Next weekend I am driving to Dudhsagar Resort (Mollem) from Pune. Based on your recent experience, do you think I can cover this in Brio with family (daytime driving)? I am thinking of giving Safari a rest.

When I called the resort they could not say with confidence, just mentioned last 20-25 kms is "very bad".

tia,
-
Tryable during the day I would say. The bad sections are really bad.

My Luck - It was night with almost zero oncoming traffic into KA. So I could drive on both lanes assessing the potholes. During day and oncoming traffic, It can be testing after that drive from Pune.

Brio wont be an issue, you wont jump a pothole as your speeds itself will be less but then, you may not get room to negotiate a pothole at your will.

In the end, its still doable. The section after Border is Butter smooth.

Other alternate is to approach this from Ponda-Margaon side making an entry from Chorla.

I see one route is from Chitradurga- shivamoga and the other is NH206 from Tumakuru - Tiptu etc..

@Klub Class which route is currently in good condition from Bangalore to Jog?
Any update? What is the best way to get to Jog from Bangalore? via Chitradurga or via Tumkur?

Bengaluru - Nelamangala (NH4)
Nelamangala - CRPatna (NH48)
CRPatna - Arsikere (SH)
Arsikere - Shimoga - Sagara - Talguppa - Kodkani - Jog Falls (NH206)

Best route. Did it last in August. Chitradurga Shimoga road is in patches and plenty of diversions.

Breeze uptill CRPatna (4 lane tolled road)
CRPatna - Arsikere (traffic free wide 2 lane smooth tarmac, love this part)
Arsikere - Shimoga (2 lane, smooth Tarmac, patchy in certain areas, heavy car & bus traffic.
Shimoga - Talguppa (excellent 2 lane highway, plenty of moronic omni drivers and reckless eicher drivers)
Talguppa Jog (patchy but manageable. Lots of curves, inclines and slopes)

Aniketh

re: Bangalore - Goa : Route Queries

Planning to do bangalore -Goa tonight. Plan is to leave by 3:00am and take the following route:
Bangalore- Tumkur- Chitradurga- Haveri - MK Hubli- Khanapur- Chorla- Mapusa- Candolim

Will it make any difference if I take the above route instead of taking Hubli bypass - alnavar route?

Also what would be the best place to have breakfast. Are there any Kamat between Haveri & Hubbali? I guess there is one in Ranebennur.

Thanks

There is a CCD at Shiggaon(360 kms) and Kamat before Varur (Right Hand side) which will be around 25 kms ahead of this CCD that'll fall on your left.

Also, there will be one more Kamat attached to IOCL station after Dharwad Bypass (say 8 kms after exit toll) but on the right hand side. You can opt for this only if you take the MK Hubli Khanapur route.

Also, between Alnavar Khanapur and MK Hubli Khanapur I doubt if anyone will be faster than the other. This will hardly make any difference actually.

Thanks a lot Parag for quick response. Once again you come to rescue of Bangalore- Goa travellers

Wanted to take MK Hubli as I once got lost on Alnawar route and ended up on mollem - ponda route instead of going to Khanapur- chorla .

Its easy actually. As you get near Alnavar, you'll pass the town on your left and soon after this there is a bad patch where work is in progress at a small culvert. After this the road forks into 2. Take right here for Khanapur. Again, you need to enter Khanapur town and then head for Jamboti.

You only need to remember the sequence(via points) - Alnavar Khanapur Jamboti. You'll not enter Alnavar but you'll enter Khanapur.

And remember that right turn after Alnavar where I vaguely remember a signage marked for Khanapur (37 kms if I recall).

1) How long does it take typically in the above route at sane speeds ? I plan to reach Goa by noon for lunch.

2) Pls share latest info on road conditions

Thanks a lot

Got back from Goa last night. Took Alnavar-Khanapur-Jamboti route instead of MK Hubli. Wanted to try out the route based on your suggestion. It is exactly the way you have described above.

Bangalore - Goa - took 10.5 hrs. Started at 3:30 am reached Candolim at 2 pm.

Goa- Bangalore - took 13 hrs. started at 12:30 pm reached Bangalore at 1:30 am. It was raining heavily throughout the NH4 stretch. We could not go beyond 80kmph for most parts on NH4.

Road condition is good throughout on this route. There are few minor broken patches in Alnavar-Khanapur-Jamboti section. This is the best route for people planning to stay in North Goa.

Being a long weekend, traffic in Goa was maddening especially Candolim-Calangute-Baga stretch. People planning to visit Tito's in their cars should reconsider. The road from Calangute leading to Baga is in shambles. Daily rain made matters worse.

Just back from the trip yesterday. Road from Ramnagar to Mollem was exactly as described by Parag. However, on return, I took a left turn just at the Anmod Check-post (Karnataka Excise). This was suggested by the cab driver in resort as well as cops at the checkpost. This road is SH-30, newly tarred single lane, super smooth, 0 traffic and cuts through Bheemgad Wildlife Sanctuary and lead me directly to Khanapur town. So, I was able to avoid the bad patches on NH-4A.

Not sure though SH-30 is open after dusk. Coming from Belgaum, this road is right turn at Khanapur town. Highly recommended for going towards Mollem instead of taking NH-4A all the way.

Just realised I am staying in a property at the very southern part of Goa. And this is the first time I am venturing into this part of the country. Google maps suggests a route from Hubli to Ponda and then to Southern Goa. I presume that would the one I need to take..

If its really southern part, then its better to take the Hubli-Ankola-Karwar option. Much better that way.

This route looks very lengthy as per google maps. maybe i should clarify how south. I will be staying near the Colva beach.

Colva is quite south. You should take the Ankola, Karwar route. It may be longer but it is definitely the better one and probably faster than the Ramnagar, Mollem, Ponda route.
