mishap. He immediately stopped the vehicle and, along with his helper, fled from the scene.
‘‘My first reaction was to think that everyone inside the car had been crushed to death. Imagine my surprise when I found Aditya, hale and hearty, but shocked, sitting in the backseat. The cops called up ambulances and in the next 10 minutes they rescued both children and sent them to Apollo Hospital. However, there was little response from Prachi when the firemen arrived,’’ said Asif, an eyewitness.
‘‘We realised soon that we cannot rescue Prachi as her legs got stuck under the car dashboard. We even tried gas cutters. But when that failed, we decided to use a crane to lift a portion of the trawler. After that, we used gas cutters and finally brought her out around 2.15 am. All three are safe. An MLC has been made of both Shaurya and Prachi but Aditya did not even need first aid,’’ said a fire department officer.
By the time the rescue operation got over, a portion of Mathura Road was choked. With Kalindi Kunj witnessing aheavy rush near its ghats due to Chhath Puja, the traffic situation had worsened. ‘‘We deployed extra personnel but normal traffic could be restored only by wee hours on Saturday,’’ said joint CP (traffic) Satyendra Garg.
Curiously, cops said Prachi has refused to lodge a case. ‘‘We have registered a case of rash and negligent driving through our DD entry. We have not yet even got a statement from Prachi who is said to be under trauma,’’ said the investigating officer.

The new 4 lane highway has been contructed where they have dug drains between the driving lanes and service lanes these kind of accidents are daily happenings in Raipur.

The truck was trying to unload the mud for highway expansion.

This happened last week in Nagarabhavi (Bangalore ). The car is brand new and was driven by a lady who was learning to drive ( understood from the L board ) and apparently she was trying to reverse the car and take a right from the position where the car is standing and probably gave too much RPM and this is what happened. I am wondering how much of rpm she gave to climb so many steps. No one was injured.

Thank God the car was aimed at the stairs. Else it would have taken a plunge at one of the shops below. It happens, new drivers misjudge the brake and press the accelerator to everyone's horror.

Don't you think that Alto wreckage is more mangled because of the attempts to get them out rather than complete and total destruction by the truck

The pillars are cut and the roof is sheared off in an incident where the bodies have to be fished out, and it seems that a similar job has been done here. But the engine compartment and the rear fender (whatever is available in that image) is badly damaged.

How on earth did they get the driver side door opened with the stair pillar blocking it. was the door open when this happened ?

this takes the cake! i mean, those are stairs not a flat surface also at about say, 35 deg angle and to think how much acceleration would have been required to get the car up there!! once the lady hit the first step, would she have realised it?

further proof to keep away from L-board drivers!

Probably, when she hit the first step, she panicked and pressed the accelerator hard instead of the brakes.

Its easy to misjudge the pedals if one is learning. But at same time if one is learning then he/she should keep off the busy and tight lanes till they gain some confidence. Good that no one was injured. Hope the lady takes it her stride and does not give up on driving.

I passed the stretch that very night barely some time after the accident had happened (around 12.00 PM). Had went to attend the marriage of wife's cousin.

There was massive jam on this road, & the Ashram to Badarpur road was clogged with traffic too. I happened to see Aditya (elder son) being carried away by a rescuer to the PCR ambulance (Sumo that the Delhi Police are using these days). As confirmed in the news article (also posted by akshaymahajan), the child was shocked (presumably unconscious but no visible injury).

Needn't stop as the police & rescuers were there & did not wanted to cause further problems to fellow commuters/ drivers on that stretch.

I've been through the entire thread over the course of a few days. I've decided to write a story on road safety in India. Can someone who's been in such an incident or had a close family member injured/killed in a road accident PM me. I'd like to interview them for this story so that a boring story about India becoming the world's accident capital and what the government claims to be doing about road safety can be portrayed against the reality on the ground. Anything with regard to safety features (or a lack of them), poor infrastructure and poor driver training would be great to highlight this. For sourcing issues, I'd need to quote the person.
