Re: Rajasthan Road Trip : Queries

I am heading out to Rajasthan on a bike trip between Nov 11 to Nov 18. Looking for updates in Road Conditions (emphasis on smooth roads) for the following route:
  • Indore - Ujjain - Bundi
  • Bundi - Mount Abu
  • Mount Abu - Dholavira
  • Dholavira - Udaipur
  • Udaipur - Indore

Should anyone have an update from Pune - Nasik - Indore that would be great as well.

These are the same. You have go through Abu Road to reach Udaipur. The stretches after NH27 to and from Dholavira are average to bad sections and will take time. Would say to get in and out in daylight.

Re: Rajasthan Road Trip : Queries

What is the recommended route for Udaipur to Jodhpur?

Google Maps options as per the screenshot. Surprisingly, the route with the lowest toll is the fastest! I am not too bothered about the time taken or the tolls. Looking for a route that has decent options for a quick food stop.

Re: Rajasthan Road Trip : Queries

Hi everyone,

I am planning a road trip during the new year, and this is the basic plan:

Day 1: Delhi to Bikaner
Day 3: Bikaner to Amritsar
Day 5: Amritsar to Bir
Day 9: Bir to Delhi

I need your advice for Bikaner to Amritsar section. Ideally, I would like to take the following route out of a sense of adventure and love for offbeat routes, but please advise on the following factors:
1. Since it is close to the border, would it be allowed to drive there, or are we to expect a lot of checks?
2. General condition of the roads?
3. Any good restaurants, tea/coffee shops, places to take a pee break?

I have not traveled on this very route but have done sections which are like this near Fazilka etc.

You can drive without issues, no checks/blocks like deep north east. Roads would be marked with milestones mostly, not the big signages we come to expect. So you’ll have to keep up with mental math of kms since last town, kms to next turn kind of thing.
Expect nothing like the commercial grade food courts, you’ll find dhabas and petrol stations with a toilet in the back somewhere.

Re: Rajasthan Road Trip : Queries

Rekindling this thread again.

What’s the best way out of Kumbhalgarh to Jodhpur? Google Maps seems to suggest weird routes and took us to a route into Kumbhalgarh that was great for about 80% but the last 20% was horrible. Want to avoid such a situation tomorrow.

Re: Rajasthan Road Trip : Queries

Hello fellow BHP-ians, I need some suggestion regarding a tight trip from Ahmedabad to Jaipur and back.
A colleague is getting married at his hometown near Jaipur (a small village named Phulera) and one of our foreign colleagues is interested to visit the marriage, more because he can see Rajasthan from a road trip point of view, but we are short in time. I plan to leave from Ahmedabad and reach somewhere outskirts of Jaipur on the southern outskirts so we are not far from Phulera, so I have planned as below, need some suggestions as highlighted with brackets:

1. Saturday 13th July 06am: AMD to Jaipur with brief bio breaks and lunch, expect to reach outskirts of Jaipur by evening 6:30-07:00 PM. (Need suggestion on either close to a fort or a nice hotel which might be close to any natural historic attraction, which we can visit early morning next day, and enjoy the night with some local folk music or dance)

2. Sunday 14th July morning: Wish to visit some close by fort or historical place to show the flavour of Royal history of India to my European colleague, later visit Phulera to attend some wedding function. Later in the evening return back to Jaipur, or move towards Ajmer to spend the night. (Please suggest which shall be better or any alternative)

3. Monday 15th July morning: leave from Ajmer or Jaipur towards Udaipur, reach Udaipur by evening and spend the evening at Bagore Ki Haveli and have some dinner by the Lake Pichola, rest overnight.
4. Tuesday 16th July morning: Leave from Udaipur to Ahmedabad.

Border near neemuch will give problems. It seems you are going for darshan. Nakodaji has good dharamshala in the complex itself. Roads between Ranakpur, nakoda and abu are all small State highways so it may be good or terrible hard to say. We've done all these but as separate trips ex Jaipur so our travel was always north south and we used national and state highways.

If you do end up doing nakoda to abu see if you can cover bhinmal also for 72 jinalaya and/or sundha mata.

Its a mix of leisure and darshan. Udaipur and Abu is leisure and then Nakoda + jirawala for darshan.

I will consider 72 jinalaya , thanks for the suggestion.

Re: Rajasthan Road Trip : Queries

We did Pokhran-Jaipur via Jodhpur-Bar-Beawar last December which had excellent conditions all through. We left Pokhran around 9-930 am and reached suburban Jaipur around 645 pm with about 30-60 mins lost inbetween for personal reasons.

Only complaint was negotiating Jodhpur, otherwise the highway sections are good through Jaisalmer.
  • Jaisalmer-Sam road is average
  • Road connecting Sam to NH70 is sad
  • NH70 through Longewala-Tanot is the best 2-lane highway in India. And you might do it from Barmer. Please be wary of sand over roads in Barmer to Sam section.
  • Tanot-Ramnagar-Jaisalmer is again a dream run.
