I just traveled the following route a week ago and its pretty nice. Except 3 to 4 kms near kutta.

Mysore bypass road - hunsur - nagarhole - kutta - tholpetty - mananthavady - kuthuparamba - kannur.

re: Bangalore - Kannur : Route Queries

A big thank you guys! I will stick to this route itself then. Will try to take some pictures of the road if possible, so that it will help others.

You can contentedly opt for Bangalore->Mysore->Hunsur->Periyapatna->Siddapura->Ammathi->Virajpet->Iritty Route.

Back up option right now this, based on just number of people recommending

We are planning a trip to Mahe from Bangalore. Which is the best route to be taken? How's the condition of the Mysore-Kabini-Mananthavady stretch? Can we take this route to Mahe?

Not recommended as of now (Till they complete the repairs of the bad 15 km stretch near Karapur).

The best as of now would probably be Hunsur-Nagarahole-Kutta-Mananthavady-Periya-Tellicherry-Mahe.

Thanks Kala. Instead of going via Thalassery, can we take the route via Mananthavady-Makkiyad-Kuttiady to Mahe. How's this stretch?

Taking the Kuttyadi ghats may be shorter, but I have never driven that stretch - so no idea about the road conditions (except that I've heard that the roads are a little bit narrow), that's the reason I didn't suggest that route. Whereas there have been many recent reports here about the Periya route, and it is known to be in decent shape except for a few potholes on the ghat section.

May be someone who has travelled through the Kuttyadi ghats recently can clarify.

Jaggu,

I second RajeshK. You can also go to Kushalnagara and then take siddapura route. There are some 2 to 3 KM again which is still not improved i believe but should not be a challenging stretch. By the way, what time you are starting from Bangalore? I am planning to join with my friends for attending a marriage at Payyannur. We are starting at 11:45PM this Friday from Electronics City and opting Nice Road to get into Mysore Road.

re: Bangalore - Kannur : Route Queries

Came to Payyanur yesterday for an unplanned visit. Started from Bangalore at 06:30pm and reached Payyanur by 3am today morning with enough breaks in between. Took the Periyapatana - Siddapura - Virajpet route. I would say, this is the best route at present. The bad roads are only few kms after the turn off to Siddapura from Periyapatna which is easily manageable. The patching work is completely done from Siddapura to Perumpadi Checkpost including the first 4kms after the checkpost, but the road is very rough and bumpy which will surely slow you down.

re: Bangalore - Kannur : Route Queries

I also did an up an down Bangalore->Mysore bypass->Hunsur->Periyapatna->Siddapura->Ammathi->Virajpet->Iritty>Mattanur>Kannur. Onwards left Bangalore at 545 am reached Kannur at 1 noon (~6.30 min run time). Escaped an interceptor in KL, thankfully it was looking the other way lol.

Return started at 8 am and arrived home at 3 pm. Running time would be about 6 hours after deducting the pit stops. The entry to Siddapura route is really bad, no you wont ground or anything but have to be very careful if you are not used to really bad roads.

Though part of the road to Virajpet is fresh tarmac rest is really ROUGH surface. I had pumped up the tyres expecting bad roads and just ripped over em I love the Swift, makes you fall in love when you show it some mountains.

Once again thanks guys for the route.

@Jaggu, when did you came back..? Yesterday there was a huge 10hours traffic block in the middle of the forest after two trucks collided around 1am on Monday . (The news in Mathrubhumi -> http://www.mathrubhumi.com/kannur/ne...9;ി.html ). One of them went out of the road. I reached the place around 4:30pm still got stuck for 1hr due to the traffic block.

Saturday onwards and Sunday was the return, since it was Sunday morning, traffic was thin, even escaped traffic on Mysore road and was home by 3 pm.

re: Bangalore - Kannur : Route Queries

Did Bangalore-Hunsur-periapatna-siddapura-virajpet-iritty for the onward journey last weekend, started at 5.00pm from silk board and reached iritty at 1.30 AM.

For the return journey, we took mananthavady-kutta-tholpetti-nagarhole-hunsur-bangalore. I'd say the later route had far better tarmac, but you cannot take this route in the night. As always, loved to throw my swift in the curves, especially late night from virajpet to iritty
