Did Bangalore-Kannur via Periyapatna-Siddapura route on last friday. Started from BTM at 4 in the afternoon and reached home in Kannur at 12.30 AM

total time - 8 hours 30 min
Break - 1 hour 30 min
Drive time - 7 hours

Other than few KM from Periyapatna-Siddapura drive was good.

6 hours of running time from Kannur to Bangalore through Siddapura? You should be a bachelor Jaggu ...I took 6:49 hours(running time) through the same route but with 'baby on board'. As you mentioned, other than the entry from Periyapatna to Siddapura, the route is pretty good.

been to kannur and back last week

onwards - tried nagarhole manathavady route - fairly good.asphalting going on in some stretches. good option for those who are going to manathavady,tellichery. for kannur/payyannur its a waste of time and fuel IMHO. add to that we have to watch out for the forest checkpost closure timings. didnt have much of wildlife sightings as well.few monkeys and deers.

return - mattanur - virajpet - siddapura-periyapatna - good roads, barring few stretches viz - ammathi - siddapura and about last 10-15kms before periyapatna. for kannur would recommend this route under present conditions.

Thanks Rajesh. A very good news indeed. When I was coming back from home on Sunday night, I have seen some road works going in between Gonikoppal and Hunsur. The roads between Kutta and Gonikoppal are better now.

I am planning to drive to Payyanur on 6th of April'13 for Vishu. I will be taking the Periyapatna - Siddapura - Virajpet route. Hope this route is still the best at current conditions

Looks like there is no respite yet for the Hunsur-Gonikoppal section.
Also how is the road condition beyond Gonikoppal, till it intersects the Virajpet-Iritty section?

My scorpio was all battered and rattling like crazy after 35kms of drive through hell. Hell as in Hunsur -- Gonikoppa route. One of the worst roads I have driven through in the recent times and this was about 2 weeks back.

So stay away and do the siddapura--virajpet -- amatthi route to kannur. Just about 6/7 kms of not so bad roads.

"Quality of roads" seems to be a relative term. For Bangalore-Kannur travellers, the baseline seems to be be much lower because any route you take has quite a lot of bad sections.

Based on my experience a month or two ago :

Mysore to Periyapatna : Excellent roads
Periyapatna-Sidhapura : Bad for the initial 8-10 kms, good road thereafter
Sidhapura-Ammathi-Virajpet : Very average road conditions. While you don't have too many potholes, the road is rough and speeds > 60kms is not advisable
Virajpet-Iritti : Initial 10 kms or so is quite rough - strictly 40-60 kmph terrain. Roads are much better from thereon.

(No comments about the roads from Iritti to Kannur since I deviated to Taliparamba from Iritti, so no idea how good the Kannur route is)

Iritty to Kannur via Mattannur-Chalode is in good condition. There was a time not long ago when Iritty to Mattannur used to be hell, but all that has been done upon and the surface is super smooth now.
The Kootupuzha (state border)-Telicherry stretch will see a major face lift now that ADB has approved the funding for upgrading this road to international standards (but only 2 laned)!!

Already, land has been acquired and the tendering is done and work is expected to start from April. No tolls on this road since it is a KSTP project!

I did a Bangalore-Payyanur-Bangalore this weekend. Took the Hunsur-Kushalnagar-Virajpet route onward and return. Mostly good roads, and butter smooth tarmac for more than 10 kms on the Kushalnagar-Siddapura section, making it very easy to cover the extra distance, and the remaining section still very drivable. Massive road upgradation works are on the two points on the Iritty-Taliparamba section. One has to be extra cautious at night! Hope they finish it well before the monsoons.

Had to drive to Kannur on 1st April on an emergency. Started at 4AM from NewBEL road and reached Kannur by 11.20 with a 20 minute breakfast break. Took the Mysore-Hunsur-Periyapatna-Siddapura-Ammathi-Virajpet-Iritty-Mattanur route. Roads, as many have reported, is good between Bangalore and Periyapatna, bad for around 10-12 kms from Periyapatna to Siddapura, decent but rough with some very good newly laid patches from Siddapura to Virajpet/Perumpadi check post and excellent then on all the way to Kannur town.

This is so true! In fact, even better is the slightly longer route via Mananthavady that goes through Hunsur-Nagarhole-Kutta-Periya ghat-Nedumpoil-Koothuparamba-Kannur...route suggested by Sandsun7. This is even better and might actually save time.

Besides there was the nice wildlife - posted a few pics including what looked like an injured stag.
